AJ Picard (Souderton) didn’t have his sights set on reaching the 1,000-point milestone when he embarked on his collegiate career, but the former Souderton standout reached that magical plateau on Monday night in Cabrini’s 95-84 win over Gwynedd Mercy College.
“It’s a great accomplishment as a player,” Picard said after the game. “I got it in high school - I really didn’t think I could do it again in college, but I did.
“That’s just because every year I had people around me that set me up for success and coaches that believed in me. That’s why I accomplished it again.”
Picard, who transferred to Cabrini for his senior year, amassed 894 points in three seasons at Goldey-Beacom College. He surpassed the 1,000-point mark with a three-point play with 8:35 remaining in the game.
“That’s a great accomplishment,” Cabrini coach Marcus Kahn said. “Whether they got all their 1,000 points here or not, that’s a great milestone for any player to reach.
“It speaks volumes to the work he has put in over the course of his college career. To do that at the start of his senior year when he has the rest of the year to go – that means he should be finishing well over that mark, which is very impressive.”
Picard finished the game with 20 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. He is averaging 16.1 points a game through eight games.
“What he’s brought to our program – we knew we would be having a new point guard this year,” Kahn said. “We brought in two freshmen to play that role. What he’s done is given us stability and now allows us to bring along those freshman while getting a Division II level point guard in our program, which is what we had.
“He certainly makes our team better and gives us a lot of stability at probably the most important position on our team. He’s done a great job for us. He’s a pleasure to be working with.”
Cabrini is off to an 8-0 start, and Picard is one of trio of players leading the charge, joining forces with Fran Rafferty (Upper Merion) and Aaron Walton-Moss. Rafferty is averaging 17.1 points a game and Walton-Moss is the team’s top scorer, averaging 25.9 a game.
“We work well with each other,” Picard said. “We started getting our chemistry early in the season. We knew if we got the chemistry together and got everyone involved – the sky is the limit. We’re all clicking on all cylinders.”
Cabrini is ranked sixth in the latest poll.

His 1.0 sacks-per-game average ranks among the Top10 nationally.

The Golden Rams rank 37th in the nation in rushing with just under 200 yards per game average.
