BASEBALL
Junior leftfielder Alex Latchum (Central Bucks South) contributed a sacrifice fly in Chestnut Hill’s 4-3 win over the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown on Saturday.
Sophomore catcher Matt Albaugh (North Penn) contributed a double in Kutztown’s 26-2 win over West Liberty University on Saturday. Albaugh came into the game batting .409 (fourth on the team).
Eric Kammler (Pennridge) had an RBI single in La Salle’s 9-7 loss to Duke on Saturday at Jack Coombs Field in Durham, N.C. In Friday’s 4-0 loss to Duke, Adam Kammler (Pennridge) had one of La Salle’s five hits. In Wednesday’s 12-5 win over Lafayette, Jon Gyles (Central Bucks West) connected on an opposite-field grand slam in the eighth inning to cap a seven-run rally. Kevin Christy (North Penn) collected the final two outs in the top of the eighth, stranding the go-ahead runner at third and setting the table for the Explorer rally in the bottom of the inning. With those two outs, Christy recorded his first win of the season and improved to 5-9 overall in his career. Sophomore Shane Petrellis (Council Rock South) pitched solid in relief, working 3.1 innings and allowing two runs (one earned) with two walks and two strikeouts.
Chris Edgar (North Penn) contributed a single in Millersville’s 7-1 win over Clarion in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday. Millersville won the second game 7-3 to earn the sweep.
Junior centerfielder Eric Blood (Pennridge) delivered a sacrifice fly in Chestnut Hill’s 2-1 win over Dowling. In Chestnut Hill’s 2-0 loss to Stonehill on Sunday, Alex Latchum (Central Bucks South) contributed a single.
East Stroudsburg (8-0) moved up to No. 5 and received one first place vote in this week’s Atlantic Region poll released by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Redshirt sophomore Andy Noga (Cheltenham) has won a pair of games on the mound. Keith Moyer (Souderton) and Kurtis Roberts (Quakertown) are also on the squad.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
For the second straight week, Temple senior forward Lavoy Allen (Pennsbury) was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week, this time for the week ending March. 5. It is his fourth career A-10 weekly honor. Allen averaged 19.0 points, 14.5 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 1.5 assists per game in the Owls’ 2-0 week. The 6-9 forward extended his streak of double-doubles to five in recording his ninth and 10th double-doubles of the season. He scored 14 points and pulled down a season-high 18 rebounds in Temple’s 73-67 overtime win at UMass on Wednesday. Allen followed that with a game and career-high 24 points on Senior Day to help the Owls to a 90-82 victory over La Salle. He also grabbed 11 rebounds in the final home game of his career. Allen, who is Temple’s all-time rebound leader (1,103) and ranks 27th on the all-time scoring list with 1,380 points, leads the Owls and ranks fourth in the A-10 with an 8.3 rebound average. He also tops the team and ranks fourth in the league in blocks per game (1.8) while placing second on the squad with an 11.8 scoring average.
Allen also was the Atlantic 10 and Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the week for the week ending Feb. 27. It was his third career A-10 weekly honor and the seventh time he has earned the Big 5 accolade. Allen averaged 18.0 points, 14.5 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and 2.5 assists per game in the Owls’ 1-1 week. The 6-9 forward led Temple in scoring and rebounding in both games, recording his seventh and eighth double-doubles of the season. He made a career-high three three-pointers in the team’s 78-61 loss at then #1 Duke on Feb. 23. He also pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with his 17 points against the Blue Devils. Allen followed that with a season and game high 16 rebounds while scoring a game-high 19 points in the Owls’ 57-41 win at George Washington on Feb. 26. Already Temple’s all-time rebound leader, he recorded the 200th block of his career in the GW win to become just the fifth Temple player to reach that milestone.
Bruce Kennedy (Wissahickon) scored nine points in Cheyney’s 82-73 loss to Slippery Rock in a PSAC semifinal game on Friday. In Cheyney’s 77-75 win over #1 Mansfield in the quarterfinals, Kennedy scored 16 points.
Senior forward Dom Farrello (William Tennent) paired 18 points and pulled down 13 rebounds in Cabrini’s 91-84 win over SUNY-Purchase in an NCAA tournament opening round game on Saturday night. He converted 6-of-6 from the foul line late in the second half. It was Farrello’s seventh double-double of the season and eighth of his Cabrini career. Freshman forward Fran Rafferty (Upper Merion) also reached double figures, scoring 10 points – all in the second half. Sophomore center Goran Dulac (Pennsbury) finished with eight points and 10 rebounds. The win propelled Cabrini to the ‘Sweet 16’ round of the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history.
Philadelphia University’s Jimmy Connolly (Souderton) earned his first all-conference nomination. The sophomore guard was named to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference second team all-league.
Connolly and freshman Nick Christian (Bensalem) both scored eight points in Philadelphia University’s 64-54 loss to Chestnut Hill College in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference quarterfinals on Tuesday. Christian also handed out five assists.
Junior Dan DelConte (Wissahickon) scored 18 points in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 83-73 loss to Buffalo State in an opening round game of the 2011 NCAA Tournament on Friday night. The Griffins closed out the 2010-11 season with a final mark of 21-7.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
La Salle senior Ashley Gale (Cheltenham) was named to the Atlantic 10 Second Team All-Conference and All-Defensive Team. She also earned Most Improved Player of the Year. In conference-only games, Gale led the league in scoring with 20.7 points per game. Earlier this season, she became the 23rd women’s basketball player to reach the 1,000-point mark, doing so on national television against Fordham. Gale also finished the regular season as the league leader in three-pointers per game (3.2) and steals per game (3.1). The senior earned A-10 Co-Player of the Week honors on Feb. 21 after averaging 23 points on the week and going a perfect 16-for-16 from the free throw line.
American University senior Liz Leer (Abington) has been selected to the inaugural Academic All-Patriot League Team as well as the All-Patriot League First Team. She played a key role in leading the Eagles to a share of the Patriot League title with a 10-4 conference record. It is AU’s third conference regular season title in the last four years. Overall, American has a 20-8 record in the regular season. A Public Communications major, Leer has registered a 3.395 cumulative GPA. She has been named to the Dean’s List in four semesters and was a member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll twice. Earlier this year, she was named a Capital One Academic All-District Second Team honoree. On the court, Leer is a two-time All-Patriot League First Team honoree, only the second AU women’s basketball student-athlete to ever earn that distinction. Leer leads AU in both scoring and rebounding this season with 13.5 PPG and 6.9 rebounds per game, both of which rank fifth in the Patriot League. She leads the conference in field goal percentage (51.8 percent) and three-point percentage (45.3). Leer has set her mark in AU history with 1,347 career points, the fourth most in school history, along with 721 career rebounds, the third most at AU. She is the career leader in blocked shots with 205, which ranks sixth in Patriot League history. She also ranks as the most prolific three-point shooter in program history at 42.3 percent, second all-time in career foul try accuracy (81.4 percent) and fifth all-time in career field goal proficiency (51.7 percent). Additionally, Leer interned last summer at the Becky Lee Women’s Fund, an organization that raises awareness for domestic violence.
Freshman Sarah Kiely (Council Rock North) contributed six points and two rebounds while senior Liz Leer (Abington) added four points, three blocked shots and three rebounds in American’s 72-44 win over Holy Cross in the Patriot League Tournament quarterfinals on Saturday.
Walsh freshman Daniella Ciccarone (Quakertown) earned all-freshman team honors after averaging 6.8 points, 1.7 assists, 2.1 rebounds while shooting 49 percent from the floor and 87 percent from the foul line, which is fourth best in the NAIA. She averaged 15.2 minutes in 30 games. Walsh, ranked No. 4 in the NAIA and winner of the AMC Tournament, will play Florida Memorial University on Thursday in the first round at the 20th Annual State Farm-NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship in Sioux City, Iowa. Walsh is one of four number one seeds in the tournament. Walsh (27-4) will take a 22-game win streak into the championships.  Ciccarone scored 11 points in Walsh’s 77-54 win over Daemen College in the AMC Tournament title game on Tuesday.
Redshirt sophomore guard Ashley Rosario (Harry S. Truman) contributed eight points, two rebounds and one assist off the bench in Goldey-Beacom’s 66-54 upset win over No. 15 nationally-ranked Holy Family in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference finals on Saturday. For Holy Family, senior Lindsey Tennett (Pennridge) contributed 10 points and eight rebounds off the bench. It is the school’s first-ever CACC championship, and with the win, the Lightning (18-11) earned the school’s first-ever berth in the NCAA East Regional Tournament. When the two teams last met on Jan. 13, Goldey-Beacom ended Holy Family’s NCAA Division II record 110-game regular season conference winning streak and 71-game home winning streak at the Campus Center when the Lightning stunned Holy Family with a 64-51 win. Holy Family won 13 straight since then until falling on Saturday night. In the semifinals, Rosarios handed out a game-high five assists while also contributing six points and six rebounds in Goldey-Beacom’s 62-57 upset of top-seeded Bloomfield College.
Millersville sophomore guard Mashira Newman (Upper Dublin) was named the PSAC Eastern Division Athlete of the Week after guiding her team to a 2-0 week. It marks the first time this season that Newman received the award and the third in her career. In two games, Newman averaged 24.5 points, 6.0 assists and 5.5 steals. She shot .900 from the free throw line and .545 from beyond the arc. She also led Millersville to its fourth straight 20-win season. Last Wednesday, the Marauders (21-5, 11-3 PSAC East) closed out regular season home play with a 70-56 win over Shippensburg. In that contest, Newman recorded a career-high 30 points, the most points by a Marauder since the 2005-06 season. She scored 19 of her 30 points in the second half on 6-of-6 shooting from the floor, which included 2-of-2 from the 3-point line. She also was 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. In Millersville’s 67-58 win over Kutztown, Newman scored 19 points, including a game-high three treys and handed out eight assists. As Division II’s third-best steal generator, she had a game-high eight steals.  Millersville, which closed out the regular season with a 21-5 record, notched its fourth straight bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Marauders are picked sixth out of eight teams in the Atlantic Region. In what will be a rematch of last year’s first round game, Millersville will take on West Liberty. One year ago, the Marauders downed the Hilltoppers 66-50 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Newman scored 23 points and handed out four assists in Millersville’s 70-58 loss to Edinboro in Friday night’s PSAC semifinal contest. In Tuesday’s 70-65 win over West Chester in a quarterfinal game of the PSAC Tournament, Newman scored 15 and contributed a season-high nine assists. She also had a game-high six steals and was 4-for-5 from the free throw line. Teammate Sophia Waters (Norristown) added 11 points, nine of which came from beyond the arc.
Senior Addie Micir (Council Rock North) contributed eight points, six assists and five rebounds in Princeton’s 68-59 win over Harvard on Sunday to capture the 2011 Ivy League title. As a result, Princeton is the first team to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament. This is the Tigers’ ninth Ivy League championship and second straight. The Tigers finished their season with a perfect 13-0 record at home. They are 23-4 overall and 12-1 in the league with one game remaining at Penn on Tuesday.
Freshman Taylour Alston (North Penn) had five rebounds and five blocked shots while Dara Nelson (North Penn) contributed eight points – which included a 6-of-7 effort at the foul line – and Jordan Dominic (Pennridge) added six points in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 58-45 loss to Alvernia in an ECAC South Region Tournament game. Gwynedd closed out its season with a final record of 17-11.
Swarthmore senior Kathryn Stockbower (Upper Dublin) has been named a finalist for the prestigious Jostens Trophy, the Salem (Va.) Rotary Club announced on Tuesday. The Jostens Trophy is a national award created by the Rotary Club of Salem, Va., to honor the most outstanding men’s and women’s Division III basketball players of the year. The award takes into account three vital parts: basketball ability, academic prowess and community service. The senior captain capped off an illustrious career with a record-breaking final season. For the 2010-11 season, she led the Centennial Conference in rebounding average (12.4 RPG), finished fourth in scoring average (14.8 PPG), fifth in shooting percentage (48 percent) and 16th in the nation in rebounding average. During the season, Stockbower – a preseason second team All-American – broke numerous Swarthmore program records and reached several national and conference milestones. With 83 career double-doubles, she is the all-time NCAA Division III leader, breaking the record with her 80th career double-double at Johns Hopkins on Feb. 5. She also became Swarthmore’s all-time leading rebounder against Muhlenberg on Feb. 2. Stockbower is one of only three players in Centennial Conference history to reach 1,500 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. A double major in biology and German studies, Stockbower has compiled numerous academic and athletic awards over her career. Her accolades in the classroom include 2010-11 Capital One Academic All-America and All-District II First team, 2009-10 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America third Team, 2009-10 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II First Team, 2008-09 and 2009-10 Philadelphia Inquirer All-Area Academic All-Star Teams, 2009-10 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women’s Basketball Player of the year and 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 Centennial Conference Academic Honor roll selection. Stockbower also was named to the All-Centennial Conference First Team. It is the fourth time she was named to the first team. The senior captain is just the second player in conference history to earn first team All-Centennial honors four times. Stockbower is one of just five students who were also named to the Conference Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes sophomores, juniors and seniors who are key performers and have a 3.40 cumulative grade point average or higher.
Holy Family junior Lauren Peters (Central Bucks West) was named to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference third team all-conference squad. It is the second straight season she was named to the third team squad. She is averaging 7.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per game to go along with 4.0 assists per contest. In addition, Peters collected a career high 54 steals this season.
Bloomsburg freshman Danielle Derr (Upper Dublin) was named the PSAC Eastern Division Freshman of the Week for the period ending Feb. 26. This is the second time this season Derr has received this honor. Derr averaged 6.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game last week as the Huskies claimed the PSAC East title outright. It was the team’s first PSAC East title since the 2000-01season. Derr scored six points and grabbed two rebounds in the Huskies win over East Stroudsburg, then followed that with six points and eight rebounds in the Huskies win over West Chester. For the week, she shot 41.7 percent from the floor. On the season, Derr averages 4.5 points and 2.9 rebounds per game.
Derr scored six points in Bloomsburg’s 77-71 loss to California (Pa.) in a PSAC semifinal game on Friday. In Bloomsburg’s 80-66 win over Kutztown in quarterfinal action, Derr also had six points.
MEN’S LACROSSE
Sophomore Johnny Casey (Abington) scored a pair of goals while Craig Hunsberger (Pennridge) won a key face-off in Widener’s 6-5 win over Swarthmore on Saturday.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Junior attack Kelly McKay (Pennridge) scored two goals in Chestnut Hill’s 16-10 loss to Mercy College on Saturday.
Sophomore Lauren McDermott (North Penn) scored a goal – her team-leading ninth of the season – in La Salle’s 6-5 loss to Villanova on Friday. Junior Allison Herman (North Penn) made her first start since the 2009 season. She caused a turnover and collected a ground ball.
Senior Michelle Mangiaruga (North Penn), a two-time first team All-PSAC East selection, scored a goal in East Stroudsburg’s 10-7 win at Georgian Court on Saturday. Sophomore Ali Green (North Penn) also scored a goal. In Friday’s 16-9 loss to No. 6 Le Moyne, Mangiaruga scored a pair of goals.
Senior attack Lindsey Urban (Central Bucks East) had four goals in Ursinus College’s 17-8 win over Eastern on Thursday. Defensively, sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Chatburn (Upper Dublin) had six caused turnovers. Jackie Kimmell (Hatboro-Horsham) played a half in goal for Ursinus.  Kendall Rood (Central Bucks East) scored a goal for Eastern.
Colleenn Dellostretto (Upper Moreland) contributed four goals and two assists in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 14-13 win over Cazenovia on Saturday. Sophomore Kirsten Walther (Souderton) also scored a goal for the Griffins. In Wednesday’s season opener – a 22-5 rout of Lancaster Bible, Dellostretto and Jenna D’Arcy (Hatboro-Horsham) both had two goals.
Lock Haven is ranked No. 3 in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) National Poll. This is the first poll of the regular season. Included on Lock Haven’s roster are SOL alums Lindsay Walbrandt (Souderton), Kate Smyth (Pennsbury) and Samantha Hurley (Council Rock South). The Lady Eagles will begin the 2011 season on Wednesday.
SOFTBALL
Beth Everist (North Penn) delivered a solo home run in Mount St. Mary’s 4-3 win over Iona on Saturday. With the home run, Everist moved into third place for career home runs with 14 while teammate Courtney Zingle (Hatboro-Horsham) moved into eighth place for at-bats (439). On Friday, Amanda Sadowl (Hatboro-Horsham) tossed a three-hit shut while Everist sparked the offense with a 4-for-4 performance and three RBIs to lead Mount St. Mary’s to a 9-0 win over UMBC, which did not get a runner past first against Sadowl. Everist moved into seventh place for career RBIs (63).
In Mount St. Mary’s 2-1 win over George Mason in its season opener on Wednesday, Sadowl allowed one run on four hits with two strikeouts in a complete-game opener. Zingle had a pair of hits while Everist delivered delivered an RBI double.
Alicia Hughes (Quakertown) picked up her first win of the season in Millersville’s 9-7 win in extra innings over Urbana on Sunday. In 6.1 innings, Hughes faced 27 batters, struck out seven and gave up just one run.
Heather Hannum (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed hits in both Kutztown’s 9-4 win over Felician and 6-1 win over Dominican on Saturday on the first day of its spring break trip. Kutztown (9-2 overall) is ranked 21st in this week’s National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association (NFCA) top 25 poll.
Senior Erin Holloway (Souderton) picked up a pair of wins on Sunday as IUP remained undefeated at the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, Fla. In IUP’s 8-3 win over Northwood, Holloway went the distance, allowing six hits and striking out eight. In the Crimson Hawks’ 4-2 win over St. Cloud State, Holloway relieved starter Kelly King in the fifth and pitched two and two-thirds innings of no-hit ball with five strikeouts. She ended the game by striking out the side in the seventh to remain undefeated in four decisions this season. In Saturday’s 7-2 win over Southern Indiana on the first day of the Rebel Games, Holloway allowed three hits and one earned run while striking out 11. She struck out the side in the first and third innings and has 20 strikeouts in her first two starts of the season. In Wednesday’s season opener, Holloway tossed a one-hit shutout to lead IUP to an 11-0 win over Shepherd. She struck out the side in the second and had two strikeouts in each of the first, third and fourth innings. When Holloway retired Shepherd in order in the fifth, the eight-run rule was enforced.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Widener freshman Mick Coleman (William Tennent) was tied for seventh in the pole vault at 4.56 meters in this weekend’s ECAC Championships at the famed New York Armory.
La Salle’s 4x800 relay team – which included Nick Crits (Wissahickon) and Paul Reilly (Upper Dublin) - finished fourth overall with a time of 7:28.02 on the final day of the ECAC/IC4A Indoor Championships held at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center.

Lock Haven’s Vanita Moses (Neshaminy) received All-Region honors for her performance in the weight throw.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Senior outside hitter Justin Brubaker (Souderton) contributed 16 kills to go along with five digs in Philadelphia Biblical’s 3-1 loss to Rutgers-Newark on Saturday. In Friday’s 3-1 win over Kean University, Noah Prickett (Pennsbury) contributed a team-high 14 kills and six digs. In PBU’s 3-0 win over eighth-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology, Brubaker had 12 kills, eight digs and four blocks while Prickett had nine kills and 16 digs. Jon Rose (Central Bucks West) added three kills, three digs and seven blocks while Ethan Mawhinney (Neshaminy) had five kills. Leading Stevens Institute of Technology was Jonathan Landis (Pennridge) with 11 kills and eight digs.
Freshman Austin Jacoby (Pennridge) contributed a team-high 17 kills to go along with nine digs in Stevenson’s 3-1 loss to Ramapo on Sunday. The loss snapped Stevenson’s five-game winning streak.
