MEN’S BASKETBALL
Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown) scored a team-high 18 points in Bloomsburg’s 74-72 win over Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday. All of his points came from beyond the three-point arc where he connected on 6-of-9 shots. In Thursday’s season opening 85-66 loss to Wheeling Jesuit, Christmas had nine points.
CJ Aiken (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had 12 points and added five blocks in Saint Joseph’s 72-61 win over Western Kentucky in the season opener for both teams on Friday night.
Guard Nick Christian (Bensalem) had 11 points in Philadelphia University’s 84-78 loss to Kutztown on Saturday.
Freshman Julian Bond (Plymouth Whitemarsh) is projected to play a major role as the point guard for Lock Haven this season. Stephon Baker (Plymouth Whitemarsh) will also be looking to play a part in the backcourt for the Bald Eagles.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Millersville redshirt junior Mashira Newman (Upper Dublin) was selected to the PSAC East Preseason All-Conference team. It is the second straight season she has received this honor. Newman led the team with 36.2 minutes per game and was second in points per game with 14.7. Her 118 steals led the team and the conference last season, and her 4.1 steals per game ranked her third in all of Division II. Newman recorded a team-leading 148 assists to rank her atop the PSAC and 19th in Division II. Also returning for Millersville this season is senior Sophia Waters (Norristown), who averaged 9.4 points per game and led the team in three-pointers made with 40. Millersville, which has appeared in 15 straight PSAC Tournaments, is picked second in the PSAC East preseason poll.
Redshirt freshman Emily Leer (Abington) had a pair of three-point baskets and scored seven points in Villanova’s 76-47 win over Iona in the championship game of the Iona Tipoff Tournament on Saturday.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Penn State sophomore Nick Scarpello (Central Bucks West) finished 38th with a time of 31:32 in Saturday’s NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore. Penn State finished fourth.
Gwynedd-Mercy junior James Rogers (Cheltenham) finished in 110th place with a time of 28:09 at the 2011 NCAA Division II Mideast Regional Championships on Saturday. The Griffins finished eighth out of 47 teams, their highest in program history.
La Salle senior Nick Crits (Wissahickon) finished 17th with a time of 31:02 at Saturday’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships. Out of 25 scoring teams, La Salle finished in sixth place. They were the highest ranked Atlantic 10 team in the standings.
Junior Sam Stortz (Upper Dublin) took top honors for Ursinus, finishing with a time of 27:09 in the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional on Saturday. Ursinus finished 24th overall.
Widener junior Ryan Gallagher (Neshaminy) finished with a time of 27:46 in the NCAA Mideast Regional on Saturday. The Pride finished 16th out of 47 schools.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Temple sophomore Taylor Goldsworthy (Central Bucks South) finished in 126th place with a time of 24:50 in Saturday’s NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore. The Owls finished 22nd overall in the 29-team race.
FIELD HOCKEY
Lebanon Valley’s Caitlin Vasey (Central Bucks East) received second team All-Commonwealth Conference honors after serving as offensive catalyst in midfield. A third team all-American in 2010, she scored six goals with seven assists and often set up the Dutchmen forwards with possession runs through the midfield.
On Saturday, Vasey became Lebanon Valley’s all-time assist leader in the Dutchmen’s 4-3 win over Stevens Tech in an ECAC Mid-Atlantic semifinal game.
Christina Maida (Central Bucks East) made four stops in Princeton’s 3-2 loss to fifth-ranked UConn in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament on Saturday.
Messiah freshman Becky Ely (Council Rock North) was named Commonwealth Conference Rookie of the Year. Ely, a midfielder and defender, started every game for the Falcons this season, helping solidify a midfield that graduated two-time National Player of the Year, Julie Barton. She contributed to the Falcons’ four shutouts and a 22-2 scoring differential in conference play.
Senior Casey McCartin (Hatboro-Horsham) saw her career at Penn State come to an end when the Nittany Lions fell to No. 4 seeded UConn in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday. On Saturday, the Nittany Lions earned a 1-0 win over Northeastern.
Ursinus senior Jill Lukens (Central Bucks East) was named to the 2011 All-Centennial Conference second team. She posted a 1.60 goals against average and made 129 saves. She was fifth in the conference in saves.
Lukens collected eight saves in Ursinus College’s 3-1 season-ending loss to Messiah College in the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament on Saturday. On Wednesday, Lukens had eight saves in the Golden Bears’ 3-1 win over Christopher Newport in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.
Villanova senior goalie Megan Goelz (Pennsbury) was named to the Big East All-Tournament Team following the Wildcats’ 3-0 semifinal defeat at the hands of Syracuse. Goelz had four saves in the contest, but Syracuse had consistent offensive pressure, and the senior goalie was part of a strong defensive effort that kept the Orange in check for much of the game.
FOOTBALL
Senior Mike Bergey (Souderton) forced a pair of fumbles in East Stroudsburg’s 27-26 win over Edinboro that saw the Warriors rally from 17 points down to win at the buzzer. He set a career high in tackles in each of the last two games with 15 against Shippensburg last week and 19 against Edinboro. He had 13 solo stops versus Edinboro, along with 2.5 tackles for a loss and a sack. For his performance against Edinboro, Bergey was named the PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week for the final week of the 2011 season. His 19 tackles were the most in the PSAC this season.
Bergey had 110 tackles this season, including 65 solo tackles, 45 assists, 10 TFL, 1.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries while starting all 11 games. He joins former ESU and Souderton teammate Matt Freed (Souderton) as recent Warriors with 100-tackle seasons. Bergey, the only player in his class to letter as a true freshman, closed out his collegiate career with 248 tackles in 45 games and 22 starts. He has played in every game over the last four seasons.
ESU senior cornerback Shawnte Carroll (Harry S. Truman), who made his 34th career start, had two tackles, a pass breakup, and he also recovered one of the fumbles forced by Bergey in the end zone. He had six career interceptions and set school records with four interceptions in a game and two returns for TDs in the regular season finale in 2009.
Kutztown University junior quarterback Kevin Morton (Abington) is one of 24 nominees for the prestigious Harlon Hill Trophy, which honors the NCAA Division II College Football Player of the Year. He is the PSAC’s most efficient passer (164.6) and is third in the PSAC in total offense (280.4) and passing yards (262.0). Kutztown’s offense leads the PSAC in scoring, averaging 41 points per game. Morton has now thrown 140 pass attempts without an interception, spanning over five games. He is fifth in Division II in passing efficiency, 17th in total passing yards (2,620) and spearheads an offense that ranks 16th in the nation in total offense and leads the PSAC (490.9).
Marshall Vogel (Hatboro-Horsham) led Kutztown on a game-winning touchdown drive to lift the Golden Bears to a 21-14 win over Slippery Rock on Saturday, giving Kutztown its first PSAC championship in the 96-year history of the program. The drive began at Kutztown’s own 33-yard line, and Vogel put together a six-play 67-yard drive that culminated with Vogel tossing a fade to the back corner of the end zone for teammate Erik Frazier, who came up with a diving catch in double coverage to give KU the late seven-point advantage. Vogel was called into action early in the second quarter after Morton went down with a knee injury. Vogel had not seen the field that often but 
finished with a career-high 300 passing yards on 25-for-39 passing with two scores. For his performance in Kutztown’s win in the PSAC championship game, Vogel was named this week’s PSAC Offensive Athlete of the Week. Josh Mastromatto (Upper Dublin) finished the game with five catches for 34 yards, which included a 16-yard TD reception. He also had 39 yards on eight carries. Jason Ulmer (Neshaminy) and Alex DiNolfi (Norristown) each had interceptions in the win. Ulmer’s 16-yard return late in the third quarter would put KU in the red zone. DiNolfi came up with a diving interception early in the second quarter to give him nine on the season. The junior – who also had seven tackles - leads Division II in interceptions and is one away from tying a 35-year old single-season record.Brett Moss (Bensalem) finished with eight tackles.
Junior placekicker Brandon McManus (North Penn) was one of three Temple players recognized by the College Football Performance Awards. All three received honorable mention national player of the week accolades. Named the HM kickoff specialist, McManus made a 27-yard field goal and four points after touchdown to extend his consecutive streak to 33 makes in Temple’s 35-31 loss at Ohio last week. McManus kicked off six times for 414 yards (69.0 average). He also punted five times for 215 yards (43.0 avg.), two of which landed inside the 20. This is McManus’ fifth weekly honor from the CFP this season.
McManus connected on a 32-yard field goal in Temple’s 24-21 win over Miami on Wednesday. For the second consecutive week, McManus received honorable mention recognition from the College Football Performance Awards. He not only had the 32-yard field goal on the opening drive, he also had three points after touchdown to extend his consecutive streak to 36 makes. He also kicked off five times for 350 yards, averaging a career-high 70.0 yards per kickoff. He also punted six times for 249 yards (41.5 average), three of which landed inside the 20, also a career best. On the career charts, McManus is No. 2 in field goals (41) and No. 3 in career points with 235. In this week’s national statistics, McManus is No. 5 in punting (46.15). This is McManus’ sixth weekly honor from the CFP this season.
Ryan Dickerson (Souderton) had 25 yards receiving in No. 21 Bloomsburg’s 34-3 win over Lock Haven on Saturday.
Senior Kahlil Pittman (Abington) finished with a game-high six catches for 76 yards and a touchdown in Ursinus College’s 34-16 win over Dickinson in its season finale on Saturday.
Freshman Craig Needhammer (North Penn) had nine carries for 114 yards and a touchdown in Lycoming’s 54-7 win over FDU-Florham on Saturday. The Warriors set a school-record with 616 yards of offense.
MEN’S SOCCER
La Salle’s Jidell Roach (Abington) earned honorable mention Atlantic 10 accolades. Roach, also a 2010 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie pick, earned recognition for his play in the midfield. He chipped in five points for the Explorers on two goals and one assist. He scored a goal in the team’s 2-2 draw with #10/9 Charlotte and also added the insurance goal in a 4-0 win over Saint Joseph’s that clinched the A-10 tournament berth. Roach added a game-winning assist at Army to help the squad to its first win of 2011.
Lafayette junior Sean Peckham (Central Bucks East) earned first team All-Patriot League honors for the 2011 season. He is one of just two student-athletes to earn back-to-back first team honors. The junior midfielder, who handles the Leopards’ corner and direct kicking duties, scored one goal and tallied six assists in 15 matches – leading all Patriot League players with 0.40 assists per match.
Junior Alex Supplee (North Penn) scored a goal in Shippensburg’s 4-2 loss to No. 24 California in Thursday’s NCAA first round contest.
Elizabethtown’s Geoff Cochrane (Council Rock South) earned second team All-Commonwealth Conference honors. He scored two goals and added five assists for nine points while starting all 15 games. His five assists led the Blue Jays and was tied for fifth in the conference. The defender had a three-point game (one goal, one assist) in a 4-1 win over Susquehanna.
Eastern University’s Sean Bonner (North Penn) earned second team all-Middle Atlantic Conference honors. He was the glue in the middle of the field for the Eagles and was invaluable in transition attacking and defending. Bonner was third among Eastern field players in minutes played.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Freshman Cara Deola (Council Rock South) scored both of West Chester’s goals as the fifth-seeded Golden Rams downed fourth-seeded Edinboro 2-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Tournament on Friday. Deola broke a scoreless tie in the 76th minute when she scored off a rebound of a header on a shot by teammate Dana Hunt. Deola then notched her fifth goal of the season 11 minutes later.
IUP’s Melissa Kornock (North Penn) was named to the 2011 All-PSAC first team. Kornock, a senior, is a three-time All-PSAC selection. She finished her career at IUP by recording 13 goals and a team-high seven assists this season. Kornock was fifth in the PSAC in assists per game and sixth in total points with 33. She is sixth in IUP history with 35 career goals.
MEN’S SWIMMING
Jeremy Frey (Central Bucks East) achieved two PSAC cuts in the 200 back and 400 IM in Bloomsburg’s 144.5-117.5 loss to Clarion on Saturday. His winning time in the 200 back was 1:59.52 while his 400 IM time was 4:23.96. Teammate Mark DiLemmo (Central Bucks East) posted a cut in the 200 fly with a time of 2:01.85.
Junior Dan Fitzgerald (Upper Dublin) was part of La Salle’s winning 200-medley relay. The Explorers defeated Rider 153-145 but fell to Delaware 162.50-137-50 on Saturday.
Jake Myers (Council Rock North) was a triple winner in Washington and Jefferson’s 138-100 win over Baldwin-Wallace on Saturday. Myers captured first place in the 200 (1:51.28) and 500 (5:08.70) freestyle events. He also swam a leg on the winning 200 freestyle relay that finished with a time of 1:31.81.
Freshman T.J. Guminski (Hatboro-Horsham) was part of the winning 200-yard medley relay in Lycoming’s sweep of Elizabethtown and Messiah in Saturday’s dual meet.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Julia DeVincent (Upper Dublin) achieved PSAC cuts in the 50 freestyle and the 200 freestyle in Bloomsburg’s 136-126 loss to Clarion. She also was part of the 400 free relay that finished with a time of 3:37.43, losing by just 0.25 seconds. Teammate Kelly Duggan (Central Bucks West) turned in a career best in the 200 breast with a time of 2:36.97.
Chelsea Kozior (Council Rock South) was part of the winning 400 free relay that finished with a time of 3:46.59 in Ursinus College’s 51-44 win over McDaniel. She also won the 200 back with a time of 2:03.88. On Wednesday, Kozior was second in the 200 free with a time of 2:02.42 in Ursinus College’s 116-89 loss to Albright.
Megan Lafferty (Upper Dublin) finished first in the 50 free (23.31) and 100 fly (55.77) in the University of Maryland’s 202-98 win over UMBC on Saturday. She was also part of the 200 medley relay (4:43.98) and 200 free relay (1:34.70) that had first place finishes. Teammate Melanie Busch (William Tennent) won the 100 back with a time of 57.10 for the Terps, who are ranked 19th in the latest CSCAA Women’s Division I Top 25 poll.

Freshman Jan Ikeda (North Penn) made the NCAA B cut in the 100-meter fly, becoming the first swimmer in program history to do so in Lebanon Valley’s 107-98 win over Marywood on Friday night. Ikeda finished in 1:03.70, well under the NCAA 25-meter B cut of 1:04.48 with the A cut standing at 1:02.40. She took just under a second off her previous best and school record 1:04.69. It capped a memorable night for Ikeda, who also set a new school record in the 200 free (2:14.01) and swam a 29.07 fly split in the 200 medley relay to help them win in 2:11.96. Last Saturday, Ikeda won three events, including a new school record in the 200 IM, to lead Lebanon Valley to a 138-67 win over Hood. Ikeda swam in the 200 IM for the first time, setting the yard record of 2:18.48 and winning the event by nearly 12 seconds. She also won the 100 free (56.21) and 500 free (5:33.33). For her performance against Hood, Ikeda was named the Middle Atlantic Conference Swimmer of the Week. She is Lebanon Valley’s first ever swimmer of the week since the award began last year.
West Chester’s Kelsey Tennett (Hatboro-Horsham) won both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard competitions in a diving tri-meet against Wagner and Rowan on Saturday. Tennett qualified for NCAAs off the 1m board. She scored a 265.30 on the 1m board to claim that event. That score was good enough to qualify her for the NCAA Division II Diving Championships in March. Her score of 245.70 in the 3m competition was good enough for first place as well.
La Salle senior Laura McLaughlin (North Penn) swept the 1-meter (250.80) and 3-meter (243.60) dives in the Explorers’ tri-meet with Rider and Delaware on Saturday. La Salle defeated Rider 175-119 but lost to Delaware 168-130.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Elizabethtown junior middle hitter Lindsay Palm (Council Rock North) earned first team All-Commonwealth Conference honors. It is the third straight year she received all-conference honors and has been on the first team for two years running. The league’s 2009 Rookie of the Year led the team in kills (241), hitting percentage (.338) and block solos (26). Palm also ranked second on the team in total blocks with 69. Appearing in all 28 matches and 109 sets, she led the conference in hitting percentage.
Freshman Devon Maugle (Plymouth Whitemarsh) posted her fourth double-double of the season with a 14-kill, 14-dig effort in UConn’s 3-2 loss to Seton Hall in Sunday’s season finale.
Franklin & Marshall freshman Julie Harvey (Hatboro-Horsham) has been named the 
Centennial Conference (CC) Volleyball Co-Player of the Year. She becomes the first ever freshman and fifth Diplomat to receive the honor. Harvey led the Diplomats in hitting percentage (.340), kills (358) and blocks (56) and finished tops in the CC in hitting percentage, second in both kills and points (4.11 per game) and 10th in blocks. Harvey was one of two freshmen named to the first team, along with Johns Hopkins’ Meagan Donohoe also garnering the honor. Harvey and Donohoe became just the eighth and ninth freshmen to receive first team recognition. Harvey also was named American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Mid-Atlantic Region Freshman of the Year. Harvey also landed on the All-Region First Team, which assures her All-America consideration. The Freshman of the Year honor is the first in program history.
WRESTLING
Mark Rappo (Council Rock South) lost a 10-5 decision in Bloomsburg’s 39-3 loss to defending NCAA Division I champion Penn State on Sunday. Rappo dropped a 3-0 decision at 141 to Franklin & Marshall’s Richard Durso at last weekend’s Terrapin Duals at the University of Maryland.
Ursinus freshman Nick Dimuzio (Upper Dublin) fell in the consolation bracket at the Messiah Wrestling Invitational on Saturday.
Penn State’s James Vollrath (Council Rock South) earned a 6-1 decision over Nick Fisher in the championship at 157 in Saturday’s 45th annual East Stroudsburg Open.
