MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Widener freshman Jason Caporale (Neshaminy) finished 58th at Friday’s Haverford Invitational with a time of 22:22.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Kristina Koutsouros (Cheltenham)
placed 10th overall with a time of 21:47.8 as West Chester’s cross country squad earned a ninth place finish at the 2011 PSAC Women’s Cross Country Championships on Saturday. It was the fastest time on the Lock Haven course by a Golden Ram runner in the past eight years. Koutsouros and teammate Kathleen Casey became just the second and third West Chester runner to break the 22-minute mark at the championships since the PSAC went to a 6K race in 1998. Koutsouros was also under 22 minutes at Lehigh earlier this year. That race on Sept. 2 was the last time she ran for West Chester due to injury. Teammate Kim McManus (Plymouth Whitemarsh) placed 71st overall with a time of 23:32.  West Chester finished ninth. A week earlier, McManus placed 26th with a time of 25:40.64 at the Delaware Invitational. The Golden Rams placed four runners in the top 34 to claim the Division II & III race.

Elizabethtown’s Ashley Underkoffler (Central Bucks South) finished fourth with a time of 17:33.79 in Saturday’s Battle for the Buggy at the Lancaster County Central Park. Teammate Abby Mitchell (Council Rock North) finished eighth with a time of 18:12.74.

Kutztown’s Carolyn Fergus (North Penn) finished 65th overall with a time of 23:21.40 at Saturday’s PSAC Championships at Lock Haven University. Teammate Jill Kostishion (Pennridge) achieved a personal best time of 25:08.30. Kutztown finished 11th overall as a team.

Millersville’s Michelle Blum (Central Bucks East) placed 69th and teammate Megan Meyer (Central Bucks South) place 85th at Saturday’s PSAC Championship. The Marauders finished 10th.

FIELD HOCKEY
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute sophomore Kierstan Ryan (Harry S Truman) scored a goal in RPI’s 3-1 win over New England College last Sunday. She has three goals and three assists in 11 games, good for third on the team. The Truman alum has 24 shots, including 15 on goal.  As a freshman, Ryan played in 11 games, including six as a starter. She was 10th in the Liberty League in shots on goal percentage, connecting for two goals on eight shots.

Freshman Christina Maida (Central Bucks East) had five saves in Princeton’s 4-1 win over Harvard on Saturday. Teammate Rachel Neufeld (Central Bucks East) scored a goal.

Freshman Amanda Krause (Council Rock North) combined with a teammate for a shutout in TCNJ’s 5-0 win over Cabrini on Thursday.

Freshman Colleen Kempf (Central Bucks South) scored the first two goals of her collegiate career to lead La Salle to a 2-1 win over St. Joseph’s on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Olivia Shoemaker (Souderton) contributed an assist on the game’s first goal. Senior Katelyn Haney (Souderton) was one of three seniors recognized in a pre-game ceremony.

Junior Caitlin Vasey (Central Bucks East) contributed a pair of assists in No. 19 Lebanon Valley’s 8-2 win over Widener on Saturday. Her second assist tied the school career mark of 45 assists. She also scored a goal.

Junior Erin Gorenflo (Plymouth Whitemarsh) contributed two assists, both on the penalty corner tallies, in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 3-2 win over Keystone.

Taryn Gjurich (North Penn) was one of four seniors honored prior to No. 2 North Carolina’s 4-3 double overtime win over No. 7 Michigan on Sunday. “Taryn Gjurich had some big-time plays in overtime for us,” UNC coach Karen Shelton said. “This was a nice tribute to our seniors, the four that played and had such a huge impact in today’s game.”

Kelsey Grant (Council Rock South) found the back of the net in Elizabethtown’s 2-1 win over Swarthmore on Saturday. It was Grant’s first goal of her collegiate career in just her eighth game played.

Julie Rosenkaimer (North Penn) was one of three Kutztown seniors honored before Wednesday night’s game against undefeated Bloomsburg. Kutztown, which entered Wednesday’s game ranked eighth, fell to the Huskies 2-1. Rosenkaimer started her first game of the season against the Huskies. She has two goals this season and 10 in her career.

Gwynedd-Mercy sophomore Maria Karidas (Council Rock South) was selected to the Colonial States Atlantic Conference Field Hockey Honor Roll for the week ending Oct. 18. The sophomore forward was instrumental in two wins, registering four goals and an assist while helping the Griffins stretch their win streak to eight games. She scored twice, including the game winner, in a 3-2 win at Swarthmore. She followed that with two goals and an assist in a 5-1 home win over Widener. On the season, Karidas leads the league in goals (17), assists (8) and points (42) and is ranked in the top 10 of Division III in points per game.

Stephanie McGinty (Neshaminy) was one of six seniors honored prior to Rider’s home game against Robert Morris on Sunday. McGinty came to Rider as a transfer from Temple and has appeared in 13 games this season, making two starts.

Junior Marlaine Schneider (Neshaminy) scored a pair goals in Rider’s 8-0 win over Robert Morris. McGinty contributed an assist. On Thursday, Schneider contributed a pair of assists in Rider’s 3-2 win over Monmouth University.

Villanova senior Megan Goelz (Pennsbury) was named to the Big East Weekly Honor Roll after the Wildcats went 1-1 for the week ending Oct. 17. Included in that week was a huge upset over No. 20 Villanova. Goelz was honored for the 10th time in her career. She had nine saves in the OT loss to St. Joe’s and five saves in the upset win over Louisville. Goelz now leads the league in saves per game at 6.80. Villanova (7-9, 3-2) clinched a berth in the Big East Tournament. The Wildcats – who also include SOL alums Jenna Allen (Pennsbury) and Maddy Harding (Central Bucks South) – are in third place in the conference.

Brittany Varacallo (Central Bucks South) had five saves in No. 6 IUP’s 6-5 win over Bellarmine on Monday. On Wednesday, Varacallo and teammate Sarah Lemieux split time in goal and combined for five saves in IUP’s 3-0 win over Seton Hill. In Saturday’s 2-1 loss in overtime to Slippery Rock, Varacallo and Lemieux split time and combined for four saves.

Senior goalkeeper Jill Lukens (Central Bucks East) had 14 saves in Ursinus College’s 2-0 win over Dickinson on Saturday. On Tuesday, Lukens had nine saves in a 5-4 Ursinus win over Washington College. Last Sunday, Lukens had 12 saves in the Bears’ 3-1 loss to West Chester.

University of Scranton junior Gretchen Kempf (Central Bucks South) was named the Landmark Conference Offensive Player of the Week in field hockey for the week ending Oct. 17. Kempf set the tone for Scranton’s 3-0 win over Drew University by scoring her team-leading 12th goal of the season in the second minute of the first half. Kempf’s 12 goals are the most by a Royal since 1995. In the latest Landmark Conference statistical rankings, Kempf leads the league in total points (26) and is tied for first in goals per game (2.0).  She also had a goal in Scranton’s 2-1 loss to Moravian. Earlier this season, Kempf was named the Royal Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sept. 25. She had a goal and an assist in Scranton’s 5-1 win over Albright and added a pair of goals in the Royals’ 2-0 win over Goucher.

Gwynedd-Mercy junior Erin Gorenflo (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was selected the CSAC Field Hockey Player of the Week as she totaled a goal and two assists in a 2-0 week. Her two assists came vs. Keystone last Wednesday in an exciting 3-2 win that helped the Griffins (13-3, 6-0 CSAC) clinch the top playoff seed and home-field advantage. In Saturday's game at York, her penalty stroke goal late in the second half was the difference in a 3-2 win to stretch the team's win streak to 10 games.

FOOTBALL
Freshman Craig Needhammer (North Penn) scored on a four-yard touchdown run in Lycoming’s 48-14 win over Stevenson University on Saturday. Needhammer finished the day with 95 yards on 18 carries.

Sean Whelan (Central Bucks East) had four sacks while teammate Greg Martell (Neshaminy) had 11 tackles in Ursinus College’s 49-19 win over Susquehanna on Saturday.

Josh Mastromatto (Upper Dublin) had 11 catches for 131 yards – a career high – and ended the day with 217 all-purpose yards in Kutztown’s 42-30 win over C.W. Post on Saturday. He had a pair of rushing touchdowns. Junior quarterback Kevin Morton (Abington) entered the game having completed 42 of his last 47 passes. He was a catalyst in Kutztown’s 21-point first quarter dominance, going a perfect 9-for-9 with 182 yards on the first three drives of the game. He finished with 458 passing yards and three touchdowns. Junior safety Jason Ulmer (Neshaminy) picked off a pass in the fourth quarter and returned it for 22 yards.
Ryan Dickerson (Souderton) hauled in a 24-yard scoring pass in Bloomsburg’s 55-42 win over West Chester. He finished with two receptions for 40 yards in a contest that saw the Huskies rally from 35 points down for the win. It is the biggest rally in Division II history.

Dan McClellan (Neshaminy) picked off two passes and teammate Lou Brown (Upper Dublin) intercepted one in Millersville’s 31-27 win over East Stroudsburg on Saturday.

Blair Ransom (Hatboro-Horsham) had an eight-yard touchdown run in Lebanon Valley’s 57-33 loss to Widener on Saturday.

Junior Brandon McManus (North Penn) connected on a 27-yard field goal on Temple’s initial drive of the second half of Saturday’s game against Bowling Green, knotting the score 3-3. Bowling Green went on to earn a 13-10 win. McManus had a career-high nine punts for a 45.2 average.

MEN’S GOLF
Millersville’s Jeff Stokes (Hatboro-Horsham) tied for 14th with a 13-over-par score in the Goldey-Beacom Invitational.

Temple sophomore Russell Hartung (Central Bucks East) shot a 163 and tied for 75th place at the Barnabas Health Intercollegiate last weekend. Temple finished third among 17 teams.

MEN’S SOCCER
Fran Miller (Central Bucks East)
scored his team’s only goal in Bloomsburg’s 2-1 loss in double overtime to No. 8 Cal.

Sean Bonner (North Penn) contributed an assist in Eastern University’s 4-1 win over the College at Florham on Tuesday.

Jidell Roach (Abington) scored a goal in La Salle’s 2-2 tie with No. 9 Charlotte on Friday.

Shippensburg junior goalkeeper Andrew Foran (Council Rock North) was named the PSAC Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week on Oct. 17 after guiding the Raiders to three victories, including a win over No. 24 Charleston, while making 13 saves in the process. Foran started the week with a two-save shutout over Concord in nearly 100 minutes of action. Two days later, against No. 24 Charleston, Foran made a season-high eight saves while allowing just one goal. The game was a rematch of last year’s NCAA playoff meeting between the two schools. On Saturday, Foran capped off the week with a three-save shutout over Wheeling Jesuit.

Foran had three saves in Shippensburg’s 3-1 win over West Chester on Saturday. On Tuesday, he had eight saves in a 2-2 tie with East Stroudsburg. East Stroudsburg goalie Sean Murphy (North Penn) also had eight saves and had the only save in OT.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
Elizabeth Watt (Souderton)
scored a goal in Penn State Altoona’s 6-0 win over Hilbert College on Saturday. The win clinched the regular season championship in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. Last Saturday, Watt scored the go-ahead goal and also contributed an assist in Penn State Altoona’s 3-1 win over Penn State Behrend.

Kayla Joseph (Quakertown) scored her third goal of the season in Elizabethtown’s 4-0 win over Lycoming on Tuesday.

Redshirt junior Tara Murphy (Council Rock South) tied her season-high in saves on Friday as she stopped seven shots in Temple’s 1-0 loss to Xavier.

Alicia Roberts (Upper Moreland) notched her fifth goal of the season in Wilkes University’s 4-1 win over Delaware Valley College on Saturday. On Tuesday, Roberts scored a pair of goals in Wilkes University’s 4-1 win over cross-town rival King’s College.  A week earlier in Wilkes’ 4-1 win over DeSales University, Roberts scored a pair of goals.

Junior Ashley McKenna (Central Bucks South) had two goals and an assist in East Stroudsburg’s 4-0 win over Charleston on Sunday.

Jamie Vaniver (Council Rock South) contributed an assist in Bloomsburg’s 3-1 win over Charleston last Sunday.

Freshman forward Alexis Haug (Central Bucks West) scored a goal in the 40th minute in Ursinus College’s 4-2 win over Washington College on Thursday.

Cara Deola (Council Rock South) scored off an assist from Jen Hutchinson (Neshaminy) in the 40th minute as West Chester earned a 1-0 win over Shippensburg on Saturday.

Melissa Kornock (North Penn) scored a pair of goals in IUP’s 3-1 win over Bloomsburg on Saturday.

Sophomore Michelle Pool (North Penn) contributed a goal in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 5-1 win over Philadelphia Biblical on Tuesday.

Maddy Evans (Abington) came back from an injury and made her presence known, scoring an insurance goal to cement No. 14 Penn State’s 3-1 win over Michigan State on Friday afternoon.

MEN’S SWIMMING
Sophomore R.J. Phiambolis (Pennridge) and junior Mike Keefe (Neshaminy) were part of Shippensburg’s first place 400-yard medley relay team that finished with a time of 3:48.85 in Saturday afternoon’s 110-81 dual meet win over Fairmont State. Keefe captured first place in the 100 butterfly, finishing with a time of 56.21. On Tuesday, Phiambolis won a pair of events – the 200 and 500-yard freestyle – with times of 1:50.28 and 5:01.69 in Shippensburg’s 111-89 win over Bloomsburg. Keefe won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.18.

Jeremy Frey (Central Bucks East) took first place in the 200-IM with a time of 2:01.16 and was part of the 400-free relay team that was first with a time of 3:25.01 in Bloomsburg’s 111-89 loss to Shippensburg on Tuesday. Teammate Nick Ortleib (North Penn) was first in the 100-breast with a time of 1:03.46.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Junior Paige Whitmire (Souderton) was part of Penn State’s 200 medley relay that took first place in the Nittany Lions’ 137-96 win over West Virginia on Saturday. Whitmire also won the 50-yard freestyle, earning a time of 23.69 for nine points.

East Stroudsburg freshman Melissa Smith (Pennsbury) finished 11th in the 500 free at the Lock Haven Quad this weekend with a time of 5:44.62. She was part of the ninth place 400 medley relay team (4:35.64) and finished 15th in the 500 free (26.99). Smith was 14th in the 100 free (1:01.13) and was part of the seventh place 200 free relay (1:47.11).

Madeline Barlow (Pennsbury) took first in the 200-IM in Bloomsburg’s 115-90 win over Shippensburg on Tuesday.

Senior Kasey Campbell Blesh (Neshaminy) is one of four returning swimmers on Lock Haven’s squad that had NCAA cut times last year and currently holds the school record for the 1,000 and 1,650 freestyle.

Junior Megan Lafferty (Upper Dublin) captured first place in the 50 free with a time of 23.08 in the University of Maryland’s 186-111 win over Duke on Saturday. She also was part of the first place 200 medley (1:42.94) and the first place 200 free relay (1:33.12). In Saturday’s 206-94 win over North Carolina State, Lafferty was part of the first place 200 medley (1:43.74), and she also touched the wall first in the 50 free (23.24). Teammate Melanie Busch (William Tennent) finished first in the 100 back with a time of 56.69.

WOMEN’S TENNIS
Freshman Allison Bean (Neshaminy) was part of East Stroudsburg’s No. 2 doubles team that earned an 8-2 win in the Warriors’ 8-1 loss to Bloomsburg on Monday.

Gwynedd-Mercy sophomore Rachel Fein (Wissahickon) repeated as the CSAC Player of the Year. Teammate Taylor Michener (Central Bucks South) received honorable mention recognition in singles.

Fein scored a win at number one singles (6-1, 6-0) and was part of a number two doubles team that earned an 8-1 win in Gwynedd’s 5-0 win over Baptist Bible in the semifinal of the 2011 CSAC Women’s Tennis Team Tournament. Michener was part of the number two doubles team that earned an 8-1 win.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Sophomore Brittany O’Hara (Pennridge) had eight kills in Moravian College’s 3-1 win over Lycoming College. In Moravian’s 3-0 win over the United States Merchant Marine Academy, O’Hara had four blocks and two kills. In Moravian’s 3-1 loss to Susquehanna, O’Hara had three kills and one block.

Freshman Devon Maugle (Plymouth Whitemarsh) contributed 14 kills and seven digs in UConn’s 3-2 loss to Georgetown on Sunday. In Friday’s 3-1 loss to Villanova, Maugle had 10 kills and eight digs.

Sarah Godfrey (William Tennent) had 10 kills in Lebanon Valley’s 3-0 win over Arcadia on Tuesday.

Freshman Julie Harvey (Hatboro-Horsham) led Franklin & Marshall’s offense with 20 kills – her highest total for a three-set match this season – and tallied a .459 hitting percentage in the Diplomats 3-0 win over Washington College on Saturday. In the Diplomats’ 3-0 win over Catholic University, Harvey notched 16 kills and a .500 hitting percentage to pace the offense.

Lindsay Palm (Council Rock North) had a team-high 18 kills in Elizabethtown’s 3-1 win over Goucher on Saturday. On Tuesday, Palm had 11 kills in Elizabethtown’s 3-2 loss to Widener.

MEN’S WATER POLO
Washington & Jefferson College freshman Carl Krause (Wissahickon) led the Presidents’ offense with eight goals in a trio of Southern Division-West Region victories to earn the Oct. 17 Men’s Varsity Southern Division Rookie of the Week award. Krause, who added six steals, four assists and one kickout drawn to his totals, posted four goals against Pennsylvania State University-Behrend (a 7-6 win) and a solo strike in a 17-8 win over Salem International University to aid the Presidents in finishing third in the Western Region.
