BASEBALL
Mark Swiski (Hatboro-Horsham)
will be inducted into the La Salle University Hall of Athletes. Swiski, a 1982 La Salle graduate, was a three-time all-ECC selection as an outfielder on the La Salle baseball team. He graduated with the second highest batting average (.368), which currently ranks eighth all-time. Swiski also graduated with the second highest batting average in a single season at .426, which was eighth best in the nation that season. As a senior co-captain, he helped the Explorers to a then school record 23 wins. His career on-base percentage of .510 ranks among the best in Explorer history. He was drafted in the 15th round of the 1982 Major League Baseball Draft by the Texas Rangers and played briefly in minor league baseball.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
Gwynedd Mercy sophomore Arron Goodman (Council Rock North) was named the ECAC Division III South Region Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 12. This is the second weekly honor he has picked up. Goodman also was selected the CSAC Player of the Week . Goodman leads the squad in scoring (19.1 ppg) and rebounding (10.4 rpg) and has recorded eight double-doubles so far this season.
Goodman scored a game-high 31 points and also collected 12 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the season in Gwynedd Mercy’s 75-55 win over Centenary on Wednesday. In Monday’s 92-75 win over Keystone, Goodman led the Griffins with 16 points. Julian Hyden (Bensalem) scored 14 points off the bench.

All-America junior guard Whis Grant (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 16 of his 21 points in the second half as No. 8 East Stroudsburg extended its school record start to 16-0 with a 74-63 win at Bloomsburg on Wednesday night. ESU is 17-4 when Grant tops the 20-point mark. He ranks 16th at ESU with 1,197 career points. Grant tied Juwan Justice (1998-02) for second on ESU’s career three-point list with 162. He tied Trevin Panaia (1993-97) for 19th on ESU’s career steals list with 125.

Freshman Josh Johnson (Norristown) scored a team-high 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting while grabbing seven rebounds in Kutztown’s 62-58 loss to Lock Haven on Saturday. Ryan Connolly (Souderton) added eight points and a season-high nine rebounds. In Wednesday’s 77-73 loss to Millersville, Johnson shot 7-for-8 from the free throw line and scored 13 points to go along with eight rebounds. He also added three blocks and three steals.

Senior guard Kenny Gula (Quakertown) scored 10 points in Moravian’s 97-56 loss to The Catholic University on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 67-66 win over Drew, Gula hit a baseline jumper with 2.8 seconds left to give the Greyhounds the win. Gula finished with a team-high 15 points. In Monday’s 64-49 loss to Rutgers-Camden, Gula had seven points.

Wesley Brooks (North Penn) scored 13 points in McDaniel’s 67-56 win over Franklin & Marshall. In Tuesday’s 63-57 win over Swarthmore, Brooks scored seven points, including 3-of-4 from the foul line in the final 23 seconds to seal the win. He also had six rebounds and two steals.

Junior Marcus Badger (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 10 points in Randolph-Macon’s 60-53 win over Randolph on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 103-80 win over Shenandoah, Badger scored 12 points.

Junior Sam Pygatt (Plymouth Whitemarsh) shot 5-of-7 from the field for 11 points off the bench in Shippensburg’s 82-73 loss to Mansfield.

Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown) scored 19 points and hit his 200th career three-pointer on his fourth trey of the afternoon in Bloomsburg’s 77-76 win over West Chester on Saturday. Christmas became the fourth player in program history to reach 200 three’s and is 25 away from the record of 225 set by Mike Ellzy from 1993-97.

Senior point guard Jesse Krasna (Pennsbury) scored 15 points in Ursinus College’s 67-66 loss to Johns Hopkins on Saturday. Sophomore guard Mark Wonderling (Souderton) and freshman guard John Kanas (Souderton) both added 11. In the Bears’ 87-70 loss to Washington College, Krasna scored 11 points and also had four assists.

Zach Sibel (Pennsbury) hit a trio of treys and finished with 11 points in Delaware Valley’s 84-75 loss to DeSales on Saturday.

Sophomore forward Dave Knox (Central Bucks South) had six rebounds to lead Washington College in its 76-62 loss to Muhlenberg on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 87-70 win over Ursinus, Sean Brooks (North Penn) dished out a career-high six assists.

Junior Travis Bryan (Hatboro-Horsham) came off the bench to grab a game-high 11 rebounds and block three shots in DeSales University’s 84-75 win over Delaware Valley on Saturday. In last Sunday’s 106-53 win over Medgar Evers College, junior Michael Guldin (Pennridge) contributed eight points, four assists and one steal.

Chris Davis (Norristown) scored 11 points in Alvernia’s 79-70 win over Widener on Wednesday.

Senior center Connor Poston (Hatboro-Horsham) notched 10 points and eight rebounds in Gettysburg’s 71-55 win over Swarthmore on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 69-58 loss to Haverford, Poston scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Senior Fran Rafferty (Upper Merion) posted a career-high 31 points, hitting 8-of-13 from the floor – including 4-of-7 from three-point range, in No. 4 Cabrini’s 84-62 win at Immaculata on Monday.

Sophomore Ryan Arcidiacano (Neshaminy) scored 14 points and also had three assists in Villanova’s 88-62 win over DePaul on Saturday.

Penn State Abington junior Mike Marvin (Hatboro-Horsham) was named the NEAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 12. The junior forward recorded a double-double in all three Abington games during the week while posting averages of 19 points, 11.7 rebounds and one steal per game while shooting nearly 48 percent (22-of-48) from the field. After opening the week with game highs of 24 points and 13 rebounds in an 89-75 loss to Arcadia, Marvin led the Nittany Lions to a pair of wins. He posted 14 points and a team-high 12 boards in a 72-60 win over Wells College and followed that with 19 points and a game-best 10 rebounds in a 78-72 win over Keuka College.
Marvin collected his 10th double-double of the season with a game-high 26 points and 16 rebounds in Penn State Abington’s 80-73 win over Morrisville State on Saturday.

Dalton Pepper (Pennsbury) scored 15 points in Temple’s 74-68 loss to La Salle on Saturday.  In Tuesday’s 69-58 loss to #19/23 Cincinnati, Pepper scored 21 points, which included four three-pointers.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Sophomore Stephanie Knauer (North Penn) scored 15 points in Shippensburg’s 107-65 win at Mansfield on Saturday. It was the most scored in a single game by Shippensburg since the 1990-91 season opener, and the Raiders hit the century mark for the first time since 2000. In Wednesday’s 87-86 loss to West Chester, Knauer scored a team-high 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting and added 11 rebounds and a career-high five steals.

Sophomore guard Helena Gemmell (Council Rock North) scored seven points in East Stroudsburg’s 63-51 loss to Bloomsburg on Wednesday.

Natasha Matthews (Norristown) had 15 points and 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season in Gwynedd Mercy’s 86-54 win over Keystone on Monday.

Sarah Kiely (Council Rock North) finished with a double-double in American University’s 70-61 win over Lehigh Wednesday, collecting 10 points and 11 rebounds. In American’s 72-57 win over Lafayette on Saturday, Lauren Crisler (North Penn) contributed five points, four rebounds and one blocked shot.

Senior Danielle Ciccarone (Quakertown) hit five three-pointers en route to a game-high 21 points as St. Thomas defeated Warner (Fla.) 72-66 on Wednesday night. With the win, the Bobcats improved to 6-0 in the Sun Conference.

Amie Eppolito (Pennsbury) contributed 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists in Cairn University’s 73-38 loss to Baptist Bible College on Thursday. In Tuesday’s 55-42 loss to Cedar Crest, Eppolito had 20 points, six rebounds and three assists.

Jessica Schmidt (Abington) collected her fifth double-double of the season in Penn State Abington’s 51-35 win over Morrisville State on Saturday, collecting 16 points and 13 rebounds. In Tuesday’s 55-45 loss to St. Elizabeth, Schmidt scored 17 points and pulled down nine rebounds.

Emily O’Donnell (William Tennent) contributed 13 points and seven rebounds in Albright’s 74-64 loss to No. 22 Lebanon Valley on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 63-61 win over Hood, O’Donnell finished with a double-double, contributing 17 points and 13 rebounds. In Monday’s 87-31 win over Penn State-Berks, O’Donnell had 12 points.

Senior Kelsey Ryan (Neshaminy) had 11 points in Lock Haven’s 66-51 win over Kutztown on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 56-43 win over Mansfield, Ryan had seven points and six rebounds.

Senior Brittany Sandone (Souderton) scored 12 points in Cabrini’s 64-55 loss at Keystone College on Sunday. The loss is Cabrini’s first in the Colonial States Athletic Conference in nearly two years. In Wednesday’s 52-40 win over Rosemont, Sandone led the Cavaliers with 14 points.

Colleen Hinde (Wissahickon) scored a team-high 15 points in Neumann University’s 84-33 win over Baptist Bible College on Saturday. In last Monday’s 81-48 win over Centenary College, Hinde scored 11 points.

Tyra Roberts (Bensalem) contributed a double-double in Alvernia’s 91-71 win over Widener on Wednesday, contributing 22 points and 11 rebounds.

Freshman Curtrena Goff (Upper Dublin) broke the Rosemont record for assists in a game, dishing out 15 assists in Rosemont’s 77-43 win over Cedar Crest on Saturday. The previous record for assists was 10 and was set on Feb. 1, 1999.

FOOTBALL
Justin Pugh (Council Rock South),
the New York Giants’ first round draft choice last year, was named to the Pro Football Writers Association 2013 All-Rookie Team. Pugh, the 19th overall selection in the draft, started all 16 games at right tackle. He was the first Giants’ rookie to start an entire 16-game season since defensive tackle Barry Cofield in 2006. He was the first offensive lineman to do it since David Diehl in 2003, and he was the first Giants’ first round draft choice to do so since 
Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor in 1981.

Lebanon Valley senior left guard Brendan Kozub (Council Rock North) was named to the all-East first team by D3football.com. Kozub was a first team all-MAC selection and will move onto the ballot for all-America consideration. A senior captain, Kozub led an offensive line that was one of the MAC’s best. He started all 11 games at left guard and helped LVC rank third in the MAC with 207.5 yards rushing per game while allowing just 15 sacks in pass protection during the regular season. Kozub did not allow a sack individually as the o-line’s top pass protector. The CR North alum also was named to the ECAC South All-Star second team. Lebanon Valley was the Middle Atlantic Conference champion.

MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Towson University senior diver Alex Cohen (Abington) was named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Men’s Diver of the Week for the week ending Jan. 11. Cohen earned the award after a record-breaking performance to lead the Tigers to a victory over George Mason. Cohen broke his own Towson school record in the one-meter dive by scoring 308.85 points. He also shattered his own school record in the three-meter event with a 339.83 score. The scores enabled Cohen to win both events. It was his fifth weekly honor of the season.

Freshman Ian Flynn (Upper Dublin) was part of the winning 200 medley relay that posted a time of 1:35.49 in Rider’s 180-107 win over Saint Peter’s University on Saturday.

Junior Ben Mancini (Springfield) was a multi-event winner in Washington & Jefferson’s 169-119 win over Penn State-Behrend on Saturday. The Springfield alum swam to a first place finish in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 18:27.23. He also finished first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:16.58. Sophomore Kevin Dunigan (North Penn) collected wins in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, touching in at 1:04.88 and 2:22.96, respectively.

Dylan Cooper (William Tennent) finished second in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 17:58 in Ursinus College’s 125-56 win over Cabrini on Saturday. In Friday’s 109-90 win over York (Pa.), Cooper finished second in the 200 free with a time of 1:51.51. Spencer Collopy (North Penn) was part of the third place 400 medley relay team that posted a time of 3:42.99.

James Abel (Neshaminy) will be inducted into the La Salle University Hall of Athletes. Abel, a 1966 graduate of La Salle, was a two-time All-American for the Explorers in the 500 and 1650 freestyle. He helped the Explorers finish third at the NCAA Championships in 1964 and fifth in 1965 and 1966. He won the 1966 Middle Atlantic Conference Championship in the 500 freestyle and set school records in the 200, 500 and 1650 freestyle.

CJ Gimpel (Central Bucks South) notched the top scores on the 1-meter board (255.75) and 3-meter board (260.95) in La Salle’s 202-97 win over Fordham on Sunday. Dave Derr (Upper Dublin) was part of the winning 200 medley relay that posted a time of 1:35.73.

TJ Schenkel (Council Rock South) won the one-meter diving competition with a score of 264.75 in Penn State’s 191-96 win over Villanova on Friday.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Emily Houser (Upper Dublin)
finished second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.44 in Dickinson’s 110-95 win over McDaniel on Saturday. She added a third place showing in the 50 free with a time of 55.35.

Freshman Jess Wimmer (Souderton) posted wins in the 200 breaststroke (2:42.08) and the 400 IM in Lycoming’s 150-110 win over Arcadia on Saturday.

Taylor Mateja (Upper Merion) placed fourth in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:21.56 in Franklin & Marshall’s 147-115 win over Susquehanna on Saturday.

Caroline Rudkin (Upper Dublin) was part of a relay team that won the 300 yard backstroke at IUP’s dual meet against Millersville and West Chester last Sunday in the Florida South Relays. IUP defeated Millersville 136-54 and went on to defeat West Chester, which was ranked third in the Endless Pools/CollegeSwimming.com Top 25, 91-79.

Senior Maggie Dillione (Council Rock North) won three events to lead the Case Western Reserve University’s 153.5-146.5 win over Allegheny College on Saturday. Dillione was part of the 200 medley relay that won with a time of 1:55.13. She also finished first in the 200 free (1:59.68) and the 100 butterfly (58.59).

Junior Kate Dillione (Council Rock North) finished first with a time of 1:52.21 in the 200 freestyle in Brown’s 172-126 loss to Penn on Saturday. She also was part of the winning 400 free relay (3:31.64)

Jan Ikeda (North Penn) swam a career-best in the 50m free to win in 28.62, just three-tenths off the school record, and she also won the 100m butterfly in 1:06.60 in Lebanon Valley’s 145-19 win over FDU-Florham on Saturday.

Junior Chelsea Kozior (Council Rock South) finished first in the 200 free with a time of 2:00.34 in Ursinus College’s 118-67 win over York (Pa.) on Saturday. Freshman Marisa Ferrari (Central Bucks East) was third at 26.78.

Sophomore Sarah Richards (Central Bucks East) won a pair of individual events in The College of New Jersey’s 170-109 win over William Paterson University on Saturday. She claimed first in the 100 backstroke (1:07.06) and the 500 free (5:42.56).

Abby Miller (Neshaminy) finished third in the 50 freestyle in Lock Haven’s 152-106 loss to Kutztown on Saturday.

Senior Amanda Thomas (William Tennent) was part of the first place 4x100 relay team in Millersville’s 107-98 win over East Stroudsburg on Saturday. Thomas also won the 200 IM with a time of 2:18.27.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Josh Mindlin (Council Rock North)
was part of the 4x200m relay team that broke the previous University of Pittsburgh record at the Penn State Relays last Saturday. The relay team broke the previous record of 1:27.00, which has stood since 1995 with a time of 1:24.91.Mindlin also took fifth in the 200m dash.
WRESTLING
Joe Stolfi (Souderton)
posted pins in a pair of matches to propel Bucknell to two comeback victories on Saturday against Brown (23-19) and Clarion (24-18). Stolfi recorded his 15th pin of the season in his heavyweight match against Brown in 2:34, propelling the Bison to the six-point victory. He also recorded a pin in 4:01 in his match against Clarion.

Greg Kabakjian (Souderton) was 1-2 in No. 8 Messiah College’s quad-match with No. 23 Heidelberg (25-12), No. 18 Waynesburg (27-13) and Penn State DuBois (48-3) on Saturday. The Souderton grad pinned his opponent in 3:45 in Messiah’s win over Penn State Dubois.

Richard Jasinski (Pennridge) earned a tech fall (21-4) in five minutes time in Ursinus College’s 53-0 win over West Chester on Tuesday night.

Senior James Vollrath (Council Rock South) won by a pin at the 4:01 mark at 157 in No. 1 Penn State’s 39-8 win over No. 14 Northwestern in front of a sold-out Rec Hall on Sunday. In Penn State’s 36-6 win over No. 19 Indiana on Friday, Vollrath was strong against No. 5 Taylor Walsh of Indiana but dropped a 5-4 decision in one of the most anticipated match-ups at 157.

Matt Martoccio (Council Rock South) earned a 6-5 decision at 157 in No. 7 Kutztown’s 18-17 come-from-behind win over Gannon on Saturday afternoon.

Matt Rappo (Council Rock South) won his 20th match of the year at 141 pounds in Bloomsburg’s 20-16 loss to Rider on Friday night, winning by a fall in just 1:28 to tie the score 6-6.
