MEN’S BASKETBALL
Sophomore Jim Connolly (Souderton) helped Philadelphia University erase an 11-point deficit in Sunday’s 67-64 win over Millersville, finishing with a game-high 27 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field and 8-of-9 shooting from the free throw line. Freshman Nick Christian (Bensalem) added 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. In Tuesday night’s 52-49 loss to West Chester, Connolly and Christian each had seven points.
Senior Lavoy Allen (Pennsbury) contributed 10 points and seven rebounds and sophomore Khalif Wyatt (Norristown) added nine points in Temple’s 54-51 loss to Texas A&M in the fifth place game at the Old Spice Classic on Sunday. Wyatt scored a career-high 10 points in Temple’s 65-58 win over Georgia in Friday night’s consolation round game. In Temple’s opening round 57-50 loss to California on Thursday, Allen had 13 points and six rebounds while Wyatt added seven points on three-of-four shooting.
Freshman A.J. Picard (Souderton) notched the first double-figure scoring game of his young career with 10 points and a team-high three steals in Goldey-Beacom’s 76-64 loss to Kutztown on Tuesday night.
Senior Chris McDevitt (Central Bucks West) scored 10 points in Widener’s 77-72 win over Richard Stockton on Tuesday.
Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown) scored 11 points in Bloomsburg’s 51-49 loss to the University of the Sciences on Tuesday night. Teammate Ronnie Benson (Souderton) added two points.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Lock Haven freshman Kelsey Ryan (Neshaminy)was named the PSAC West Freshman of the Week for the first week of the season. Ryan made her Lady Eagle debut a solid one as she pulled down seven rebounds to go along with four points in Lock Haven’s 64-59 win over Post University. Five of her seven rebounds came on the defensive side of the court. She also had one steal.
Sophomore guard Ashley Rosario (Harry S. Truman) scored 10 points in Goldey-Beacom’s 76-64 loss to the University of South Carolina Aiken in Friday’s opening game of the Thanksgiving Classic hosted by the University of West Florida.
Mashira Newman (Upper Dublin) scored seven points in Millersville’s 61-51 upset win over No. 4 and previously undefeated Holy Family on Tuesday night. Lindsey Tennett (Pennridge) scored nine points for Holy Family. Millersville entered the USA Today/ESPN Division II Top-25 Coaches’ Poll on Tuesday with a number 19 ranking.
Senior Ashley Gale (Cheltenham) scored a game-high 17 points in La Salle’s 59-48 loss to Delaware on Sunday. Gale now has 16 three-point baskets this season, one shy of the top spot in the A-10. She has two games in which she has hit at least five, tying for the most in the league. In Monday’s 87-67 win over Oral Roberts, Gale led the Explorers with 22 points. In last Friday’s 50-46 loss to 13th-ranked Georgetown, Gale scored a game-high 18 points, which included five three-point baskets.
Sophomore Danielle Derr (Upper Dublin) scored four points in Bloomsburg’s 69-62 win over the University of the Sciences on Tuesday night.
Senior captain Addie Micir (Council Rock North) scored a season-high 20 points in Princeton’s 74-68 loss to No. 22/24 Vanderbilt in the championship game of the Vanderbilt Tournament on Sunday. Micir, who earned a spot on the All-Tournament team, matched her career-high by burying six three-pointers. In Friday night’s opening round, Micir hit a pair of free throws with five seconds left to give Princeton a 60-59 win over USC. She finished with 10 points.
Senior Kathryn Stockbower (Upper Dublin) contributed 20 points and a game-high 14 rebounds in Swarthmore’s 63-49 win over Dickinson on Tuesday night. Teammate Madeline Ross (Central Bucks East) added three points and three rebounds.
Senior Liz Leer (Abington) recorded her third double-double of the young season with 12 points and 10 rebounds in American’s 73-59 loss to Sam Houston State on Friday night in the World Vision Classic in Lubbock, Texas.
Sophomore Mercedes Harris (Norristown) scored a game-high 25 points and also pulled down nine rebounds in Montgomery County Community College's 63-49 win over defending EPCC champion Lehigh Carbon Community College on Tuesday night. The Mustangs are 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the EPCC.
FIELD HOCKEY
Bloomsburg senior Julia Rush (Quakertown) was named to the PSAC Eastern Division first team. The senior midfielder has helped to limit opponents to just 6.7 shots on goal per game. She also has contributed offensively for the Huskies with one goal.
East Stroudsburg senior midfield Brittany Kocis (Central Bucks East) was named to the PSAC East first team. She is the third member of her family to be named to the All-PSAC field hockey team for the Warriors, following her sisters Nicole (2004) and Ashley (2004, 2006). She tied ESU’s school record with 14 assists this year and added seven goals to finish her career with 22 goals and 22 assists. Brittany, Nicole and Ashley combined for 82 goals and 49 assists for the Warriors since Nicole’s first year in 2001.
Bloomsburg downed East Stroudsburg 5-2 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Tuesday. Kocis contributed an assist for ESU. Four SOL alums – Julia Rush (Quakertown), Brieann Wolfe (Pennridge ), Madison Schoch (Quakertown) and Samantha Facciolla (Council Rock South) - are members of a Bloomsburg squad that will travel to Louisville this week for the NCAA Division II Sports Festival where the Huskies will face top-seeded Shippensburg, which had a first round bye.
FOOTBALL
East Stroudsburg’s Matt Freed (Souderton) has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American first team for the second straight season, it was announced on Tuesday. He is the first ESU football player to earn two Academic All-America honors and just the second student-athlete in school history with two selections on an Academic All-American first team. Freed, a history major with a 3.74 GPA, is one of five repeat selections on the first team. He finished his senior season with 120 tackles, 14 tackles for a loss and 7.5 sacks, giving him 399 tackles, 45 TFL and 22.5 sacks in his career as a three-year starter. He is third in ESU history in career tackles and had double-figure tackles in 24 of his 34 starts, including eight times as a senior. He was the only defensive player among the 24 candidates for the Harlon Hill Award, given to the top player in Division II football, and is one of the top athletes and student-athletes in the country.
MEN’S SWIMMING
Freshman Lloyd Tannenbaum (Upper Dublin) finished first in the 200 free with a time of 1:50.75 in Ursinus College’s 106-88 win over Centennial on Saturday, Nov. 13. He also won the 100 free with a time of 49.82.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Shippensburg freshman Colleen Stiles (North Penn) achieved a NCAA ‘B’ cut time in the mile at last Sunday’s George Mason Patriot Invitational with a time of 17:34.48. Teammate Alyssa Boeggemann (Neshaminy) was part of the 400 free relay that finished 13th with a time of 3:39.66.
