MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Brandon Pomerantz (Council Rock North) earned All-Region status after finishing fifth in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Championships on Saturday. The Lock Haven harrier finished with a time of 31:35. The No. 12 Bald Eagles finished third overall.
Junior Sean Stetler (Central Bucks South) finished 16th with a time of 32:21 on Saturday as Shippensburg won its first NCAA Atlantic Region championship in program history. Stetler fell one place shy of becoming Shippensburg’s sixth all-region runner. His run featured an average split of 5:13, and his performance was 14 spots better than any other No. 6 runner in the meet.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Sophomore Sarah Simonetti (Pennridge) placed fifth overall (22:52) in the women’s 6K on Sunday at the NCAA D II East Regional Cross Country Championship to become the first-ever Philadelphia University runner to earn a spot in the DII NCAA Cross Country National Championships at Southern Indiana University on Nov. 21.
Andrea Kellock (North Penn) finished in ninth place with a time of 21:56 in Saturday’s NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Championships on Saturday. For her strong showing, the Bloomsburg senior earned all-region honors for the 2009 season. Bloomsburg placed third and qualified for the NCAA Championships on Nov. 21.
FIELD HOCKEY
Junior Katie O’Donnell (Wissahickon) contributed a goal in the University of Maryland’s come-from-behind 3-2 overtime win over Virginia on Sunday afternoon. The Terrapins rallied from a two-goal deficit to knot the score. The junior forward was named MVP of the tournament. The title was the eighth ACC Tournament championship and first back-to-back for the Terps since 2001. On Friday, O’Donnell had a pair of assists in Maryland’s 3-2 win over Wake Forest.
Freshman Adelle Lever (Wissahickon) started all 20 games this season for a Michigan State squad that closed out its regular season with a 17-3 mark. The Spartans defeated No. 18 Indiana 3-2 in Sunday’s Big Ten Tournament championship game to capture just the third Big 10 championship in school history. Michigan State is just the second team in Big 10 history to finish the league season undefeated (6-0). Winning the Big 10 Tournament gives Michigan State an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Lever has scored four goals this season for the Spartans.
Penn State senior Bethany Marvel (Council Rock North) was named to the All-Big 10 second team for the second consecutive year. The senior midfielder has started every game this season. She has 21 points for her career (nine goals, three assists). Last year, she was named to the NFHCA All-Mideast Region Second Team. Teammate Ali Meves (Wissahickon) was named to the all-tournament team at this weekend’s Big 10 Tournament. The junior goalie collected eight saves in the tournament, including five in Penn State’s 2-1 upset of 12th ranked Ohio State. She finished the season with a Big 10 leading 108 saves.
Nicole Nelson (Souderton) scored a goal in Syracuse’s 2-1 loss to the University of Connecticut in Sunday’s Big East championship game. The Orange, ranked fifth in last week’s poll, closed out the regular season with a 17-3 record.
Senior Kasey Ruth (Souderton) scored a pair of goals in Temple’s 3-0 win over St. Joe’s in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament on Friday to earn a spot in the A-10 championship game for the first time in six years. The Owls fell to Richmond 3-0 in Sunday’s title game. Teammate Mandi Ruth (Souderton) earned a spot on the A-10 second team. She finished the season with four goals and six assists and was second on the team in both categories.
Freshman Rebecca Chylack (Souderton) was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year. The LaSalle freshman was also a first team All-Atlantic 10 pick. Chylack led the Explorers in goals (11), shots (64), game-winning goals (three) and defensive saves (three). She also shared the team lead for points (25). Chylack set a program record for points and goals by a freshman. Her 11 goals were the most by an Explorer since 1990, and her 25 points, third all-time in a season at LaSalle, are the most since 1980. Teammate Haley Froshour (Council Rock North) received honorable mention accolades. It was the second straight season the senior defensive back earned A-10 honors. A starter in every game of her career, Froshour anchored the Explorer defense that finished third in the league in goals-against average. She also had a career-high eight assists and was second on the team with a pair of defensive saves. She also earned academic all-conference honors with a 3.98 GPA as a secondary education/Spanish major.
Dottie O’Neill (Bensalem) was named the Player of the Year in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. The sophomore forward led Gwynedd-Mercy in scoring with 20 goals and 10 assists. Twice she was named the CSAC Player of the Week, four times she was credited with scoring the game winner, and she had two hat tricks. Gwynedd was 6-2 in the CSAC regular season and 11-8 overall.
Gretchen Kempf (Central Bucks South) contributed an assist in the University of Scranton’s 3-1 win over Goucher College in its season finale. Kempf led the team in points with 20 (7 goals, 6 assists).
Megan Purcell (Pennridge) had nine saves in Widener’s 8-0 loss to top-ranked Messiah in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament semifinals on Wednesday. The junior goalie entered the game ranked third in the league with 5.87 saves per game and fourth with a 2.63 goals-against average. She earned second team all-league honors last season.
Caitlin Koczynski (Neshaminy) earned second team All-PSAC honors. Shippensburg’s senior goalie posted a goals-against average of 0.79 in 1,321 minutes of play. She allowed just 15 goals, posting two solo shutouts. She stopped 68 shots and had a save percentage of .819.
FOOTBALL
Junior cornerback Shawnte Carroll (Harry S. Truman) was named the PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week after setting a school record for interceptions in a game, tying an NCAA Division II record for interceptions in a quarter and returning two for touchdowns in East Stroudsburg’s 54-28 win over Slippery Rock on Saturday. Carroll picked off four passes against the Rock, including three in the fourth quarter to tie a Division II mark that he shares with three other players. His touchdowns covered 36 yards in the second quarter and 40 yards in the fourth quarter. The victory vaulted the Warriors to the No. 4 spot in the NCAA Division II Super Regional One, giving them a home game against No. 5 Edinboro in the first round of the playoffs on Saturday. ESU will be making its fourth NCAA playoff appearance and the third in six years. Carroll had his first career interception in the fourth quarter last week against Millersville before turning in his record-breaking performance against Slippery Rock.
Junior outside linebacker Matt Freed (Souderton) had a career high 20 tackles, including 13 solo stops, four tackles for a loss and two sacks in East Stroudsburg’s win over Slippery Rock. The All-American has 121 tackles on the season (11 per game) and is the PSAC’s leading tackler for the second straight season after finishing 2008 tied for sixth in Division II with 126 tackles (11.5 per game). Freed has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II football first team for the second straight year. He will advance to the national ballot for consideration for Academic All-America honors. A history major with a 3.70 grade point average, he earned first team Daktronics Division II as a sophomore and third team Associated Press Little All-America recognition.
Freshman Brandon McManus (North Penn) connected on an 18-yard field goal with three seconds remaining to lead Temple to its seventh straight victory, a 34-32 win over Miami of Ohio on Thursday night at Lincoln Financial Field. McManus, who has made 14 of 19 field goals this season, also connected on a 42-yard field goal earlier in the game. This is the first time Temple has won seven straight since the 1973 squad won its final eight games. Temple is now 7-2 overall and in first place in the East Division of the Mid-American Conference.
Steve Miller (Pennsbury) had 107 receiving yards in West Chester’s 45-13 win over Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Rams closed out their season with a 7-4 record.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Chelsea Deeter (Neshaminy) had a pair of assists and teammate Emily Froehlich (Pennridge) also contributed an assist in Kutztown’s 4-1 win over East Stroudsburg in the PSAC quarterfinals on Tuesday. Sophomore Devon Miniscalco (Council Rock South) scored ESU’s lone goal.
Freshman Eva Gimello (Neshaminy) contributed an assist in The College of New Jersey’s 3-0 win over William Patterson in the semifinals of the New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday. Gimello was named to the All-NJAC first team. She has been a key player in the defensive third all season for the Lions, helping the team lead the NJAC in shutouts (13) and goals-against average (0.39).
MEN’S SWIMMING
Junior Jesse Bregman (Springfield) won the 50 free in 22.42 seconds and the 100 free in 48.36 seconds in Widener’s 124-78 win over Albright on Saturday. Teammate Sean Corcoran (Pennsbury) won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:21.45. Earlier in the week, Bregman won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.46 and the 100 free in 48.46 in Widener’s 118-87 win over Swarthmore. He was also part of the winning 400 free relay team that finished with a time of 3:17.49.
Bloomsburg freshman Jeremy Frey (Central Bucks East) took first in both the 200 free (1:50.23) and 200 back (2:00.97) in Saturday’s tri-meet at Kutztown. Tim Dorsch (Souderton) won first place in the 100 breast with a time of 1:02.98. Nick Ortlieb (North Penn) was part of the men’s winning 200 medley relay that finished with a time of 1:40.82.
Freshman Megan Lafferty (Upper Dublin) finished second in the 100 back with a time of 57.05 in the University of Maryland's 166-117 loss to North Carolina on Friday.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Tyla Conicello (Upper Merion) was part of the winning 400 medley relay team in Widener’s 109-93 loss to Albright on Saturday. The relay also finished first in Widener’s 114-90 loss to Swarthmore on Wednesday.
Madeline Barlow (Pennsbury) was part of Bloomsburg’s winning 200 medley relay team in Saturday’s tri-meet at Kutztown on Saturday.
Junior Amy Rowland (Upper Moreland) and senior Heather Van O’Linda (Norristown) were part of East Stroudsburg’s winning 200 free relay team in ESU’s 132-130 win over Lock Haven on Friday night. Rachel Vagnoni (Norristown) was part of Lock Haven’s 200 free relay. Rowland and Van O’Linda also were part of the second place 200 medley relay. Rowland also finished second in the 100 back (1:07.18) and 200 back (2:26.03). Van O’Linda was fourth in the 100 free and third in the 100 breast. Sam Hoch (Norristown) finished sixth in the 1000 free (12:58.66) and 100 fly (1:20.52). Lock Haven’s Kasey Campbell (Neshaminy) won the 500 and 1000 freestyle with times of 5:31.94 and 11:26.08 respectively.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Christina Laury (Hatboro-Horsham) had 14 digs in Lock Haven’s 3-0 win over East Stroudsburg on Tuesday. The win was the 22nd straight regular season win for the Lady Eagles.
