PHILADELPHIA – Wednesday night’s CACC showdown pitting Philadelphia University against Goldey-Beacom at Herb Magee Court had a decidedly SOL look and feel about it.
Three former SOL standouts – Eddie DiRugeris (Pennsbury), Jim Connolly (Souderton) and Nick Christian (Bensalem) - played starring roles for Philadelphia U in its 74-55 win while freshman AJ Picard (Souderton) played important minutes off the bench for Goldey-Beacom.
It was Christian – who finished with 13 points – scoring on a drive to put PU on top 4-2, and the Rams led 8-4 after the freshman guard stripped the ball from a Lightning ball handler and coasted in for a layup.
Picard – in a game that was a homecoming of sorts – entered the game with 14:13 remaining in the half, and just over a minute later, he hit nothing but net on a trey from the top of the circle to pull his team to within five (17-12).
Connolly soared for a defensive rebound and fired the ball to teammate Corey Francisco for a fastbreak bucket that put the Rams on top 21-17, and then DiRugeris – in his first game action after being sidelined with an injury – went to work.
First, the sophomore point guard down broke down his defender for a layup, and shortly after Picard – who found himself defending Connolly – took a long defensive rebound and went coast-to-coast for the score to make it a 23-22 game, DiRugeris buried an outside jumper that put the Rams on top by six. A Connolly trey from NBA range gave the Rams a 31-22 lead, and after DiRugeris buried a baseline trey as time expired, the Rams led 38-29 at the intermission.
The Rams had the better of play in the second half on their way to the big win. Picard finished the night with seven points, three rebounds and an assist. Christian had 13 points, three assists and one steal while Connolly and DiRugeris both had 12 points for the Rams, who improved to 4-3 on the season (1-0 CACC).
