MEN’S BASKETBALL
Sophomore Ronnie Benson (Souderton) was one of three Bloomsburg players to shoot over 37 percent from three-point range during the 2008-09 season. He connected on 39-of-105 (37.1 percent).
Freshman Jim Connolly (Souderton) had two points in Philadelphia University’s 75-59 win over Lock Haven on Monday. Jeff Everett (North Penn) had five points for Lock Haven.
Senior guard Robbie Pines (Souderton) scored a career-high 13 points, including four clutch free throws down the stretch, to help East Stroudsburg improve to 6-0 with a 61-57 win over the UDC in the 45th Annual Pocono Classic on Saturday night. Pines made a pair of free throws with two seconds left for the final margin of victory. He also had five rebounds and four assists. In Friday night’s opening round game, Pines had eight points, seven rebounds and 10 assists, one shy of his career-high, in ESU’s 93-71 win over Queens (N.Y.). Pines handed out four assists in East Stroudsburg’s 59-50 win over the University of the Sciences on Tuesday.
Junior Chris McDevitt (Central Bucks West) led four players in double figures with 15 points in Widener’s 80-67 win over Arcadia on Wednesday in its Commonwealth Conference opener.
Senior forward Brian Oleksiak (Abington) had a team-high eight rebounds while also contributing seven points, three assists, two steals and a block in Shippensburg’s 71-58 win over Lock Haven on Wednesday. Jeff Everett (North Penn) had six points for Lock Haven.
Junior forward Ryan Washington (Wissahickon) scored 22 points in Kutztown’s 96-51 win over Penn-State Berks. Through two games, Washington and teammate Julius Gray lead Kutztown in scoring with 21.5 PPG. Kutztown is ranked 12th in the latest NABC/Division II poll.
Junior forward Lavoy Allen (Pennsbury) was named Temple’s Athlete of the Week for the week ending Nov. 30 after helping lead the men’s basketball team to a 2-1 week. He scored 16 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out a career-high seven assists in a 66-46 win over Ball State. He followed that with a season-high 18 points on eight-of-nine shooting from the field and pulled down 10 rebounds in a 61-50 win over Virginia Tech. Allen closed out the week with a nine-point, four-rebound effort in a 55-48 loss to St. John’s. He averaged 14.3 points, 7.7 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.7 blocks per game while shooting 58.8 percent from the field.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Antonia Gale (Cheltenham) scored a career-high 18 points in LaSalle’s 71-40 loss to Georgetown on Tuesday. Gale hit 3-of-5 shots from the floor while making a career-high 11 shots from the free throw line. She added eight rebounds, one shy of her career high, and two assists in 30 minutes of action. On Saturday, Gale had eight points and eight rebounds in LaSalle’s 68-57 win over Drexel. Ashley Gale (Cheltenham) scored nine points.
Freshman Jaime Donovan (Central Bucks East) was 3-of-6 from three-point range and finished with nine points in Lock Haven’s 74-71 loss to Wilmington on Friday. Heather McHugh (Norristown) added eight points for Lock Haven. Donovan had a career-high 15 points in Lock Haven’s 67-56 win over Mansfield on Wednesday. Donovan was 4-for-7 from three-point range. Nicole Pender (Cheltenham) had 12 points and seven assists for Mansfield.
Junior Misha Horsey (Cheltenham) had nine points, four assists and one steal in Stony Brook’s 71-40 win over St. Francis on Sunday. Horsey had 10 points in Wednesday’s 61-45 loss to Monmouth.
Redshirt freshman Mashira Newman (Upper Dublin) led Millersville to its sixth 2-0 start in eight seasons with a pair of strong performances against the University of the District of Columbia and Lock Haven. For her efforts, Newman was named the Eastern Division Athlete of the Week in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The speedy guard started off her Marauder career by posting game-highs of 13 points and eight steals in a 69-33 win over UDC. She was 5-of-8 from the floor in just 18 minutes of action. She led the team in free throws, connecting on 3-of-4 and added three rebounds, two assists, and blocked shot. She earned her first start in Millersville’s 72-52 win over Lock Haven. She scored a team-high 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including 3-of-4 from three-point range. She was 5-of-6 at the charity stripe and pulled down nine rebounds. She led the team in assists (5) and steals (4).
FOOTBALL
Freshman Brandon McManus (North Penn) is a key member of a Temple football team that earned its first bowl bid in 30 years. The Owls (9-3 overall, 7-1 MAC) accepted an invitation to play in the 2009 EagleBank Bowl at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, Dec. 29. ESPN will televise the game live. The Owls will face Army or UCLA, based on the outcome of the Dec. 12 Army/Navy game. An Army win will secure a bowl date with Temple. If Navy wins, UCLA will face the Owls. McManus connected on 17-of-24 field goals this season, including 14-of-15 from inside the 40.
MEN’S INDOOR TRACK
Bloomsburg freshman Matthew Caparro (Hatboro-Horsham) ran a time of 7.60 in the 60m at the Bison Invitational on Saturday. Abu Siddique (North Penn) ran a personal-best time of 53.64 in the 400m.
Ursinus senior Nick Bendas (Central Bucks East) was part of the 4x2 relay that finished sixth at the Winter Inviational with a time of 1:36.95. Sophomore John Ryder (Hatboro-Horsham) was part of the 4x4 relay team that finished eighth with a time of 3:44.85. Junior Inki Hong (North Penn) was third in the pole vault at 3.66 meters.
WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK
East Stroudsburg’s Kayla Littrell (William Tennent) finished fourth in the 220 yard dash at the season-opening Leopard Invitational this weekend.
Ursinus sophomore Amy Schaefer (Central Bucks South) had a record-breaking day at the Winter Invitational on Saturday, winning the pole vault with a school record mark of 10-0.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Sophomore Eva Gimello(Neshaminy) was a key member of The College Of New Jersey squad that fell to Messiah 1-0 in the 2009 NCAA Division III semifinals in San Antonio, Tx.
MEN’S SWIMMING
Shippensburg seniors Tim Smullen (Upper Dublin) and Nate Ryan (Hatboro-Horsham) were part of the 400 free relay that finished sixth with a time of 3:09.41 in the 2009 Zippy Invitational at the University of Akron on Sunday. Sophomore Richard Deley (Pennsbury) was part the 800 free relay team that placed fourth with a time of 7:02.80. Joe Keefe (Neshaminy) reached the ‘B’ group finals in the 100 backstroke, placing 13th with a season-best time of 54.05. Ryan and Keefe were part of the 200 medley relay squad that finished ninth with a time of 1:36.11.
Ben Safran (Central Bucks West) swam the third fastest time in Bloomsburg history in the 200 butterfly at the Zippy Invitational at the University of Akron. He finished 10th in the 200 fly finals with a time of 1:57.12. In the morning prelims, Safran turned in a time of 1:58.03, the fifth fastest time in school history. In the 200 breaststroke, Tim Dorsch (Souderton) was 17th with a time of 2:14.04 in the finals, a time that was good enough for ninth best all-time at Bloomsburg. Jeremy Frey (Central Bucks East) broke the school record in the 200 IM in the preliminaries with a time of 1:58.29. Frey went on to swim a time of 1:58.52 in the finals, finishing 12th overall. On Friday, Dorsch was 21st in the 100 breast with a time of 1:01.38 while Nick Ortlieb (North Penn) was 23rd with a time of 1:02.13.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Freshman Madeline Barlow (Pennsbury) wrapped up a memorable weekend in the pool for Bloomsburg on Sunday by breaking the school record in the 200 backstroke not once, but twice on the final day of the Zippy Invitational at the University of Akron. Barlow broke the school record in the 200 back in the morning prelims with a time of 2:06.93 while finishing in seventh place. In the evening finals, Barlow broke her own mark by swimming a 2:05.82 and taking fourth place overall in the event. Her time was also an NCAA Championship ‘B’ cut qualifying mark. On Saturday, Barlow took seventh in the 100 fly with a time of 58.30.
Penn State freshman Paige Whitmire (Souderton) finished fourth in the 100 backstroke at the Ohio State Invitational with a time of 56.38. She also was part of the 400 free relay that finished third with a time of 3:25.11. Penn State finished fourth at the invitational.
East Stroudsburg senior Heather Van O’Linda (Norristown) was 21st in the 50 freestyle at the 13th Annual Longnecker Invitational at Grove City College this weekend. Amy Rowland (Upper Moreland) was 22nd. Rowland and Van O’Linda were part of the 200 free relay that finished fourth with a time of 1:41.99. Van O’Linda was also part of the 200 medley relay that finished seventh (1:57.18), the 400 medley relay that finished eighth (1:57.18) and the 400 free relay that finished sixth (3:46.61). She also finished 13th in the 100 breast (1:14.05) and 19th in the 100 free (58.23).  Sam Hoch (Norristown) finished 33rd in the 500 free with a time of 6:14.67. She was part of the 200 medley relay that finished 18th with a time of 2:21.49. Hoch finished 15th in the 1650 free (21:24.61) and 21st in the 200 fly (2:48.04).
Lock Haven’s Kasey Campbell (Neshaminy) was fourth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:19.72 in the 13th Annual James E. Longnecker Invitational this weekend. Campbell took second in the 1,650 free with a conference qualifying mark of 18:35.02.
WRESTLING
East Stroudsburg redshirt senior Nate Nauroth (Quakertown), ranked No. 5 in Division II, won the 141-pound title at the Washington & Jefferson Open and earned victories in his first five matches this season, including four by fall. Narouth – forced to take a medical forfeit in his last two matches - finished sixth in Saturday’s 2009 PSAC Wrestling Championships at Edinboro.
