MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Sophomore Owen Ward (Harry S. Truman) led Chestnut Hill College at the CACC Meet for the second straight year, finishing 21st overall and completing the men’s 8K in 29:44.45. Chestnut Hill finished seventh out of 10 teams. It was their best finish ever.
Sophomore Sean Duffy (Council Rock South) finished 16th with a time of 25:58 in Bloomsburg’s tri-meet against Bucknell and Susquehanna on Saturday.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Elizabethtown’s Tiffany Kulp (Pennridge) finished eighth with a time of 26:28.19 in the 6,205 meter run in the Battle for the Buggy at Lancaster County Park on Saturday. Elizabethtown finished fifth out of 12 teams competing in the meet.
FIELD HOCKEY
Junior Katie O’Donnell (Wissahickon) contributed a goal and an assist in top-ranked Maryland’s 4-1 win over second-ranked North Carolina on Saturday. The Terps improved to 17-0 – a first in school history – and guaranteed themselves the number one seed in the upcoming ACC tournament. Freshman Marlaine Schneider (Neshaminy) was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week for the fourth time this season. Schneider had a goal and an assist in Rider’s 3-0 NEC win over Bryant University on Oct. 16. The freshman forward has points in seven of her last nine games and leads all rookies in the conference with 16 points (six goals, four assists). Schneider was also recognized by the NEC on Oct. 12, Sept. 28 and Sept. 21. This is the second time this season that Schneider has won the award in back-to-back weeks. Rider is 13-1 on the season.
Freshman Gretchen Kempf (Central Bucks South) is the leading scorer for the University of Scranton. She has contributed seven goals and three assists and has started 14 of 15 games. She had a hat trick in Scranton’s 4-3 overtime loss to Susquehanna.
Junior Jenny Purvis (Hatboro-Horsham) scored her first goal of the season in Penn State’s 6-4 win over Pacific on Saturday afternoon. Christine Dudek (Souderton) added an assist. Goalie Ali Meves (Wissahickon) turned away nine shots for the Nittany Lions, who improved to 6-11 on the season.
Villanova goalie Megan Goelz (Pennsbury) had 14 saves, but it wasn’t enough to hold off fifth-ranked Syracuse in a Big East contest on Friday night as the visiting Orange earned a 5-3 win. Nicole Nelson (Souderton) is in the starting lineup for Syracuse, which is ranked fifth nationally.
Freshman Amanda Fleischut (Central Bucks West) contributed a goal in Drexel’s 5-2 win over Villanova on Sunday afternoon. Drexel, ranked 12th, improved to 13-2 while Villanova fell to 8-6.
Caitlin Koczynski (Neshaminy) had five saves in Bloomsburg’s 3-0 win over Mercyhurst College on Sunday. On Friday, Breanne Tobin (Pennridge) scored a goal in Bloomsburg’s 4-0 win over Millersville. Bloomsburg (18-1) will begin its quest for a PSAC championship on Friday at Shippensburg. The Huskies will be the number one seed from the East. Bloomsburg remains atop the Kookaburra/NFHCA Division II National Coaches Poll. Tobin second on the team in scoring with 15 goals and four assists. Koczynski has a goals-against average of 0.93 with 54 saves (79.4 save percentage). Both Tobin and Koczynski have been selected to play in the 2009 NFHCA Division II North/South Senior All-Star Game at Wake Forest University. The game will take place on Nov. 21 during the Division I Final Four.
Junior Jennifer Mullen (Hatboro-Horsham) had five saves in East Stroudsburg’s 9-1 win over Mansfield on Thursday.
Senior Lauren Hollingsworth (Council Rock South) scored a goal in Shippensburg’s 10-1 win over Seton Hall on Saturday. Senior Amanda Houser (Council Rock South) had two saves in 50 minutes in the cage. The Lady Raiders (18-1) matched a school record for goals in the win. The 2009 senior class, which includes Hollingsworth and Houser, has compiled a 65-20 record over their careers while qualifying for the PSAC tournament in all four seasons.
Caitlin Donahue (Neshaminy) had a game-high nine saves to lead Cabrini to a 1-0 upset of 12th ranked The College of New Jersey on Thursday. Donahue had five first-half saves and added four more in the second, but her biggest stop came early in the contest when she collected a diving save to her right of a penalty stroke.
Casey Hughes (Souderton) scored a goal in Lock Haven’s 3-1 win over Sacred Heart on Friday. The Lady Eagles improved to 15-3 overall, 6-0 NEC.
Junior Megan Purcell (Pennridge) had three saves in Widener’s 1-0 win over Alvernia on Wednesday.
FOOTBALL
Mattan Hoffman (Neshaminy) had three catches for 32 yards in The College of New Jersey’s 16-13 loss to Montclair State on Saturday. TCNJ saw its record drop to 4-3 on the season.
Jon Natter (Abington) had 12 tackles (nine solos) in Widener’s 31-17 loss to 24th ranked Albright on Saturday. Wildener fell to 3-4 on the season.
Junior outside linebacker Matt Freed (Souderton) had 11 tackles, his sixth game in double figures this season, in East Stroudsburg’s 42-24 loss to C.W. Post on Saturday. The Warriors fell to 6-3 overall (3-3 in PSAC play).
Nick Gounaris (Pennsbury) had seven tackles in Lock Haven’s 27-0 loss to Gannon on Saturday. The Bald Eagles are 0-8 overall.
Steve Miller (Pennsbury) hauled in a pair of touchdown passes in West Chester’s 59-0 rout of Cheney on Thursday night. Miller had four receptions for 77 yards. D’Andre Webb (Harry S. Truman) scored on a one-yard plunge. Jackson Fagan (Pennsbury) led all players with 57 yards rushing on nine carries, averaging 6.1 yards per rush. Senior defensive back Kevin Garland (Hatboro-Horsham) returned an interception 43 yards for a touchdown. Sophomore Scott Bradish (Council Rock North) saw action under center for the Golden Rams (5-4, 4-2 PSAC East).
MEN’S SOCCER
Freshman Alex Ruhfass (Council Rock North) turned a pass from Tim Pfender (Neshaminy) into a goal in Bloomsburg’s 4-2 win over Shippensburg on Saturday. The Huskies are 9-5-2 overall (4-2-1 in the PSAC East). Matt Henry (Springfield) scored a goal in Bloomsburg’s 3-0 non-conference win over Chestnut Hill on Tuesday.
Marywood University (Scranton, Pa.) rallied for a 2-1 overtime win over Rosemont on Saturday. Midway through the period, Rosemont had a flurry of shots, forcing goalie El Gayeh to make two spectacular saves and defenders Brian Wasser (Souderton) and Chris Rodzewich (Souderton) to make diving efforts to keep the ball out of the net. The Pacers clinched their second straight CSAC playoff berth while improving to 7-6-2 on the season and 5-1-1 in conference play. On Wednesday, Marywood battled defending conference champion Cabrini College to a 0-0 tie in Colonial States Athletic Conference play. The two squads are tied for second place in the CSAC. Rodzewich and Sean O'Day helped Marywood earn its fifth shutout of the season.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Sophomore defender Meghan Collins (North Penn) has seen action in 14 games and started nine for the University of Massachusetts women’s soccer team. She played in all 18 games as a freshman.
Sophomore Courtney Collins (North Penn) has started 18 games for a Providence squad that is 8-8-3 on the season. Collins has scored two goals and contributed two assists.
Freshman Julia Goldsworthy (Central Bucks South) has seen action in 16 games for the 15th ranked Virginia Tech women’s soccer team. She has one goal and two assists.
Senior Kelly Modes (Neshaminy) scored a goal in Bloomsburg’s 3-1 win over Shippensburg on Saturday. The Huskies improved to 6-7-3 overall (4-4-2 in PSAC play). Modes had a goal in Bloomsburg’s 2-0 non-conference win over Chestnut Hill on Wednesday night. Kelsey Stoka (Neshaminy) had an assist.
Senior forward Gayle Kuntzmann (Hatboro-Horsham) scored two goals for Shippensburg in the Lady Raiders 2-2 tie with East Stroudsburg on Tuesday. Forward Devon Miniscalco (Council Rock South) scored for ESU. It was Miniscalco’s 10th goal of the season. She is the top scorer on an offense that has generated 50 goals in 16 games, the most in the PSAC. Shippensburg is 5-7-3 overall, 2-4-3 PSAC East) while ESU is 10-4-2 overall (4-3-2 PSAC East).
MEN’S SWIMMING
Tim Dorsch (Souderton) finished first in the 100-breast (1:02.23) and the 200-breast (2:19.54) in Bloomsburg’s 136-121 win over Albright on Saturday. Ben Safran (Central Bucks West) took first in the 200-fly with a time of 2:03.81. Nick Ortlieb (North Penn) was part of the men’s 200-medley relay that finished first with a time of 1:41.51.
Junior Jesse Bregman (Springfield) took first in the 50-yard freestyle (22.18) and the 100-yard freestyle (47.82) in Widener’s 142-118 loss to Drexel on Wednesday. Senior Matt Slomiany (North Penn) was second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:37.23) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:06.94).
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Senior Heather Van O’Linda (Norristown) was part of East Stroudsburg’s 200 medley relay that finished second at Saturday’s dual meet against Misericordia and Kutztown. She also finished sixth in the 100 breast, fourth in the 100 free and was part of the third place 200 free relay. Samantha Hoch (Norristown) finished eighth in the 1000 free (13:17.60) and 11th in the 500 free (6:41.40). Amy Rowland (Upper Moreland) was seventh in the 100 back (1:09.41) and fifth in the 200 back (2:31.32). ESU defeated Misericordia but fell to Kutztown.
Freshman Megan Lafferty (Upper Dublin) won the 100 back and was a member of the 400 free relay team in Maryland's win over rivals Duke and North Carolina State to open up the ACC portion of its 2009-10 season.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Megan Nessen (Harry S. Truman) was part of Becker College's #2 flight doubles team that captured the championship at the Northeast Collegiate Conference individual and doubles championships. Nessen and Laura Mimms won a heated match in a tiebreaker (8-8, 14-12). Becker went on to defeat Bay Path 6-3 to capture the team championship. In #2 doubles, Nessen and Mimms earned an 8-6 win.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Christina Laury (Hatboro-Horsham) had 34 digs in Lock Haven’s sweep of West Chester and Bowie State on Saturday. In Friday’s 3-2 win over Kutztown, Laury had a team-high 30 digs.
Senior Meredith Sinback (Pennsbury) had 10 kills, 12 digs and 35 assists for a triple-double in Millersville’s 3-1 win over Shippensburg on Tuesday.
