MEN’S BASKETBALL
Zach Sibel (Pennsbury)
was 5-for-6 from beyond the arc and finished with 22 points in Delaware Valley’s 85-82 loss to Lebanon Valley on Saturday.

Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown) scored a game high 23 points, which included six three-pointers, to lead Bloomsburg to a 67-64 overtime win over Gannon on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 66-62 loss to Mercyhurst, Christmas finished with 11 points. He had 12 points in Bloomsburg’s 70-61 win over Edinboro on Tuesday.

Freshman Arron Goodman (Council Rock South) contributed 20 points and 11 rebounds in Gwynedd Mercy’s 70-68 loss to Northwood on Thursday in the second game of the Rappaport Holiday Tournament in West Palm Beach. Twelfth-ranked Northwood is an NAIA Division II school that is coached by Rollie Massimino, who helped guide Villanova to the NCAA Division One Championship in 1985. Goodman was named to the all-tournament team. In Wednesday’s 77-67 opening game win over Montreat, Goodman pulled down nine rebounds while adding 17 points. Julian Hyden (Bensalem) had a strong second half, scoring 16 of his career high 21 points. He also grabbed nine rebounds for a personal best. In last Sunday’s 87-77 win over John Jay College, Goodman scored 22 of his career high 33 points in the second half. After shooting 4-for-11 in the first half, Goodman connected on 7-of-8 including 2-for-2 from downtown and a 7-for-8 effort at the free throw line. Hyden finished with seven points, three assists, two blocks and a rebound.

Junior guard Whis Grant (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 19 points, which included a 12-for-15 effort from the free throw line, to lead No. 12 East Stroudsburg to a 60-54 win over Mercyhurst on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 102-69 win at Edinboro, Grant scored 12 points. In Tuesday’s 76-64 win at Slippery Rock, Grant had 12 points.

Dalton Pepper (Pennsbury) scored a career high 26 points in Temple’s 101-65 win over Long Island on Saturday. The Pennsbury grad connected on 10-of-12 shots from the field (6-of-8 from three-point range) and also grabbed a career high 10 rebounds for his first ever double-double. In Wednesday’s 90-89 loss to Texas Southern, Pepper scored 14 points.

Senior guard Jesse Krasna (Pennsbury), in his second game back from injury, contributed 14 points and four assists in Ursinus College’s 79-51 loss to Division One Colgate on Sunday.

Senior AJ Picard (Souderton) contributed 20 points and six assists in No. 4 Cabrini’s 98-91 win over Randolph-Macon on Wednesday. The Souderton grad connected on 4-of-5 from three-point range. Cabrini is 9-0 on the season.

Freshman Josh Johnson (Norristown) scored 10 points and pulled down eight rebounds, connecting on 5-of-9 shots in Kutztown’s 88-56 loss to No. 7 IUP on Saturday. Johnson has scored in double figures in each of his nine games this season, the most by any freshman since 1985. In Wednesday’s 86-75 loss to Pitt-Johnstown, Johnson scored 15 points. Teammate Ryan Connolly (Souderton) contributed six rebounds and 10 points. In Tuesday’s 82-80 overtime victory at Clarion on Tuesday, Johnson collected his first career double-double, finishing with 14 points and a career high 13 rebounds. He connected on 7-of-9 shots from the field. Connolly added 11 points, including a clutch three-pointer.

Julian Bond (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored seven points off the bench in Lock Haven’s 56-55 win over Mercyhurst on Tuesday.

Senior guard Nick Christian (Bensalem) contributed 12 points, four rebounds and three steals in Philadelphia University’s 67-50 loss to Division One foe Boston College last Sunday.

Chris Davis (Norristown) had five assists and five steals in Alvernia University’s 89-55 win over York College on Saturday. He contributed a three-pointer that sparked a 25-7 run early in the game.

Senior forward Connor Poston (Hatboro-Horsham) scored 10 points in Gettysburg’s 59-53 loss to Richard Stockton on Saturday at the Daytona Beach Shootout. In Friday’s 66-63 win over Berry College, Poston contributed 11 points and seven rebounds.

Junior Marcus Badger (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 18 points in Randolph-Macon’s 98-91 loss to fourth-ranked Cabrini on Wednesday.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Villanova junior forward Emily Leer (Abington) has been named Philadelphia Big Five Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 15. Leer earned the award for her play in the Wildcats’ 83-47 win over La Salle. Leer also was honored by the Big East Conference, earning a spot on the weekly Honor Roll. In the La Salle victory, Leer scored a game high 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field, including a 3-of-3 effort from three-point range. She also tallied three rebounds and three assists in 23 minutes of action. After nine games, Leer ranks second on the team in scoring at 11.2 points per game. She is shooting 45.7 percent from the field (38-of-83) and 36.5 percent from three-point range (15-of-41).

Junior guard Shayla Felder (Cheltenham) scored all 12 of her points in the second half of Chestnut Hill’s 54-47 loss to The College of St. Rose on Sunday.

Kelsey Ryan (Neshaminy) scored nine points in Lock Haven’s 85-79 loss to Clarion on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 95-64 loss to No. 2 Gannon, Ryan had 11 points and four rebounds. In Tuesday’s 78-65 loss to Mercyhurst, Ryan and Sydney Morse (Norristown) pulled down five and four rebounds respectively.

Sophomore Alex Wheatley (Council Rock South) had 13 points in Princeton’s 84-80 overtime win over Delaware last Sunday.

Sophomore forward Tori Steinberg (Central Bucks South) connected on four-of-five shots from beyond the arc for 12 points in Ursinus College’s 90-75 win over Immaculata on Wednesday. As a team, Ursinus hit 53 percent of their shots from beyond the three-point line to finish 10-of-19.

Sarah Kiely (Council Rock North) contributed five rebounds, two assists and two points in American University’s 64-61 loss to Mount St. Mary’s on Monday. Freshman Lauren Crisler (North Penn) buried a jumper late in the first half to give American a 30-29 lead.

Colleen Hinde (Wissahickon) scored 11 points in Neumann University’s 71-68 loss to Rowan University on Thursday.

Sophomore Stephanie Knauer (North Penn) scored 18 points in Shippensburg’s 82-71 win over Seton Hill on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 70-49 loss to IUP, Knauer scored 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting and also pulled down eight rebounds. In Tuesday’s 90-74 win over Pittsburgh-Johnstown, Knauer had 16 points and nine rebounds despite being limited by foul trouble.

Junior guard Devin Gold (Council Rock North) hit a three-pointer to spark a 15-3 run in Caldwell College’s 76-71 win over Southern New Hampshire on Saturday. Gold finished with five points, two assists and one steal.

St. Thomas University senior Daniella Ciccarone (Quakertown) was named The Sun Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 15. The senior guard recorded back-to-back double-doubles in wins over Johnson and Wales and Edward Waters to lead the Bobcats to a 2-0 record on the week. Her 15 rebounds, which included nine offensive rebounds, led all players vs. Edward Waters. She also led all players on the floor with eight assists. She set seven career highs on the week: field goals made (six vs. JWU), field goals attempted (12 vs. EWU), rebounds (15 vs. EWU), offensive rebounds (nine vs. EWU), defensive rebounds (10 vs. JWU), assists (eight vs. EWU) and steals (six vs. JWU). Her eight assists vs. EWU and her six steals vs. JWU also marked team highs for the season.
Ciccarone scored 14 points in St. Thomas University’s 72-51 loss to Oklahoma Baptist on Friday. In Monday’s 79-64 loss to Albany State, Ciccarone contributed 10 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Sam Simononis (Pennridge) had 12 points, which included a 4-for-6 effort from three-point range, in Vermont’s 74-67 loss to Youngstown State on Saturday in the consolation game of the Christmas City Classic hosted by Lehigh University. In Friday’s 87-78 loss to Lehigh, Simononis had 10 points.

Freshman Curtrena Goff (Upper Dublin) had two treys and contributed 12 points in Rosemont College’s 80-67 loss to Delaware Valley on Tuesday.

Sophomore forward Carley Kendall (Souderton) scored 10 points and also pulled down eight rebounds and blocked a career best four shots in Washington College’s 58-55 loss to Eastern Mennonite University on Tuesday.

FOOTBALL

Albright College senior Drew Peterson (Harry S Truman) has been named a finalist for the Cliff Harris Small College Defensive Player of the Year award. The Cliff Harris Award will be presented to the top defensive player in the country representing Division II, III and NAIA colleges and universities. Finalists from all three divisions and an overall winner are chosen by head coaches and a prestigious selection committee of college and pro football greats. Peterson was one of 20 Division III finalists chosen and one of 49 players overall who were listed. The senior safety tied for first in the nation with eight total interceptions, returning them for 133 yards and one touchdown. He earned first team All-MAC honors for the second consecutive season. Peterson added eight pass breakups for 16 passes defended. He had 46 tackles (29 solo) with one for a loss. He totaled two interceptions vs. Kean, earning a spot on the D3football.com Team of the Week. He also had two INTs and returned one for a touchdown at FDU-Florham. For his career, Peterson had 16 interceptions and four touchdown returns (three INT, one punt). Originally recruited as a wide receiver, he switched to safety midway through his freshman season and quickly became one of the conference’s top defensive players. He also was named a first team All-East Region selection by D3football.com, and he earned All-American honors from four different organizations in 2013. He was named to the D3football.com second team and the AFCA Coaches All-America first team squads while also earning second team All-American honors from BSN. Most exclusively, he was a third team Associated Press Little All-American, which features primarily Division II players.

MEN’S SWIMMING
In that latest rankings, Gettysburg junior Ashton Leyens (Upper Dublin) is ranked 22nd in the 100 freestyle with a time of 45.80 and 23rd in the 200 freestyle (1:40.87). He as well as senior Sean Staerk (Abington) are part of the 800 free relay team that is ranked ninth (6:51.98), and Leyens is part of the 200 free relay team that is currently 11th (1:23.00).

Andrew Richey (William Tennent) won the 50 free with a time of 22.35 in IUP’s 156-84 win over Wheeling Jesuit in the Winter Sprint Invitational on Thursday. He also was part of the 200-yard medley relay team that finished first with a time of 1:36.06.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Cabrini sophomore Cassidy Koenig (Upper Merion) was honored by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) as the organization released its list of Division III South Region Volleyball All-Stars, earning second team accolades. The sophomore setter earned her second All-CSAC first team honor after ranking 17th in the nation with 10.39 assists per set. The sophomore scored 1,164 assists on the season, bringing her career total to 2,137. Koenig tallied at least 40 assists 10 times in 2013, including each of the Cavaliers’ five matches. The sophomore scored a career high 59 assists in a 3-1 win at Swarthmore. Koenig helped lead Cabrini to its fourth CSAC championship in the last five years. The club finished the year with a program best 29-5 mark.

WRESTLING
No. 17 Joe Stolfi (Souderton) pinned Mike Gregory in just 40 seconds at 285 in Bucknell’s 30-12 loss to No. 12 Pittsburgh on Saturday. Stolfi won his seventh consecutive bout, six of which have been by pin. The 40 seconds it took him to pin Gregory was the second fastest of his career. Stolfi is now 18-3 in his career in bouts decided by fall with a career-best nine wins by fall this season.

Penn State senior James Vollrath (Council Rock South) battled top-ranked and defending national champion Derek St. John tough at 157 before dropping a 10-4 decision in top-ranked Penn State’s 24-12 win over No. 3 Iowa in front of close to 14,000 fans at Iowa’s Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Saturday.
