MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Freshman Nick Scarpello (Central Bucks West) ran a 25:55 8K to help Penn State finish fifth in the Notre Dame Invitational. The Lions finished with a total of 205 points for a fifth place finish overall, following only No. 3 Oregon (69 points), No. 16 New Mexico (78), No. 21 Florida State (99) and Tulsa (196). The effort yielded victories over a wealth of talented opponents with No. 30 UCLA in sixth (206), Notre Dame in seventh (208), fifth-ranked Alabama in eighth (242), UTEP in ninth (260), and Indiana State in 10th (260). The Lions would also secure wins over No. 14 Villanova, No. 17 Arizona State and No. 28 Butler. Scarpello also ran an 18:37 6K, placing 11th overall, to lead Penn State in its Sept. 3 dual meet win over Lock Haven University.
Shippensburg senior Sean Stetler (Central Bucks South) posted a 69th place finish in 24:50 that set a new 8K cross country PR by six seconds in the 9th Annual Louisville Classic on Saturday. The Raiders finished fifth as a team, and all seven of its top runners established new 8K cross country PRs.
Chestnut Hill junior Owen Ward (Harry S. Truman) finished 9th with a time of 31:28.10 at the Belmont Plateau Classic on Saturday. The men’s team combined for 154 team points and finished sixth out of 14 teams.
Widener sophomore Ryan Gallagher (Neshaminy) finished 28th with a time of 27:11 at the Paul Short Run.
Millersville redshirt freshman Seth Hibbs (Hatboro-Horsham) finished 100th with a time of 26:55 at the Paul Short Invitational on Friday. Millersville placed 13th out of a field of 40 teams.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Sophomore Kristina Koutsouros (Cheltenham) placed first in the college women's race at the Paul Short Invitational, leading West Chester to a 15th place finish out of 36 teams and 278 runners on Friday afternoon. Koutsouros picked up her first college win in a time of 22 minutes, four seconds. It was the fastest time run by a Golden Ram on this course in the past six years.
Millersville’s Michelle Blum (Central Bucks East) posted a time of 23:48 to finish 122nd at the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University. Millersville finished sixth among 41 teams.
Kutztown freshman Carolyn Fergus (North Penn) posted a time of 24:20 at the Paul Short Invitational.
Lock Haven junior Courtney Whitemoyer (Neshaminy) posted a time of 24:26 at the Paul Short Invitational.
Temple senior Rebecca Mims (Upper Dublin) finished 86th at the Paul Short Invitational with a time of 23:31. Teammate Karrie Finn (Council Rock North) finished with a time of 24:22.
FIELD HOCKEY
Senior Katie O’Donnell (Wissahickon) notched her sixth career hat trick in Sunday afternoon’s 4-3 win over No. 19 Michigan. In Friday night’s showdown against No. 3 Virginia, O’Donnell scored on a corner to give Maryland a 2-1 overtime win. She also contributed an assist. On Tuesday night, O’Donnell scored a goal in the Terps’ 4-2 loss to Princeton. The Terps (9-1, 3-0 ACC) are ranked No. 1 in the latest Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll.
Casey McCartin (Hatboro-Horsham) and Jessica Longstreth (Council Rock North) each contributed a pair of assists in Penn State’s 7-2 win over Monmouth on Sunday afternoon. Jenny Purvis (Hatboro-Horsham) and Ali Meves (Wissahickon) were part of a group of seniors who were recognized for their dedication, leadership and contributions to the Penn State field hockey program as part of the Senior Day celebration. On Saturday, Longstreth had three assists in Penn State’s 5-3 win over Iowa. The Nittany Lions are ranked 15th in the latest poll.
Sophomore Rebecca Chylack (Souderton) and freshman Olivia Shoemaker (Souderton) both had a goal and an assist in LaSalle’s 6-2 win over Bryant on Saturday. Earlier in the week, Chylack was named the Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Co-Performer of the Week. Chylack had a hand in all four Explorer goals in a 2-0 weekend, scoring two and assisting on two more. In a 3-2 win over Lehigh last Saturday, Chylack assisted on the first goal of the game and added two more, including the game-winner. She assisted on the OT game-winner in a 1-0 win over St. Francis (PA) on Sunday. Chylack leads the Explorers with four goals, three assists and 11 points. The recognition is her fourth A-10 weekly award after receiving three Rookie of the Week citations last season.
Senior forward Brittany Kocis (Central Bucks East) contributed a goal and two assists in East Stroudsburg’s 3-2 win at Bloomsburg on Saturday, extending the Warriors winning streak to a school-record nine games. Kocis is among the national leaders in assists with nine. ESU (9-0, 3-0) moved up one spot to No. 3 in this week’s NFHCA Division II Coaches Poll.
Sophomore Caitlin Vasey (Central Bucks East) contributed a goal in Lebanon Valley’s 4-1 win over Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday. The undefeated Dutchmen (9-0) held a 32-10 advantage in shots.  On Thursday, Vasey contributed three assists in Lebanon Valley’s 7-2 win over Susquehanna. Vasey became just the fifth player in program history to reach 25 career assists. The sophomore is also the fastest to get there, doing so in just 31 games.
Freshman Kiersten Ryan (Harry S. Truman) scored a goal in Rensselear’s 3-2 loss to Rowan University on Saturday. Ryan was in the starting lineup for the second time this season on Saturday. The Engineers are 3-7 on the season.
Senior Megan Purcell (Pennridge) was credited with eight saves in goal in Widener’s 3-2 win over Gwynedd-Mercy on Tuesday.
Jenna Phillips (Hatboro-Horsham) turned away eight shots in #18 Drexel’s 3-2 win over James Madison University on Saturday. On Friday, Phillips made six second-half saves as Drexel was outshot 11-0 but held on for a 3-1 win over VCU. Phillips finished the day with seven saves. On Tuesday, Phillips turned away five shots in Drexel’s 2-1 win over Villanova. Drexel is 8-3 overall, 3-0 CAA.
Sophomore Marlaine Schneider (Neshaminy) contributed an assist in Rider’s 5-1 win over West Chester last Friday.
FOOTBALL
In East Stroudsburg’s 26-13 loss to Bloomsburg on Saturday, redshirt senior outside linebacker Matt Freed (Souderton) led the Warriors’ defense with 17 tackles, the second most in his career which includes two straight All-America campaigns. Freed has 13 or more tackles in eight of his 28 career starts and 19 double-figure efforts.
Kevin Morton (Abington) tied his career high by throwing four touchdown passes in a game on Saturday in a contest that saw Kutztown score the final 26 points as it overcame a 17-point deficit to defeat Shippensburg. The win kept the Golden Bears’ record perfect at 5-0, 2-0 PSAC East. It is the best start in school history. Morton overcame a pair of first-quarter interceptions to finish with 238 passing yards and 93 rushing yards in a contest that saw the Golden Bears accumulate 409 yards of total offense.
Junior running back Kahlil Pittman (Abington) had a 26-yard scoring run in Ursinus College’s 49-39 win over Gettysburg on Saturday. Junior defensive end Sean Whelan (Central Bucks East) forced a fumble on a sack.
MEN’S SOCCER
Sophomore forward Matt MacWilliams (North Penn) scored on a cross in the 27th minute of Temple’s 2-0 win over Rutgers on Wednesday.
WOMEN’S’ SOCCER
Kelsey Stoka (Neshaminy) Shares the team lead in goals scored with four for the Bloomsburg University women’s soccer team which is ranked number 13 in the nation, according to the latest NSCAA /Hendrickcars.com women’s soccer weekly poll. In addition, the Huskies have been slotted as the No. 2 team in the Atlantic region by the same organization.
Temple junior keeper Tara Murphy (Council Rock South) was solid in goal in the Owls’ 1-1 tie with Richmond on Sunday. Murphy made 14 saves in the match, including eight in the second half. On Saturday, Murphy made four saves in a defensive first half in Temple’s 2-1 loss to George Washington. Senior Kelly Diviny (Council Rock South) contributed an assist. It was her team-best sixth assist of the year.
Goalkeeper Gabby Pakhtigian (North Penn) came up with three of her season-high eight saves in the first 12 minutes of LaSalle’s 2-0 loss to Dayton on Sunday. The Flyers outshot LaSalle 24-6, but Pakhtigian’s effort allowed the Explorers to keep the game close.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Senior outside hitter Alyson Stark (Council Rock South) had 12 kills and 10 digs for the 10th double-double of her career to lead East Stroudsburg to a 3-1 win over Queens on Saturday at the ESU State Farm Classic at Koehler Fieldhouse.
