BASEBALL
Moravian College junior rightfielder Matt Hanson (Central Bucks West) has been selected as the 2014 Landmark Conference Baseball Player of the Year and also earned a spot on the first team for the second straight year. As of May 7, he was hitting .401 with 57 hits, nine doubles, four triples, a team-leading three home runs and 46 RBIs. He leads the Greyhounds with 52 runs scored, 24 walks and 12 hit-by-pitch, and he also had 12 stolen bases. Earlier this season, Hanson reached the 100-hit milestone, and he went on to become the seventh player in school history to reach 150 career hits. Hanson has started 40 games this season with 63 putouts and an assist. “Matt had a tremendous year for us,” coach Paul Engelhardt said. “He was our leading hitter from the start to the end. His work ethic is second to none, and for that reason, he stands out among his peers. He is very deserving of this award, and I know that he would want to recognize all of his teammates for helping him achieve it. Matt is very deserving of this award as he has maintained each and every game a very high level of excellence.”
Hanson had an RBI single in No. 22 Moravian’s 3-2 win over No. 6 Rowan on Friday.

Junior second baseman Billy Fleming (Council Rock South) was 4-for-6 with a triple, home run, two RBIs and three runs scored in West Virginia’s 9-8 loss to Kansas on Sunday. In Saturday’s 5-2 loss to Kansas, Fleming doubled and scored a run. In Friday’s 5-3 loss to Kansas, Fleming was 2-for-4 with one run scored. In Tuesday’s 4-3 win over Virginia Tech, Fleming was 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Eastern University sophomore Andrew Check (Central Bucks West) received All-Freedom Conference honorable mention recognition. An outfielder who transferred to Eastern this season, Check made an immediate impact, leading off the year with an eight-game hitting streak en route to a .342 season at the plate. Check, who batted near the top of the lineup for most of the season, scored 25 runs and knocked in 17 runs. He also had eight doubles and a triple.

Senior John Burns (Neshaminy) had three hits, including a double, and scored a run in Gwynedd Mercy’s 4-0 win over Immaculata in an elimination game in the 2014 CSAC tournament on Friday. David Blount (Harry S Truman) was 2-for-4 with one RBI and a run scored. Christopher Hens (Hatboro-Horsham) delivered an RBI single. The Griffins’ season came to an end when they fell to Keystone College 7-1 in Sunday’s title game. In Friday’s 17-9 loss to Keystone, Burns was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. In Thursday’s 20-11 opening round win over Immaculata, Burns knocked in a career high six runs and was a triple shy of the cycle. He finished the game 4-for-5 with two doubles, a home run, six RBIs and two runs scored. Blount was 3-for-6 with a double, two RBIs and one run while Hens had one hit and scored a pair of runs.

Freshman Randy Frankenfield (Wissahickon) started and threw six innings, allowing four runs on six hits with two walks and a career-high seven strikeouts in York’s 7-6 win over Stevenson on Saturday.

Matt Hollenbeck (Hatboro-Horsham) allowed just two runs on six hits while striking out eight to earn the win in Georgetown’s 8-3 win over Butler on Saturday. He improved to 5-2 on the season with a team-best 3.18 ERA.

Craig Lepre (North Penn) contributed an RBI single and scored a run in Albany’s 8-5 loss to St. John’s on Tuesday. In last Sunday’s 9-5 win over NJIT, Lepre was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Jim Smith (North Penn) was 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored in Saint Peter’s 7-5 loss at Rutgers on Tuesday.

Ryan Kelly (Hatboro-Horsham) did not allow a hit in a scoreless inning of relief in St. Joseph’s 9-0 win over George Mason on Sunday, striking out one and walking one.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
Cabrini senior Fran Rafferty (Upper Merion) earned second team All-ECAC Division II honors. The Upper Merion grad established himself among the nation’s best shooters throughout his career. The senior posted 14.3 points per contest while shooting 0.507 from the floor and 0.454 from three-point range. He connected on at least three three-pointers in 15 of the team’s 28 games this season, including six at Marywood and five at Immaculata en route to a career high 31 points. Rafferty ranked among the CSAC’s top 10 in points, field goal percentage, three-point percentage and three-pointers made per game. For his career, Rafferty ranks fourth on Cabrini’s all-time points list with 1,403 and 15th in rebounding with 559 boards. Rafferty was part of a senior class that was the winningest in program history with 106 career wins.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Jessica Schmidt (Abington)
received the Most Valuable Player Award for women’s basketball at Penn State Abington’s annual awards banquet on Monday.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Alex Kane (Central Bucks East)
received the Wes Olsen Male Scholar Athlete Award at Penn State Abington’s annual athletic banquet on May 5. The award was established in 1980 by former Athletic Director Wes Olsen to honor one male and female athlete who participated in the current school year and has the highest cumulative GPA after completion of two semesters. Kane also received the Outstanding Male Athlete Award, which is given to the most outstanding student-athlete who has demonstrated the characteristics commensurate with the Penn State Abington athletic tradition of leadership, character and morals.

MEN’S LACROSSE
Freshman goaltender Austin Marshall (Neshaminy) combined with teammate Hank Altschuler for 11 saves in Cabrini’s 15-9 loss to No. 3 Stevenson in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Louisville sophomore Cortnee Daley (Hatboro-Horsham) was selected to the All-BIG EAST second team. The sophomore midfielder played in all 19 games for the BIG EAST champions. The Hatboro grad was fourth on the team with 39 goals and two assists (41 points). She connected on 41-of-73 shots (.534 shooting percentage). Daley has three game-winning goals. She is second on the team with 36 grounds balls and first in caused turnovers with 20.
Daley scored a goal that gave Louisville a 10-9 lead with 1:13 remaining in the Cardinals’ opening round NCAA Tournament game over 10th-ranked Ohio State Friday. The Buckeyes came back to knot the score with eight seconds remaining, but the Cardinals earned an 11-10 win in the second overtime period. It was the first NCAA Tournament win in school history. The Cardinals' season came to an end on Sunday when they fell to No. 5 Northwestern 11-8 in a second round game.

The College of New Jersey freshman Kelly Schlupp (Council Rock South) was named New Jersey Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week. The freshman goalie was in the net for a pair of wins as TCNJ rolled to the championship of the NJAC Tournament, allowing just four goals in 120 minutes of action.
Schlupp split duties with two teammates and had one save to garner her 17th victory of the season in Saturday’s 19-7 win over Susquehanna University in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament Saturday.

Lock Haven teammates Kelly Hamilton (Central Bucks South) and Lindsay Walbrandt (Souderton) were named to the 2014 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II All-South Region second team. Hamilton, the 2014 PSAC Tournament MVP, had 51 goals on the year while Walbrandt is the leader of Lock Haven’s defense that has allowed less than six goals a game. An all-around contributor, Walbrandt has 13 goals, one assist, 25 draw controls, 24 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers.
Lock Haven punched its ticket to the Final Four with a 17-6 win over No. 7 Pfeiffer University on Saturday in a first round game of the NCAA Division II Tournament. Hamilton scored a goal, and Melinda Wojt (Souderton) had three caused turnovers and three ground balls to spark Lock Haven’s defense.

SOFTBALL
Saint Joseph’s junior Ashley Alden (William Tennent) was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Conference second team. The Tennent grad started all 38 games this season in her first year with the Hawks. Heading into this weekend’s A-10 Tournament, she led the team in hits (35) and runs scored (25). Alden transferred to St. Joe’s after spending two seasons at Rutgers. She is batting a career-high .343 and is tied for the team lead in home runs (four) and is third in RBIs (15). In conference play, Alden is batting .405 with 10 RBIs, 14 runs scored, a .619 slugging percentage and a .510 on-base percentage as she helped St. Joe’s to a 10-6 record and third place heading into the A-10 Championship.
Alden hit a two-run double in St. Joe’s 11-9 season-ending loss to Saint Louis in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament on Friday. Alden was named to the A-10 All-Championship Team, finishing the tournament with a team-high eight RBIs, two home runs and a .345 batting average. She slugged 1.000 at the conference championship with three extra-base hits. She finished the year with a .345 batting average and led the team in hits (39), home runs (six), RBIs (23) and slugging percentage (.584). Earlier in the day, Alden was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored in St. Joe’s 9-5 win over Dayton. In Thursday’s 6-5 second round loss to Saint Louis, Alden was 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and a run scored. In Wednesday’s 7-4 win over La Salle in an opening round game, Alden had a pair of RBIs, and she started a double play to cap the victory in the seventh inning.
Junior catcher Erin Quense (Neshaminy) hit a pair of home runs to lead West Chester to a 2-0 win over 12th-ranked California (Pa.) in the final of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region 1 Tournament on Saturday. Quense led off the top of the third with a home run down the left field line, and she also hit a solo home run to center in the fifth inning. The win vaulted West Chester to the NCAA Atlantic Super Regional to play West Virginia Wesleyan (44-13), who defeated Shippensburg twice in the final of the Atlantic Region 2 Tournament on Sunday. It marks the second straight year in which the Golden Rams have reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division II Tournament. In Saturday’s 6-3 win over California (Pa.), Jess Schuck (Council Rock South) connected on her fifth home run of the season with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to put West Chester on top 5-2. Quense was 2-for-3 while Kim Begley (Abington) was 1-for-3 with an RBI single. In Friday’s 1-0 win over Bloomsburg in the opening round game, senior Megan Kelly (Hatboro-Horsham) delivered a one-out, walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded to plate junior pinch runner Ali Vavala (Central Bucks East) with the game winner. The Golden Rams strung together four straight hits in the seventh, including singles by Quense and Begley.

In Binghamton’s 8-7 loss to Albany in an American East Tournament first round game Thursday, freshman designated hitter Bridget Hunt (Harry S Truman) became the first player in program history to hit for the cycle. In addition, she is the first Binghamton player to record a four-hit game since Feb. 17, 2012. She finished the game 4-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored.  

Junior Julie Wambold (Hatboro-Horsham) was 1-for-3 and hit her sixth home run on the season in sixth-seeded Syracuse’s 10-4 loss to third-seeded Virginia Tech on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament.

Junior Liz Parkins (Souderton) hit an opposite field home run to lead off the seventh inning Saturday, propelling No. 22 Shippensburg through the winner’s bracket of the 2014 NCAA Atlantic Region 2 Tournament as the Raiders earned a 1-0 win over West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday. The Red Raiders saw their season end when they fell to West Virginia Wesleyan twice on Sunday.

La Salle freshman Christina Bascara (Pennsbury) was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team. The Pennsbury grad started all 40 games at third base, and she led the team with a .330 batting average. She had two triples and ranked second on the team in runs scored (21). She added four doubles, four home runs and 13 RBIs. In A-10 play, Bascara batted .340 and hit eight of her 10 extra-base hits against conference opponents.
Bascara was 2-for-4 with one RBI in La Salle’s 7-4 loss to St. Joseph’s in the Atlantic 10 Tournament on Wednesday. Suzanne Swanicke (Pennsbury) also had a base hit.

Lehigh sophomore Morgan Decker (Central Bucks South) was named the Patriot League Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. The CB South grad, Lehigh’s third baseman and No. 3 hitter, is Lehigh’s first two-time Patriot League Player of the Year since the 1995 and 1996 seasons. Lehigh’s leading hitter at .409 with nine home runs and 38 runs batted in, Decker was dominant in Patriot League play, batting .531 (26-for-49) with four home runs and 16 RBIs. Overall, Decker leads the Patriot League in home runs, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. In addition, she drew 30 walks while being hit by a pitch 11 times.
Decker also earned a spot on the Academic All-Patriot League team. The sophomore standout holds a 3.64 GPA majoring in behavioral neuroscience. Last week, she was named to the Capital One Academic All-District II team and will be up for Academic All-America honors later this month.
Decker was 2-for-2 with an RBI in Lehigh’s season-ending 3-1 loss to Bucknell in the Patriot League Tournament on Friday. She finished her sophomore season hitting .412 with nine home runs and 39 RBIs.

MEN’S TENNIS
Wilkes University junior Brendon Blachowski (Council Rock North) earned a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles in Wilkes University’s 5-1 win over King’s College in the title match of the Freedom Conference Championship last weekend. It is the seventh straight conference championship for Wilkes, dating back to the 2007-08 season. Blachowski, the tournament MVP was part of the third doubles team that earned an 8-2 win.

Penn State Abington senior Steven Ly (Bensalem) was honored with the Al Miles Memorial Tennis Award, which demonstrates the benefits of being a student-athlete on and off the tennis court. The recipient must be a fulltime student and complete two semesters with a 3.0 GPA with excellence in English/Humanities and demonstrate the interest in learning and teaching the game of tennis.

WOMEN’S TENNIS
Honora Hegarty (Abington)
received the Most Valuable Player Award for women’s tennis at Penn State Abington’s annual awards banquet on Monday.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Gwynedd Mercey’s Matt French (Bensalem) finished third in both the 1500 meter run and 3000 meter run at the CSAC Quad Invitational on Monday. Ryan Downs (Council Rock South) claimed third place in the javelin with a toss of 39.81 meters. Gwynedd finished second to Keystone College in the team standings.

In addition to winning the decathlon, Johns Hopkins senior Michael Spadaro (Council Rock South) placed fifth in the triple jump (13.13m) at last weekend’s Centennial Conference Outdoor Championships. The team made history when they won the program’s first outdoor title.

University of Pennsylvania sophomore Drew Magaha (Upper Moreland) qualified for the finals in the 800 meters at the 2014 Outdoor Heptagonal Championships on Saturday.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Gwynedd Mercy sophomore Zakiyyah Richardson (Pennsbury) claimed first place in the 100 and 200 meter dashes at the CSAC Quad Invitational on Monday. The Pennsbury grad stopped the clock in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.33 seconds while she broke the tape in the 200 meter dash in 25.82 seconds. Freshman Hannah Geiger (Council Rock South) captured first place in the 3000m run while AnaLeeRodriguez (Pennsbury) was second in the shot put and third in the discus. Gwynedd finished second to Keystone College as a team.

Ursinus freshman Chloe Johnson-Hyde (North Penn) finished eighth in the 200-meter dash at the Centennial Conference Outdoor Championships last weekend, posting a time of 27.22.
