MEN’S BASKETBALL
Senior Brian Oleksiak (Abington) hit a pair of free throws down the stretch to help propel Shippensburg to a 61-53 win over Lock Haven on Sunday. Oleksiak finished the game with seven points.
Senior Robby Pines (Souderton) is one of three returning veteran in East Stroudsburg’s backcourt this season. Last season, the veteran point guard was sixth in Division II with a 3.0 assist-to-turnover ratio. He started three games but was often on the floor at the end. Sixteen of the Warriors’ 27 games were decided by five points or less. Freshman Matt Labick (Plymouth Whitemarsh) will compete for playing time at guard.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Sophomore center Casey Pritz (Abington) is one of three returning starters for Widener’s basketball team this year. Last year, she was named Rookie of the Year in the Commonwealth Conference. She closed the year 14th in the conference in scoring with 10.9 points a game, third in rebounds with 7.8 per contest, second with a .545 field goal percentage, second with 48 blocks and third with 3.11 offensive rebounds per game. Widener is picked to finish second in the pre-season poll.
Ashley Gale (Cheltenham) scored 15 points after halftime in LaSalle’s come-from-behind 77-73 win in overtime over Long Island on Sunday night. The Explorers trailed by as many as 20 in the first half and still trailed 38-22 at halftime. Gale, who had three steals in the game, came up with her biggest with less than a minute remaining when she stole an inbounds pass and went in for a layup to put the Explorers on top 62-60 with 57 ticks left. Gale finished the night with 19 points and three assists. On Friday, Antonia Gale (Cheltenham) had 11 points and four rebounds in LaSalle’s 69-55 loss to Loyola (Md.). Ashley Gale had five points.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Sophomore Tyler Jones (Central Bucks West) earned All-Region honors as he led the LaSalle cross country team at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional meet at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore on Saturday. The LaSalle men finished fifth in the region, bettering their most recent Mid-Atlantic ranking of No. 8. They topped Princeton, American and Bucknell to surpass those three squads in the regional standings and were just two points shy of regional number four Navy. Jones ran to 15th place individually out of 197 runners as he was the first Explorer to cross the finish line. He clocked a 32.30 on the Nor’easter soaked 10K course to earn the first all-region honors of his career. Runners who finish in the top 25 are designated all-region.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Temple sophomore Rebecca Mims (Upper Dublin) finished 98th while sophomore Karrie Finn (Council Rock North) finished 178th in the Owls’ 24th place finish in the NCAA Regional Championships on Saturday at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. It was the Regionals debut for the women’s team.
FIELD HOCKEY
Junior Katie O’Donnell (Wissahickon) scored a goal in Maryland’s 5-0 win over Drexel on Sunday. The win vaulted the top-ranked Terrapins into the NCAA Final Four where they will face Princeton in a semifinal game on Friday. On Saturday, O’Donnell broke the University of Maryland’s single season points record of 74 with her two-goal, three-assist performance in the Terps’ 6-1 rout of American. O’Donnell’s big performance gave her 76 points for the season. She also tied the Maryland and ACC record for career assists with 71, and she became Maryland’s career points leader earlier this year.
In Drexel’s loss to Maryland, freshman goalie Jenna Phillips (Hatboro-Horsham) turned away 16 shots in a standout effort. Megan Keller (Hatboro-Horsham) and Amanda Fleischut (Central Bucks West) also saw action for Drexel, which won the Colonial Athletic Conference title and earned its first ever NCAA Tournament berth. Drexel picked up its first NCAA Tournament victory with its 3-2 win over the University of Connecticut in an opening round game. The team’s 19 wins breaks last year’s record of 16 wins.
Rider freshman Marlaine Schneider (Neshaminy) was named Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year. A five-time NEC Rookie of the Week honoree, Schneider led all freshmen in the conference in points (18). She scored six goals and contributed six assists while starting all 18 games for the Broncs. Schneider also earned Second Team All-NEC honors. Rider closed out its regular season with a 17-1 record and an 8-0 record in conference play.
Susquehanna University freshman Ally Bradley (Central Bucks South) was named Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year. The freshman midfielder also earned a spot on the all-conference first team. Bradley scored seven goals and also contributed a team-high seven assists for 21 points. Three of her goals were game winners, including two in overtime. She converted Susquehanna’s lone penalty stroke as well. Susquehanna qualified for the Landmark championships for the second year in a row, which included a runner-up finish this year. After starting the year 2-7, the Crusaders won eight of their last 10 games to finish 10-9.
Lebanon Valley freshman Caitlin Vasey (Central Bucks East) was named the Rookie of the Year in the Commonwealth Conference. She enjoyed a remarkable season after moving into the starting lineup in midseason, contributing 13 goals and 14 assists. She tied a Lebanon Valley record with four assists against Widener. Vasey was named ECAC Division III South Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 3. In two games, she contributed three goals and five assists. It was her second selection as Player of the Week. Senior defender Danielle Blase (William Tennent) was named to the Commonwealth Conference’s first team.
Vasey scored a pair of goals in Lebanon Valley’s 9-0 win over Wittenberg on Wednesday. She scored a goal in Lebanon Valley’s 3-0 win over Rowan in the second round of the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship Tournament on Saturday.
Messiah senior Brittany Godshall (Souderton) was named to the Commonwealth Conference’s second team defense.
Nicole Tourdot (Wissahickon) started all 19 games for a Gwynedd Mercy College squad that closed out its season with an 11-8 record. She contributed three goals and three assists.
Three SOL alums were in the starting lineup for Bloomsburg in Sunday’s 3-2 win over UMass-Lowell in the 2009 NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championship game. The title was the fourth straight for the Huskies and 16th overall. Senior Caitlin Koczynski (Neshaminy) had three saves in goal. Breanne Tobin (Pennridge) and Julie Rush (Quakertown) started on the forward line. Koczynski had eight saves in Bloomsburg’s 4-2 win over Shippensburg in the semifinals on Friday.
Lauren Hollingsworth (Council Rock South) was one of seven seniors who played their final game for Shippensburg in Friday’s loss to Bloomsburg. She was one of the team’s leading defenders over the last two seasons, making 52 starts over the course of her career while appearing in 73 games. This season she made one defensive save while helping the defense hold opponents to 16 goals in 22 games. Hollingsworth scored her first career goal this season against C.W. Post and totaled four assists during her career.
FOOTBALL
East Stroudsburg junior Matt Freed (Souderton) was named to the All-PSAC East first team. Freed, a second team selection last year, followed up an All-American season as a redshirt sophomore with an even better junior year. He finished the regular season with five fewer tackles (121) but had four more tackles for a loss (15) and two more sacks (8) while posting two of the top defensive games in Division II. His 14 solo tackles (16 total) at Kutztown are tied for the most in the nation, and his 20 total tackles (13 solo) against Slippery Rock, which included 4.0 TFL and 2.0 sacks, are tied for fourth.
Redshirt sophomore Shawnte Carroll (Harry S. Truman) has been named East Stroudsburg’s Championship Award Guys Athlete of the Week for his record-setting performance in the Warriors’ 54-28 win over Slippery Rock last Saturday. He set a school record with four interceptions and tied an NCAA Division II record with three interceptions in the fourth quarter as ESU finished the regular season with an 8-3 record.
West Chester wide receiver Steve Miller (Pennsbury) earned first team All-PSAC East honors after receiving second team honors last year. He led all receivers at West Chester with 46 catches for 759 yards. He was tied for the team lead with nine touchdowns and averaged 16.5 yards per catch. Senior CB/return specialist Kevin Garland (Hatboro-Horsham) was selected as the Eastern Division first team return specialist. Garland led the nation in punt return yards per game with an average of 20.57 per return. He returned 14 punts on the year for 288 yards and a long of 52 yards. Doubling as the team’s starting cornerback, Garland picked off a team-high three passes for 129 yards and returned one of those 61 yards for a touchdown.
Lock Haven junior Nick Gounaris (Pennsbury) received second team All-PSAC West honors. The senior defensive lineman finished the year with 47 total tackles, which was fifth best on the team. He made 25 solo stops and had six tackles for a loss, which ranked second best on the team. He also had two sacks. Two of his best performances came against PSAC West opponents – he collected a game-high 11 and eight tackles against Clarion and Edinboro respectively.
Chad Peterman (Upper Moreland) had five receptions for a total of 35 yards in Delaware Valley’s 28-16 win over Widener on Saturday.
MEN’S SOCCER
Freshman Ryan E. Jones (Council Rock South) was one of four Marywood University soccer players to earn year-end honors in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. He became the first Marywood men’s player to be named first team all-conference in the program’s history.  Jones was named to the first team squad after an outstanding rookie season in which he led Marywood in assists with five, including two on game-winning goals. He was second on the squad in points (9) from his outside back position. He also scored two goals. Jones helped anchor a Pacers’ defense that averaged less than a goal against per game and posted five shutouts. Jones was the only freshman named to this year’s all-conference squad. Junior defender Dan Wasser (Souderton) saw action in all 17 games for Marywood and started 15 while junior Chris Rodzewich (Souderton) played in all 17 games and started 12.
Sophomore Chris Lebo (Souderton) saw action in 11 games for a University of North Carolina squad that was ranked second in the nation. The Tar Heels were upset by North Carolina State in penalty kicks (4-1) in the ACC quarterfinals on Wednesday. The Tar Heels are 13-2-3 and will await word on an NCAA bid on Monday.
Bloomsburg junior Tim Pfender (Neshaminy) earned first team All-PSAC East honors for the third time in his career after anchoring a Huskies defense that allowed just 1.17 goals per game and limited opponents to just 15 shots per game. Pfender assisted on a goal in Bloomsburg’s win over Shippensburg.
Senior Mike Luecke (Souderton) earned All-PSAC honors. The California University of Pennsylvania forward led the team in scoring and finished second in the PSAC this season with 32 points on 13 goals and six assists. A three-year starter, he also ranks among the league leaders in goals, assists and shots. Luecke finished his career as one of the premier offensive players in Cal U history as he registered 125 points on 52 goals and 21 assists.
Junior Kenton Burckhart (Souderton) has started 18 of 19 games for a Geneva squad that boasts a 15-4 record and will face Roberts Wesleyan in Friday’s NCAA East Region. Burckhart has contributed five assists.
Tim Allan (Souderton) was the captain of his Plymouth State University squad that advanced to the ECAC post-season where it fell to Daniel Webster. The senior defensive back was named to ESPN The Magazine’s Regional All-Academic second team.
Senior Blake Ritchey (Souderton) was captain of a Moravian squad that was 4-11-2. He scored four goals.
Seton Hill junior Doug Schmitt (Souderton) received honorable mention All-WVIAC honors. Schmitt scored a pair of goals and added an assist this season.
Freshman Craig Heckman (Souderton) saw action in eight games for a Gettysburg squad that closed out its season with an 8-7-2 record.
Freshman Seth Mangum (Souderton) saw action in 17 games for a Philadelphia Biblical University squad that was 7-11-2 this season.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Bloomsburg senior Kelly Modes (Neshaminy) was named the 2009 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Player of the Year. She was named first team All-PSAC East for the fourth consecutive season after leading the Huskies in scoring with seven goals and three assists in 19 games this season. She scored two goals against East Stroudsburg this season and netted the game-winning goal against West Chester. Modes finished her career at Bloomsburg in 10th place all-time in school history in goals scored with 21. She also was named the PSAC East Player of the Week twice this season. Teammate Samantha Fox (William Tennent) received second team All-PSAC East honors. The freshman midfielder finished second on the team in scoring with four goals and two assists. She scored a career-high two goals in a win over Charleston College earlier this year.
Shippensburg senior Gayle Kuntzmann (Hatboro-Horsham) was named to the first team All-PSAC Eastern Division squad. It was her second selection to the first team. Kuntzmann finished her career second in school history for career goals and is the only player in the last four years to appear in all 78 of Shippensburg’s games. During her career, Kuntzmann scored 46 goals and contributed 18 assists for 110 career points. She made 66 starts and, in addition to earning first team honors last season, was named to the second team as a sophomore after earning PSAC East Rookie of the Year honors in 2006.
Freshman defensive back Julia Goldsworthy (Central Bucks South) played in 22 of 23 games for a Virginia Tech squad that finished fourth in the tough ACC, trailing only UNC, Florida State and Boston College. Midway through the season, Goldsworthy earned the starting nod at left defender.  The Hokies, ranked 14th in the nation, notched their first ever NCAA Tournament win in program history with Friday’s 2-0 win over Murray State. Tech followed that with a 3-1 win over No. 23 Dayton on Sunday to advance to the Sweet 16 where the Hokies will face second-seeded Portland.
Sophomore Eva Gimello (Neshaminy) contributed an assist in The College of New Jersey’s 3-0 win over William Patterson University last Tuesday in the semifinals of the NJAC. TCNJ won the title by downing Richard Stockton last Friday in penalty kicks (7-6) following a scoreless tie.
Sophomore midfielder Devon Miniscalco (Council Rock South) was named to the second team All-PSAC East. She led the Warriors with 12 goals and had three assists after moving to the midfield from back, where she started all 22 games a year ago. She scored her first career goal in the season opener and found the net in 10 of ESU’s 20 games. Miniscalco had a pair of two-goal games and scored four goals in the final six games of the season, including the game-winner in overtime to send ESU into the PSAC playoffs with a 2-1 win at Bloomsburg. She scored her team’s only goal in a 4-1 loss to Kutztown in the conference quarterfinals.
Freshman Shannon Zickler is a member of a University of Maryland squad that reached the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament this past weekend, posting a 4-0 win over Monmouth and following that with a 1-0 win over Washington State. The number four-seeded Terps will meet top-seeded North Carolina on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the right to move on and play the Wake Forest/South Carolina winner in the Elite Eight. Seven ACC teams have made the Sweet 16 this year. Although Zickler has been an understudy to All-ACC senior keeper Mary Casey, she has enjoyed the experience and learned a great deal about goalkeeping this season.
MEN’S SWIMMING
Freshman Adam Bossert (Wissahickon) was named Liberty League co-swimmer of the Week after finishing first in three events - two individual and one relay - while helping Rochester to its first win of the season (152-146 at Union). Bossert won the 100 freestyle, finishing in 49.47. He also won the 50 free. He capped the day by swimming the final leg for Rochester's 400 yard freestyle relay, swimming his leg in 48.54, the fastest time in the field. With the win, the Yellowjackets earned 11 points in the final event of the day, which propelled them to a narrow six-point win over the Dutchmen.
Junior Jesse Bregman (Springfield) took top honors in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.24 in Widener’s 135-43 Middle Atlantic Conference win at FDU-Florham on Saturday. Sophomore Sean Corcoran (Pennsbury) won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.69 seconds.
Jeremy Frey (Central Bucks East) had three individual first place finishes for Bloomsburg in the Huskies’ 179-83 win over Ithaca College on Saturday. He posted victories in the 200 free (1:47.77), the 200 back (2:01.29) and the 200 IM (2:02.67). Teammate Tim Dorsch (Souderton) took first in the 200 breast (2:18.18) and 100 breast (1:01.86). Ben Safran (Central Bucks West) finished first in the 200 fly (2:01.51).
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Freshman Megan Lafferty (Upper Dublin) was part of the University of Maryland’s winning 200 medley relay and 400 free relay in the Terps’ sweep of UMBC (217-83) and Towson (184.5-115.5) on Saturday. Lafferty also finished in a tie for first in the 50 free.
Freshman Paige Whitmire (Souderton) was part of the winning 400 medley and 400 free relay teams in Penn State’s sweep of Colgate (92-21) and West Virginia (74-39). She finished second in the 50 free with a time of 23.90. In Penn State’s 160-140 loss to Virginia, Whitmire was part of the winning 200 and 400 medley relay teams. She finished fifth in the 100 free.
Amy Rowland (Upper Moreland) finished second in the 100 back and fourth in the 200 back in East Stroudsburg’s 151-98 win over Mansfield on Saturday. Sam Hoch (Norristown) finished fourth in the 200 butterfly as well as the 500 free.
Julie DeVincent (Upper Dublin) was part of Bloomsburg’s winning 400 free relay (3:41.13) in the Huskies’ 140.5-121.5 win over Ithaca on Saturday. Madeline Barlow (Pennsbury) was a three-time winner, taking first in the 200 IM (2:12.93), the 200 back (2:11.94) and 100 back (1:02.06).
MEN’S TENNIS
Junior Carson Richter (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was 9-4 at number four singles for Chestnut Hill this fall.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Christina Laury (Hatboro-Horsham) led Lock Haven with 11 digs in the Lady Eagles 3-0 win over West Chester in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament on Tuesday (25-22, 25-16, 25-11).
WRESTLING
Shippensburg redshirt senior Nate Nauroth (Quakertown) recorded a pin in his finals match to win the 141-pound title on Saturday at the Washington and Jefferson Open. Nauroth recorded five victories, including four by fall. He opened with a 55-second pin of West Liberty State’s Nick Taylor and then pinned Shippensburg teammate Josh Bathras in 63 seconds to advance to the quarterfinals. Facing UPJ’s Mitch Spencer, Nauroth recorded his third consecutive pin with a victory by fall in 3:40. In the semifinals, he earned a 5-2 decision over freshman Cody Myers. In his fifth and final match, Nauroth capped off his superb performance by pinning UPJ’s Adam Whetstone in 1:59 for the 141-pound title.
