MEN’S BASKETBALL
Lavoy Allen (Pensbury) led Temple with 12 points and 14 rebounds in a 46-45 loss to Georgetown on Nov. 17.
Senior guard Robby Pines (Souderton) had eight points and seven assists in East Stroudsburg’s 109-61 win over Penn State-Allegheny on the second day of the Wolf’s Bus Line Classic on Saturday at Shippensburg University. ESU, which improved to 3-0, has won its first three games by margins of 49, 49 and 48 points. On Friday, Pines ran the offense with eight points, four rebounds, six assists and three steals in 25 minutes of action in ESU’s 101-52 win over Mercy.
Senior Brian Oleksiak (Abington) played 14 minutes and contributed three points, four rebounds, four assists and a block in Shipensburg’s 96-49 win over Penn State-Greater Allegheny in the Wolf’s Bus Lines Classic on Friday. On Saturday, Oleksiak had a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with six points, three assists, three steals and two blocks in Shippensburg’s 74-49 win over Mercy. The Red Raiders are 3-0.
Junior Chris McDevitt (Central Bucks West) scored 12 of his 15 points in the first half in Widener’s 112-58 romp over Saint Joseph’s Brooklyn in the Oki Data Americas Tip-Off on Friday. In Saturday’s championship game, McDevitt pulled down a huge rebound and drilled one-of-two from the foul line with five seconds remaining in Widener’s 65-60 win over Rowan. He finished the game with 12 points.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Sophomore Casey Pritz (Abington) scored 10 points in Widener’s 69-60 win over St. Mary’s (Md.) on Sunday. On Saturday, Pritz had eight points and 10 rebounds, including four on the offensive board, in just 18 minutes of action in a 59-54 loss to Roanoke.
Redshirt sophomore Brittany McClain (Harry S. Truman) will be seeing her first collegiate action when she joins the East Stroudsburg lineup in the middle of the season this year.
Antonia Gale (Cheltenham) had a career-high nine rebounds to go along with nine points in LaSalle’s 76-55 loss at Oral Roberts University on Friday. Her sister, Ashley Gale (Cheltenham), led the Explorers with 13 points and a career-high five steals. On Saturday, Antonia Gale scored 10 of LaSalle’s last 14 points from the foul line in a 62-39 loss to Tulsa. She also had a career-high four steals.
Jaime Donovan (Central Bucks East) scored seven points in Lock Haven’s 72-49 loss to West Chester in the Millersville University Tip-Off Tournament on Friday. Heather McHugh (Norristown) added six points as she was 2-for-4 from three-point range.
Sophomore guard Ali Rosati (Central Bucks East) pulled down 11 rebounds and senior Carolyn Konstanzer (Pennridge) posted 11 points and eight rebounds off the bench in Ursinus College’s 62-54 win over Rowan in the first round of the Albright College Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Lock Haven senior Brandon Pomerantz (Council Rock North) was 104th overall with a time of 33:52.7 in the 2009 NCAA Division II Men’s Cross Country National Championships on Saturday.
Shippensburg junior Sean Stetler (Central Bucks South) finished 133rd with a time of 35:08 in the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships held at the University of Southern Indiana on Sunday. Shippensburg finished 13th overall.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Andrea Kellock (North Penn) finished second for Bloomsburg at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships on Saturday with a time of 22:12, good enough for 48th place overall. The Huskies finished 17th out of 24 teams. Kellock closed out her senior season by earning All-PSAC and All-Region honors.
FIELD HOCKEY
The SOL had representatives on all four teams in the NCAA Division I Final Four this weekend at Wake Forest University. Sophomore Taryn Gjurich saw action in North Carolina’s dramatic 3-2 win over previously undefeated Maryland in Sunday’s title game. In Saturday’s 3-2 semifinal win over Virginia, the sophomore forward scored her first goal of the season for the Tar Heels, breaking a 1-1 tie in the second half. Taylor Swezey (Hatboro-Horsham) was a starting midfielder for Virginia.
Junior Katie O’Donnell (Wissahickon), the ACC Offensive Player of the Year and the Mid Atlantic Region’s Player of the Year, had a record-breaking day in Maryland’s 7-5 win over No. 4 Princeton in Saturday’s semifinal. The gifted forward scored three goals and also contributed three assists. Her first assist came 13 minutes into the game and broke the ACC and Maryland career assist records with 72. That assist also gave O’Donnell her 200th career point. She is the 24th player in NCAA history to break 200 points. Her nine-point performance in the game is the most by any player in an NCAA semifinal or final game. Sophomore defender Rachel Neufeld (Central Bucks East) saw action for Princeton.
Senior Brittany Godshall (Souderton) was a starting defensive back for a Messiah squad that fell to Salisbury 1-0 in Sunday’s NCAA Division III championship game. It was the seventh trip to the title game for Messiah, which has earned the silver trophy in all seven. The loss was the first of the season for Messiah (22-1) and the first time it has been shut out since the 2007 season when Salisbury defeated Messiah 3-0. In Saturday’s semifinal, Messiah earned a dramatic 4-3 win over Ursinus to earn a spot in Sunday’s title game.
Susquehanna freshman midfielder Ally Bradley (Central Bucks South) earned a spot on the 2009 Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III All-South Atlantic Region team. Bradley, the 2009 Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year and an all-Landmark first teamer, received second team all-region honors after tallying seven goals and a team-high seven assists for 21 points. Three of her goals were game-winners, including two in overtime. Her first overtime winner came in Susquehanna’s 2-1 upset of nationally ranked No. 20 William Patterson on Sept. 12. The other resulted in a 2-1 win at Moravian College that clinched SU a spot in the Landmark championships. Bradley converted Susquehanna’s lone penalty stroke this year as well.
LaSalle freshman Rebecca Chylack (Souderton) has been named to the Longstreth/NFHCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region second team. Chylack led the Explorers in goals (11), shots (64), game-winning goals (three) and defensive saves (three). She also tied teammate Beth Carey for the team lead in points (25). The freshman was recently named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year and also earned a place on the Atlantic 10 first team. She led all A-10 freshmen in points, goals and shots and set a program record for points and goals by a freshman.
FOOTBALL
Freshman Brandon McManus (North Penn) had field goals of 24 and 28 yards in Temple’s 47-13 romp over Kent State on Saturday. He was a perfect 8-for-8 in extra points in Temple’s 56-17 rout of Akron on Nov. 14.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
East Stroudsburg sophomore Devon Miniscalco (Council Rock South) was named to the 2009 Daktronics NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Women’s Soccer first team. She was ESU’s top scorer with 12 goals and three assists while starting all 20 games in the midfield for the Warriors, who finished with an 11-7-2 record and played in the PSAC Tournament for the third straight season. Miniscalco scored in 10 of ESU’s 20 games and never went more than three games without finding the net for the PSAC’s leading offense. She scored the game-winning goal one minute into overtime at Bloomsburg to give the Warriors a 2-1 win and secure their spot in the PSAC Tournament. She was a starter at back for all 22 games of her freshman season when ESU made the PSAC semifinals and earned its first win in the NCAA playoffs in school history. She was one of five Warriors named to the All-PSAC East team and was named second team in the midfield.
MEN’S SWIMMING
Rochester freshman Adam Bossert (Wissahickon) finished first in three events while helping the Yellowjackets earn their first win of the season, a 152-146 win over Union. Bossert touched the wall in the 100 free with a time of 49.47. He also won the 50 freestyle and capped the day by swimming the final leg of Rochester’s 400 free relay team. Bossert swam his leg in 48.54, the fastest time in the field. With the win, the Yellowjackets earned 11 points in the final event of the day, propelling them to a narrow six-point win.
Shippensburg junior Tim Smullen (Upper Dublin) finished eighth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.36 in the Patriot Invitational on Sunday. Smullen finished sixth in the 50 free with a time of 21.48. Senior Nate Ryan (Hatboro-Horsham) placed 11th in the ‘B’ group final for the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.25. Ryan was 13th in the 100 free with a time of 21.64. Smullen and Ryan were both part of the 400 free relay that finished sixth with a time of 3:09.28 as well as the 200 free relay that finished fifth with a time of 1:25.92. Both also were part of the 200 medley relay that finished sixth with a time of 1:35.67, and Smullen competed on the 400 medley relay that finished seventh with a time of 3:30.33. Rich Deley (Pennsbury) finished 18th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 52.53. He was a member of the 800 free relay that finished 10th with a time of 7:10.15.
Jeremy Frey (Central Bucks East) was a two-time winner for Bloomsburg in the Huskies’ 152-105 loss to Clarion on Saturday. Frey took first in the 200 back with a time of 2:00.51, and his winning time in the 200 IM was 1:59.24. In the 200 butterfly, Ben Safran (Central Bucks West) finished first with a time of 2:01.55. Tim Dorsch (Souderton) finished second in the 100 and 200 breast. In the 100, he posted a time of 1:03.72 while in the 200 he had a time of 2:23.37.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Vermont senior Molly MacMillan (Central Bucks West) was featured in the America East ‘Best of U’ series. One of the top swimmers in the America East, MacMillan helped transform the Catamounts into one of the strongest programs in the league since arriving on the campus in 2006. A two-time America East champion in the 1,650 freestyle, MacMillan has helped Vermont improve its finish in the final league standings in each of the last three years. MacMillan has a double major in Environmental Studies and Spanish with a minor in Political Science. She spent the summer prior to her junior year studying abroad at the University of Granada in Spain. The America East Rookie of the Year as a freshman, MacMillan also was a member of the first place 800 freestyle relay team that broke the conference, UVM and BU pool record at conferences last season. Kasey Campbell (Neshaminy) was part of Lock Haven’s winning 800 free relay team that finished with a time of 8:08.57 at the John A. Pidgeion Memorial Meet at Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Friday.
Julia DeVincent (Upper Dublin) was second in the 100 free with a time of 57.89 in Bloomsburg’s 162-121 loss to Clarion on Saturday.
Freshman Megan Lafferty (Upper Dublin) was part of Maryland’s winning 400 free relay and 200 free relay in this weekend’s Terrapin Cup competition. Lafferty also was in the top eight in the 100 free (51.48) as the Terps went on to capture the title in the 10-team competition, finishing with a total of 1,072 points.
Senior Heather Van O’Linda (Norristown) was a member of East Stroudsburg’s third place 200 free relay team which finished with a time of 1:44.65 in the Warriors’ third place finish at the Kutztown Invitational on Saturday. Van O’Linda finished seventh in the 50 free (26.60), 12th in the 100 breast (1:16.90), and 11th in the 100 free (59.28). Amy Rowland (Upper Moreland) finished eighth in the 200 back (2:25.61) and ninth in the 200 free (2:07.89). Sam Hoch (Norristown) finished 10th in the 1650 free.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Junior outside hitter Alyson Stark (Council Rock South) was named to the PSAC East second team for the second straight season after leading East Stroudsburg in kills and aces during the 2009 season. Stark had 174 kills and 27 aces and was the Warriors’ leading hitter in kills per set for the third straight year. She averaged 2.8 kills/set, had a .169 hitting percentage and also posted 132 digs and 24 blocks. Stark missed nearly five weeks of the season due to injury, going down Sept. 26 and returning Oct. 30. She had a season-high 18 kills in her first match back on the court, nearly leading ESU to an upset of Shippensburg. She reached double figures in kills in nine of her 20 matches this season. The junior had three double-doubles, including 26 kills and 30 digs over two matches at Shepherd. She was the first PSAC East Player of the Week this fall. She also recorded 13 kills, 15 digs and a career-high eight aces vs. St. Rose. Stark averaged 2.6 kills per set as a sophomore and recorded 307 kills, 33 aces, 158 digs and 58 blocks on her way to the first all-conference honor of her career. She had 225 kills (2.9 per set) as a freshman. Stark will enter her senior year with 706 career kills, 134 blocks and 76 aces and is approaching ESU’s top 10 in all three categories. She also carries a 3.85 GPA in chemistry and has been nominated for Academic All-District honors in each of the last two years.
Christina Laury (Hatboro-Horsham) led Lock Haven’s defense with 10 digs in the Lady Eagles’ 3-0 win over Edinboro in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Championships on Friday. In Saturday’s championship final, Laury had 11 digs, but Lock Haven was downed by California (Pa.) 3-1.
WRESTLING
East Stroudsburg freshman Devon Passman (Central Bucks East) advanced to the quarterfinals of the 43rd Annual ESU Open on Saturday. Passman had a pair of victories at 174 in his first collegiate action after spending the fall as a redshirt defensive back on the football team. He defeated John Makastchian (Nassau) 3-0 and had a 14-2 major decision of Dan Leconey (Gloucester) before suffering a first period pin by Austin Meys (Lehigh). Redshirt junior David Luthy (Plymouth Whitemarsh) won two matches for the Warriors at 125 and earned a pin of Justin Rivera (Gannon) in 2:58 in his first consolation bout.
