MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
La Salle senior Nick Crits (Wissahickon) finished sixth with a time of 24:38 in the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championships on Saturday. Crits earned a spot on the all-conference team. The Explorers captured the team championship, which was held at Frank Liske Park in Charlotte, N.C.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
University of Maryland junior Julie Fricke (Council Rock North) finished 13th to lead the women’s team to a ninth place finish at the ACC Championships. By placing in the top 14, Fricke earned All-ACC status. It marks the first time since 1995 the Terps placed a runner in the top 14, and Fricke is the eighth Terrapin all time to be honored.
Martina Drew (Neshaminy) finished 88th with a time of 25:20 in Bloomsburg’s third place finish at the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Championships on Saturday. As a team, the Huskies – who earned a trip to the NCAA Championships – finished with 134 points with Shippensburg winning the team competition with 50 points. Lock Haven was second with 108 points.
Millersville’s Michelle Blum (Central Bucks East) finished in 77th place with a time of 24.54 while teammate Megan Meyer (Central Bucks South) finished in 97th place with a time of 25:36 in Saturday’s NCAA Atlantic Regional in Slippery Rock. The Marauders finished 13th.
West Chester’s Kim McManus (Plymouth Whitemarsh) finished 56th with a time of 24:21 in Saturday’s 2011 NCAA East Regionals at Slippery Rock. The Golden Rams were without their number one runner, Kristina Koutsouros (Cheltenham).
Kutztown’s Carolyn Fergus (North Penn) finished in 76th place with a time of 24:56 at Saturday’s NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional at Slippery Rock. Kutztown finished ninth.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Sophomore Sarah Kiely (Council Rock North) scored 14 points in American University’s 90-74 win over UDC in an exhibition game on Thursday.
FIELD HOCKEY
Scranton University senior Gretchen Kempf (Central Bucks South) was named the Landmark Conference’s 2011 Offensive Player of the Year. Kempf led the Landmark Conference in goals and total points, finishing the year with 16 goals and 34 total points. The 16 goals are the fifth highest single-season total in Scranton history while the 34 points are the eighth highest single-season total in school history. She now has 26 career goals, which are eighth most in school history. Kempf, a second team all-conference selection as a freshman, was named to the all-conference first team.
Drexel junior Amanda Fleischut (Central Bucks West) received First Team All-Colonial Athletic Association honors. Fleischut led the team with nine goals, including three game-winning goals, and total points with 21. The junior standout recorded her first career hat trick in the season-opening win over Saint Joseph’s. She currently ranks fourth in the CAA in shots, shots per game, tied for fourth in game-winning goals, and tied for sixth in goals and goals per game. Fleischut was also recognized by the conference her freshman year and was named to the All-Rookie team. Fleischut scored a goal in Drexel’s 4-3 loss to Hofstra on Sunday.
Sophomore Lauren Purvis (Hatboro-Horsham) earned second team All-Big Ten honors. Purvis, a steady contributor in the midfield, has scored 12 points on five goals and two assists.
Penn State advanced to the Big Ten Championship game with a 1-0 win over Ohio State. The Nittany Lions defeated Michigan 3-2 in Sunday’s title game to capture their first Big Ten Tournament title since 1998. Senior Casey McCartin (Hatboro-Horsham) is a starting forward for the Nittany Lions.
La Salle junior Becca Chylack (Souderton) was named to the All-Atlantic 10 second team. It is the third straight season she has earned all-conference honors. The junior earned first team honors as a freshman and was named to the second team the past two seasons. In 2011, the defensive midfielder scored four goals and had three assists for 11 points. She ranks seventh all-time in La Salle in career points (54) and is tenth all-time in goals (21). Chylack also earned a spot on the Academic All-Atlantic 10 team for the second straight year. She has a 3.92 GPA as a nursing major.
IUP freshman Casey McGowan (Central Bucks South) was named the 2011 PSAC West Freshman of the Year and received second team honors after anchoring an IUP defense that was one of the best in the conference all season. As a team, the Crimson Hawks’ defense allowed just 2.69 goals per game, and McGowan also chipped in on offense with an assist.
Cabrini junior Taylor McGarvey (Plymouth Whitemarsh) earned 2011 All-CSAC second team honors.
Christina Maida (Central Bucks East) made four saves to earn the shutout in Princeton’s 3-0 win over Penn on Friday. With the win, the Tigers clinched their seventh straight Ivy League title.
Rider junior Marlaine Schneider (Pennsbury) received second team All-NEC honors. A 56-game veteran and the 2009 NEC Rookie of the Year, Schneider leads the conference in assists with 17 and enters the playoffs 13th on Rider’s all-time scoring list. Schneider is ranked second nationally in assists per game.
Schneider scored her 16th goal of the season in Rider’s 2-1 win over Monmouth University in Saturday’s NEC title game. The Broncs will play Ivy League champion Princeton on Nov. 8 with the winner earning a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
Villanova senior Megan Goelz (Pennsbury) was named a Big East Academic All-Star. To be recognized, players have to maintain a 3.0 GPA or better. The Wildcats saw their season come to an end when they lost to Syracuse 3-0 in the Big East semifinals on Friday.
Senior goalkeeper Jill Lukens (Central Bucks East) had six saves in 12th-ranked Ursinus College’s 2-0 win over Johns Hopkins in Saturday’s semifinals of the 2011 Centennial Conference Championship. Ursinus defeated F&M 2-1 
in Sunday’s championship final.
Gwynedd-Mercy senior Casey Dellostretto (Upper Moreland), junior Erin Gorenflo (Plymouth Whitemarsh) and sophomore Maria Karidas (Council Rock South) were named to the first team 2011 Colonial States Athletic All-Conference squad. Dellostretto earned her third straight all-league nod. Karidas was honored for the second year in a row. Karidas is first in the 
CSAC in scoring while Dellostretto (13 goals/six assists) is also in the top ten. Gorenflo leads the squad in assists with nine. Gorenflo was also selected to the CSAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
Karidas scored her 20th goal of the season and also contributed an assist in Gwynedd’s 3-0 win over Cabrini in Saturday’s CSAC championship game. In Wednesday’s 3-1 semifinal win over Immaculata, Karidas also contributed a goal and assist. Gwynedd will face Amherst in Wednesday’s NCAA opening round.
FOOTBALL
Senior linebacker Mike Bergey (Souderton) had a career-high 15 tackles in East Stroudsburg’s 44-14 loss to Shippensburg on Saturday. Teammate Shawnte Carroll (Harry S. Truman) had his first interception of the season and sixth of his career. Shippensburg sophomore defensive end Jake Metz (Souderton) had a share of one of two sacks by the Raiders.
Freshman Craig Needhammer (North Penn) had nine carries for 27 yards in Lycoming’s 28-21 loss to ninth-ranked Delaware Valley on Saturday. Freshman John Sibel (Pennsbury) had one reception for 13 yards.
Junior quarterback Kevin Morton (Abington) threw for 302 yards with four TD strikes on 21-for-34 passing in Kutztown’s 52-14 win over Bloomsburg on Saturday. Rob Kee (Central Bucks South) is part of KU’s offensive line that has protected Morton all season and is currently ranked sixth in the PSAC in sacks allowed per game (2.00). Alex DiNolfi (Norristown) made his conference-leading eighth interception of the season. He is also creeping up on the KU single season record of 10 that was set in 1976. Brett Moss (Bensalem) chipped in with seven tackles. Josh Mastromatto (Upper Dublin) sealed the win with an 83-yard kickoff return for a 
touchdown that put KU up 45-14. It was the second kickoff return of the season for Mastromatto, who also hauled in eight passes for 66 yards. The win allowed the Golden Bears to earn a share of the PSAC East title and the division’s top seed. It was KU’s first win over Bloomsburg since 1992 and second division title in the 96-year history of the program. As a result, KU will host PSAC West champion Slippery Rock for the PSAC title on Nov. 12. A win would give KU its first ever PSAC title and would likely ensure the program’s second straight berth to the NCAA playoffs. For the Huskies, Ryan Dickerson (Souderton) came up with his fourth touchdown reception of the season, hauling in a 14-yard TD pass. He finished the game with three receptions for 38 yards.
For his performance in KU’s 52-14 win over Bloomsburg on Saturday, Morton was named the PSAC Eastern Division Offensive Athlete of the Week. A Harlon Hill nominee, Morton led KU to one of its greatest wins in school history. In addition to throwing for 302 yards and four touchdowns, Morton also rushed for 60 yards and a score. He has now thrown 140 pass attempts, spanning over five games, without an interception. The junior QB is the PSAC’s most efficient passer entering the conference championship game next weekend (164.6). Morton is third in the PSAC in total offense (280.4) and passing yards (262.0). Kutztown is ranked 13th in the American Football Coaches Association and ninth in Super Region I. Morton is currently second in KU history with 84 touchdown passes and 8,174 passing yards. He is also second in completions with 623. He is 14th in the PSAC history in career passing yardage. He has thrown for 2,620 yards this season. During his time at KU, Morton has thrown for at least two TDs in 23 of Kutztown’s last 27 games. With Morton under center, Kutztown has scored 907 points in its last 23 games (39.43/game). Additionally, Kutztown has scored 30 or more points 22 times since Morton made his first start against West Chester in Week 4 of 2009.

Sean Peckham (Central Bucks East) contributed a pair of assists in Lafayette’s 2-0 win over Bucknell on Saturday.
Anthony Manero (Council Rock North) connected on a penalty kick that gave Bloomsburg a 1-1 (7-6 PKs) win over top-seeded Lock Haven in Wednesday night’s PSAC semifinal game. Manero is a familiar foe for the Bald Eagles – he scored a goal in their first meeting and now bounced them from the playoffs. The win propelled the Huskies into the championship game. Coach Paul Payne credited John Owens (Central Bucks East) for his quiet leadership to the team. The Huskies fell to second-seeded Millersville 1-0 in Saturday’s title game.
Freshman Christopher Davis (North Penn) contributed an assist in Millersville’s 4-0 win over No. 8 California (Pa.) on Wednesday.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Junior Ashley McKenna (Central Bucks South) represented East Stroudsburg University on the Capital One Academic All-District team for NCAA Division II soccer. McKenna is a biology major with a 3.85 GPA, and she gives ESU a selection on the women’s soccer Academic All-District team for the fourth straight season. She was selected at back, where she started 14 games before moving to forward for the final four games of the season. She had three goals and two assists, scoring all three goals in the last four games and has made 44 career starts through her junior year.
Jamie Vaniver (Council Rock South) tallied her third goal of the season in Bloomsburg’s 3-1 loss to nationally ranked California (Pa.) in the quarterfinals of the PSAC playoffs on Tuesday.
Dana Moyer (Souderton) scored her first goal of the season in Lafayette’s 3-2 loss to Navy in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals on Friday.
Temple goalkeeper Tara Murphy (Council Rock South) was recognized by the Atlantic 10 Conference for her effort during the final weekend of the season. After helping the Owls go undefeated and unscored upon in the team’s final two games, Murphy was selected as one of the conference’s Co-Players of the Week. Murphy was perfect in goal in games against Duquesne and St. Bonaventure.
Maddy Evans (Abington) contributed a goal and assist in Penn State’s 3-1 win over Minnesota in Friday night’s Big Ten Tournament semifinal.
MEN’S SWIMMING
Jeremy Frey (Central Bucks East) set a Decker Pool record in the 200-free (1:49.26) in Bloomsburg’s 136-121 loss to Edinboro in a meet held at Mansfield University on Saturday. Teammate Nick Ortlieb (North Penn) set a pool record in the 100 breast with a time of 1:02.48, and Tim Dorsch (Souderton) established a new pool record in the 200 breast with a mark of 2:17.12. Frey and Mark DiLemmo (Central Bucks East) are the lone Bloomsburg swimmers to achieve PSAC qualifying times.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Melissa Smith (Pennsbury) finished fourth in the 500 free (5:40.49), fifth in the 1000 free (2:08.84) and was part of East Stroudsburg’s fifth place 200 medley relay team (2:04.82) in the Warriors’ 159-101 dual loss to Lock Haven on Saturday.
Junior Paige Whitmire (Souderton) was part of the 200 freestyle relay team that finished first with a time of 1:34.23 in Penn State’s 138.5-99.5 loss to Auburn on Friday night.
Megan Lafferty (Upper Dublin) finished first in the 50 free with a time of 23:30 in Maryland’s 178-121 loss to UNC on Saturday. Lafferty finished second in the 100 fly (55.56) and was part of the Terps’ winning 400 free relay (3:26.13). The loss was the first of the season for Maryland.
Kasey Blesh (Neshaminy) hit the PSAC mark in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:59.15 in Lock Haven’s 159-101 win over East Stroudsburg on Saturday.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Liz DiValerio (Upper Merion) had a team-high eight kills along with an impressive .439 hitting percentage in Kutztown’s 3-0 win over Cheyney University on Friday. She has 81 kills on the season. Kutztown is ranked eighth in the latest Atlantic Region rankings released by the NCAA.
Freshman Devon Maugle (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had a team-high 14 kills in UConn’s 3-1 win over West Virginia on Friday night. It was her sixth straight game in double figures to go along with seven digs. The win was the third straight for the Huskies, who remain in the Big East playoff hunt. On Sunday, Maugle had a team-high 14 kills and 10 digs in UConn’s 3-1 loss to Pitt. It was her third double-double of the season.
Freshman Julie Harvey (Hatboro-Horsham) had a team-high 16 kills in Franklin and Marshall’s 3-2 loss to Gettysburg in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference Tournament on Friday.
