MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Ursinus junior Sam Stortz (Upper Dublin) finished 19th overall in the College White Race at the Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University on Friday, posting a time of 26:56 in the 8K race. Ursinus finished 15th overall.

Senior Owen Ward (Harry S. Truman) finished ninth with a time of 31:06.39 in Chestnut Hill’s seventh place finish at the Belmont Classic on Saturday.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Sophomore Taylor Goldsworthy (Central Bucks South) placed second among Temple runners with a time of 24:29 at the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University on Friday. Temple finished 32nd overall, marking the highest the women’s cross country squad has ever placed in the 38 years of the annual race.  Senior Karrie Finn (Council Rock North) crossed the finish line in 212th place with a time of 24:51. Chelsea Carleton (Central Bucks South) finished with a time of 26:45 and teammate Victoria Gocht (Upper Dublin) posted a time of 26:55.

Lauren Bond (North Penn) finished 146th with a time of 24:16 at the Paul Short Invitational on Friday. Her Bloomsburg squad finished 14th overall.

Elizabethtown freshman Ashley Underkofler (Central Bucks South) and sophomore Abby Mitchell (Council Rock North) finished with times of 25:40 and 25:53 respectively in Friday’s Paul Short Run. The Blue Jays finished 18th overall.

FIELD HOCKEY
Senior Julie Rosenkaimer (North Penn) scored the game-winning goal in Kutztown’s 2-1 win over Mansfield on Saturday.

Junior Amanda Fleischut (Central Bucks West) scored a goal in Drexel’s 4-1 win over Towson on Friday.

Junior Becca Chylack (Souderton) scored the game winner with 13 minutes to play in La Salle’s 2-1 win over Sacred Heart on Sunday. Chylack’s 21 career goals place her 10th on La Salle’s all-time list. She also is tied for seventh on the all-time points list with 52. On Saturday, Chylack scored La Salle’s only goal in the Explorers 4-1 loss to Bryant.

Sophomore Lauren Purvis (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed an assist on the game-winning goal in Penn State’s 4-3 overtime win over No. 16 Northwestern on Saturday.

Maria Karidas (Council Rock South) scored a pair of goals in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 5-1 win over Cabrini on Saturday. Junior Erin Gorenflo (Plymouth Whitemarsh) also contributed a goal.

Karidas received the CSAC Field Hockey Player of the Week Award, helping the Griffins remain the last unbeaten team in the conference at 3-0 and 7-3 overall. The sophomore scored two goals and added an assist in Gwynedd-Mercy's 5-1 win over Cabrini on Saturday in a rematch of last season's title game. She scored in the game's first minute to give Gwynedd a 1-0 lead and then capped the scoring with the final goal of the day. Karidas leads the team in goals (9) and assists (5).

Caitlin Vasey (Central Bucks East) contributed three assists in Lebanon Valley’s 5-3 win over Eastern Mennonite on Saturday. Her three assists brought her to 42 for her career, putting her three behind former teammate Shelly Lobach for the all-time LVC lead.  In Thursday’s 4-1 win over Gettysburg, Vasey contributed a goal.

Goalkeeper Jill Lukens (Central Bucks East) recorded five saves in seventh-ranked Ursinus College’s 3-1 win over McDaniel on Saturday. 

Brittany Varacallo (Central Bucks South) split time in goal and combined with teammate Sarah Lemieux to make eight saves in No. 5 IUP’s 5-1 loss to No. 1 Bloomsburg on Saturday. In Friday’s  3-2 loss to No. 9 Millersville on Friday, Varacallo recorded three saves in the first 35 minutes. Varacallo turned away a pair of shots in 35 minutes of action in IUP’s 3-1 win over Seton Hill on Tuesday.

Junior Marlaine Schneider (Neshaminy) scored on a rebound to give Rider a 1-0 lead with four minutes remaining in the first half of Wednesday’s game against Villanova. The goal was the sixth of the season for Schneider and the 17th of her career. The Broncs went on to earn a 3-0 win. Villanova senior goalie Megan Goelz (Pennsbury) recorded a season-high 18 saves on 21 shots on goal. She recorded nine of her saves in the first half.

Goelz was named to the Big East Weekly Honor Roll last Monday after a week that saw the Wildcats earn a pair of 2-1 wins over Penn and Rutgers. For Goelz, it was the first time she was named to the Big East Weekly Honor Roll this season but the eighth time in her career. She registered four saves in the win at Penn and six in the conference win against Rutgers.

FOOTBALL
Temple junior placekicker/punter Brandon McManus (North Penn) received Honorable Mention accolades from the College Football Performance Awards. McManus, who took over the Owls’ punting duties this fall, punted twice for 118 yards (59.0) in Temple’s 36-13 loss to Toledo on Saturday. He also made two field goals (30 and 37 yards), moving him up to No. 2 in career field goals made (36). McManus has made 18 consecutive extra points.

Senior linebacker Greg Martell (Neshaminy) had an interception in Ursinus College’s 42-7 win over Moravian on Saturday. Junior punter Derek Giannetti (Upper Dublin) averaged 36.4 yards on five punts.

Freshman Craig Needhammer (North Penn) scored from one yard out in Lycoming’s 35-13 win over previously unbeaten Albright College on Saturday. Needhammer finished the day with 53 yards on 14 carries.

Quarterback Kevin Morton (Abington) threw for 124 yards on 12-for-30 passing in Kutztown’s 29-7 loss to Shippensburg. Saturday’s performance snapped a 21-game streak of throwing at least one touchdown pass. He tied the record last week with his four TD outing against Cheyney. Josh Mastromatto (Upper Dublin) had 27 receiving yards and a total of 155 all-purpose yards, which included 111 yards coming on kickoffs. Alex DiNolfi (Norristown) had a career-high 13 tackles. For Shippensburg, sophomore Jake Metz (Souderton) had four tackles and also contributed one of five Red Raider sacks. Sophomore Mike Goode (Norristown) had a diving interception off Morton.

Pat Cantrell (Pennsbury) recorded 1.5 sacks in Millersville’s 10-7 win over Cheney on Saturday.

Jack Abercrombie (Hatboro-Horsham) received his first career start at center last week against Clarion University only four games into his true freshman season at California University of Pa. He has appeared in three of the five games for Cal, which is ranked 16th in the latest Division II rankings and boasts a record of 4-1 overall.

Ryan Dickerson (Souderton) had eight catches for 104 yards, which included a 15-yard reception for a key first down on third-and-eight to seal Bloomsburg’s 32-20 win over East Stroudsburg on Saturday afternoon. For East Stroudsburg, senior linebacker Mike Bergey (Souderton) had 11 tackles.

Shawn Leo (Souderton) kicked field goals of 39, 47 and 48 yards to set a school record for field goals made in a single season at 13, but West Chester still came out on the short end of a 34-23 score in Saturday’s game against C.W. Post.  Leo is now 13 of 15 on the year in field goals made. The Golden Rams were without starting running back Jackson Fagan (Pennsbury) and managed just 107 yards on the ground.

GOLF
Eric Slawter (Upper Merion)
shot a 155 to tie for 16th individually in the 2011 Howard ‘Bud’ Elwell Invitational.  Slawter’s West Chester squad captured the title in the 12-team invitational.

La Salle sophomore Mike Johnson (Hatboro-Horsham) tied for 15th with a 72-79 =151 (+7) in the ECAC Championship. The Explorers finished sixth. 

MEN’S SOCCER
Fran Miller (Central Bucks East) scored the go-ahead goal in Bloomsburg’s 3-1 win over Lock Haven on Saturday. Teammate Anthony Manero (Council Rock North) scored an insurance goal at the 71:08 mark.  On Friday, Miller picked up an assist on a goal that turned out to be the game winner in Bloomsburg’s 1-0 win over Slippery Rock. Last Sunday, Manero contributed a pair of assists and sophomore Brendan Gorman (North Penn) scored a goal in Bloomsburg’s 4-3 loss to West Virginia Wesleyan.

Junior Drew Hilinski (Pennridge) scored a goal in Widener’s 5-1 win over Berkeley College on Tuesday.

Freshman Ryan Roedel (Neshaminy) was part of a defensive unit that did not allow a goal in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 1-0 win over Philadelphia Biblical on Wednesday.

Junior Andrew Foran (Council Rock North) made his third straight start in goal for Shippensburg, recording five saves and posting his second career shutout in Shippensburg’s 2-0 win over Gannon on Saturday. On Wednesday, Foran recorded five saves in Shippensburg’s 2-0 loss to No. 4 Mercyhurst.

Freshman Sean Murphy (North Penn) earned his first career victory with two saves in goal in East Stroudsburg’s 2-1 win over Slippery Rock on Saturday.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
Jamie Veniver (Council Rock South)
scored a goal in Bloomsburg’s 2-0 win over Lock Haven on Saturday.

Brianna Hires (Neshaminy) scored her team’s first goal shortly in West Chester’s 3-0 win over Mansfield on Saturday. It was Hires’ third goal in the last three games. Hires also assisted on a goal by teammate Jen Hutchinson (Neshaminy).

IUP’s Melissa Kornock (North Penn) was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Women’s Soccer Athlete of the Week last week. Kornock scored five goals and also recorded three assists for a total of 13 points to help lead IUP to a 3-0 week with wins over East Stroudsburg, West Virginia Wesleyan and Gannon. She tallied at least two points in each game, including a pair of game-winning goals. In IUP’s 5-1 win over East Stroudsburg, Kornock contributed two goals and two assists. She followed that by scoring a goal in IUP’s 4-1 win over West Virginia Wesleyan and capped the week by contributing two goals and an assist in Saturday’s 4-1 win over Gannon.

Kornock and teammate Anna-Kate Depaolo (Pennridge) both contributed assists in IUP’s 4-3 double overtime loss to Edinboro on Wednesday. IUP is ranked 15th in the latest NCAA Division II National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll. IUP jumped from fourth to second in the Atlantic Regional rankings.

MEN’S TENNIS
The College of New Jersey senior Dan Lee (Abington) was part of a doubles team that picked up a pair of wins on Saturday, advancing to the quarterfinals of the 2011 USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championship. On Sunday, Lee and his partner TJ Riley fell to the third-seeded team from Stevens Institute of Technology by an 8-4 score.

Andres Prince (Wissahickon) and teammate Evan Carney were Bloomsburg’s only winners in doubles on Saturday in the final day of the BU Fall Classic. They won their match 8-5 in the ‘A’ flight.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Gwynedd-Mercy sophomore Rachel Fein (Wissahickon) was named the CSAC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 2. She won the #1 singles championship at the 2011 Goucher Open on Saturday for the second year in a row, going a perfect 3-0 in her three matches. After opening the tourney with wins over Goucher (6-0, 6-0) and Richard Stockton (6-0, 6-2), she won the title with a 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 win in the championship round against Penn State-Behrend. On the season, Fein is 12-1 and 8-0 in dual match play.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Sophomore Liz DiValerio (Upper Merion) notched the winning kill in the second set of Kutztown’s 3-0 win over East Stroudsburg on Saturday (25-12, 25-23, 25-20). She finished the match with six kills. In Friday’s 3-0 loss to Lock Haven, DiValerio contributed five kills.

Senior Aileen Reilly (Pennsbury) contributed 11 kills and eight digs in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 3-0 loss to Marywood on Thursday. In Tuesday’s 3-0 loss to Neumann, Reilly recorded six kills and a team-high 14 digs.

Senior right side Katherine Tohanczyn (North Penn) contributed 11 kills in Chestnut Hill’s 3-1 loss to Holy Family on Thursday.

Sarah Godfrey (William Tennent) had a team-high nine kills and a .529 attack percentage for Lebanon Valley in Saturday’s Middle Atlantic Conferences Crossover. Lebanon Valley earned a 3-0 win over FDU-Florham but fell to Eastern 3-0. On Wednesday, Godfrey contributed nine kills and two blocks in Lebanon Valley’s 3-1 loss to Messiah.

Freshman Julie Harvey (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed a team-high 13 kills to go along with four blocks in Franklin & Marshall’s 3-0 win over Ithaca College on Friday. It was the fifth straight win for the Diplomats. In Wednesday’s 3-2 thriller over Swarthmore, Harvey recorded a team-high 27 kills and a .490 hitting percentage. She also had four blocks. On Tuesday, Harvey had nine kills and six blocks in F&M’s 3-1 win over Bryn Mawr.

Lindsay Palm (Council Rock North) had 16 kills in Elizabethtown’s 3-2 loss to Lycoming on Wednesday.
