BASEBALL
Andy Noga (Cheltenham) tossed a four-hitter and did not allow an earned run in East Stroudsburg’s 7-1 win over Mansfield on Monday. He fanned four and didn’t issue a walk after entering the game ranked second in Division II in fewest walks per nine innings. Noga improved to 6-4 with a 2.42 ERI in his 11th start. He has thrown five complete games and has 51 strikeouts and five walks in 63.1 innings. Teammate Keith Moyer (Souderton) is 3-0 with one save, a 3.46 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 26 innings.
Chestnut Hill’s Alex Latchum (Central Bucks South) was recognized with his honorable mention selection to the CACC All-Conference Team. The junior outfielder, who batted lead-off, hit .327 (16-for-49) with 13 runs scored in the last 12 games. He earned CACC Player of the Week honors on May 2. For the season, Latchum batted .290 (40-for-138) with a .424 on-base percentage. He was the team leader in walks with 25. Latchum also was tied for the team lead in runs (34). He was All-CACC Second Team as a freshman.
Gwynedd-Mercy senior Jay Sechowicz (Council Rock South) was named to the CSAC Honor Roll for the week ending May 8. He started off the week going 2-for-2 with an RBI vs. Misericordia. The senior entered the game as a pinch hitter in the seventh, leading off with a double. He stepped to the plate later in the inning and delivered an RBI single. In the double header on Saturday vs. Philadelphia Biblical, he was a combined 3-for-5 with three runs, two doubles and two RBIs.
Millersville junior Chris Edgar (North Penn) was named to the All-PSAC Eastern Division second team. He was one of the top hitters in the PSAC with a .370 batting average that was second on the team and 11th in the PSAC. Edgar hit .347 against Eastern Division teams with a .412 on-base percentage in league play. His .448 on-base percentage was second on the team, and he was one of four players to drive in at least 30 runs.
Edgar contributed a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning to complete a come-from-behind 7-5 win by Millersville in an elimination game of the PSAC Tournament on Friday. He also had a hit and scored a run in Millersville 8-4 win over California (Pa.) later in the day. The Marauders were eliminated from the tournament when they fell to Mercyhurst 4-2 in 12 innings on Saturday. Millersville earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional and will host the tournament for the first time in school history. The tournament will be held May 20-23.
Eric Kammler (Pennridge) hit a tie-breaking two-run double in the eighth inning as the La Salle baseball team won game one of its twinbill against No. 27 Charlotte 5-3. Earlier in the game, Charlotte put the go-ahead run on third with one out when Kevin Christy (North Penn) entered the game in relief. He got the job done with a pick-off at third and followed with a strikeout to end the inning, setting the stage for Kammler’s heroics in the bottom of the inning. On Friday, Kammler contributed an RBI single in La Salle’s 3-2 loss to #27 Charlotte in 11 innings
Senior Colin Tosti (Neshaminy) put Gwynedd-Mercy on the scoreboard with an RBI double in the eighth inning of Saturday’s 6-3 loss to Keystone in the CSAC Championship Game. Sechowicz followed with an RBI single. Junior Derek Apsche (Pennsbury) also contributed a hit. In Friday’s 6-4 semifinal win over Immaculata, junior John Barrington (Harry S. Truman) struck out 11 in seven-and-a-third innings on the mound while allowing four hits and two runs to earn the win. Teammate John Burns (Neshaminy) contributed a hit and scored a run. Earlier in the day on Friday, Gwynedd downed Neumann 5-4 in an elimination game. In a first round game on Monday, Gwynedd fell to Immaculata 11-10 in 10 innings. Sechowicz had a pair of doubles and finished the game with three hits, one RBI and three runs scored. Burns delivered a solo home run.
Kutztown senior third baseman James Quigley (Bensalem) was named to the 2011 PSAC Eastern Division All-Conference first team. A two-time first team selection, he is one of three players on this year’s Eastern Division team to have been named to an all-conference team three times in their careers. Quigley started at third base in all 39 games for KU. He had 40 hits with 10 doubles and was third on the team with 27 RBIS. He batted .286 with 29 runs scored and a pair of homers. He was third on the team with 13 multi-hit games and had an eight-game hitting streak during the season. Quigley also batted .357 (20-for-56) with runners in scoring position. He had a season-high five RBIs on Feb. 5 against Barton College with a double and a home run. He was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs on April 22 against West Chester. Quigley is a four-year starter for the Golden Bears. He has started in 166 of his 170 games. He had a career batting average of .329. He is sixth on the KU all-time hitting list with 45 doubles and is seventh all-time with 126 RBIs. He had 13 home runs and 183 total hits in his career.
Kutztown sophomore catcher Matt Albaugh (North Penn) was named to the 2011 PSAC Eastern Division All-Conference first team. As the everyday catcher for the Golden Bears, he batted .340 with 36 hits and 18 RBIs. He was tied for third on the team with 10 doubles and had one home run. He had 11 multi-hit games and was second on the team with six multiple-RBI games. Albaugh had three hits with two RBIs in consecutive games against Shippensburg on March 25 and 26.
Julian Faria (Pennsbury) was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored in #15 Alvernia’s 11-0 win over #23 St. John Fisher on Thursday.
Bloomsburg junior Keith Meyer (Council Rock South) was named to the second team All-PSAC East squad. He was selected as a utility player. During the 2011 season, Meyer hit .302 with a homer and 19 RBIs. He was third on the team in runs scored with 29 and also had four doubles and a triple on the season. In a game against nationally-ranked Millersville, Meyer nearly helped the Huskies rally from a 4-0 deficit in the seventh inning when he hit a three-run homer.
In just his second start of the year, Scott Runzer (Council Rock North) allowed three runs in 2.2 innings in Bloomsburg’s 5-3 come-from-behind win over Shippensburg on Saturday to remain alive in the PSAC playoffs. Bloomsburg fell to IUP 7-5 in a second round game on Saturday. Meyer contributed a double. In Wednesday’s 11-6 upset of Slippery Rock in an opening round game of the PSAC Championships, Meyer was 1-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.
MEN’S GOLF
Cabrini freshman Rob Bass (Plymouth Whitemarsh) shot a 10-over par in the opening day of the NCAA Championship in Greensboro, N.C., on Tuesday. Cabrini finished the opening 18 holes tied for 26th in a field of 40 teams. The Cavaliers’ 308 (+20) team score was the program’s best single-day showing at the national championship.
MEN’S LACROSSE
Widener sophomore Johnny Casey (Abington) was named to the first team All-MAC squad. The MAC Rookie of the Year in 2009, Casey came up big on attack after missing most of last year due to injury. He was 10th in the conference with 27 goals, tied for third with 18 assists and tied for fifth with 45 points.
Joe Hughes (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had three ground balls in Cabrini’s 16-9 win over Widener in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday. Casey led Widener with four goals and one assist. Teammate Craig Hunsberger (Pennridge) won 4-of-11 face-offs.
Messiah sophomore Heath Kupecky (Upper Merion) received second team All-MAC honors. The Upper Merion alum scored 23 goals and dished out 17 assists, good enough for second on the team. Kupecky continued his penchant for scoring big goals with none larger than his overtime-ending goal against Elizabethtown College on April 13 that propelled Messiah to an 11-10 victory.
Eastern University senior Matt Mandia (Souderton) was named to the All-MAC first team.  The only senior to see time on the Eastern roster this season, Mandia earned his third straight nod from the league for his role in the Eastern defense. The Eagles held opponents to under six goals per game. That number dropped to nearly five goals per game against league opponents. The captain from Souderton earned Eastern’s Award of Excellence as he helped the Eagles to a 9-2 mark in the league regular season. He led the team with 29 caused turnovers and finished with 58 ground balls.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Jackie Hoover (Cheltenham) scored a pair of goals in West Chester’s 9-8 win over Lock Haven in an NCAA Tournament quarterfinal game on Saturday. With the win, the Golden Rams will advance to their ninth national semifinal in the last 11 years.
Gwynedd-Mercy saw its season come to a close when it fell to top-ranked TCNJ in a first-round game of the 2011 NCAA Tournament. Gwynedd was outshot 21-4 in the game. Senior Colleen Dellostretto (Upper Moreland) had three of the four shots.
Junior Rachel Dirksen (Abington) contributed three goals and three assists in #12 Messiah College’s 14-7 win over Denison in a first round game of the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday. She also had two ground balls and three draw controls. Teammate Rachel Coyle (Souderton) added three ground balls and two draw controls. Messiah saw its season come to an end on Saturday when the Falcons fell to #6 Franklin and Marshall 7-4 in a second round NCAA Tournament game. The loss snapped a 14-game winning streak for the Falcons. Dirksen scored a single goal while Coyle was credited with two ground balls and two draw controls. Messiah closed its season with an 18-2 record.
SOFTBALL
Mount St. Mary’s Courtney Zingle (Hatboro-Horsham) was named to the All-Northeast Conference second team. The senior outfielder earned her first all-conference recognition after leading the team in batting average (.338), hits (50), doubles (10) and total bases (69) while ranking second in RBIs (25), second in home runs (3) and fourth in runs scored (18). Zingle paced the team with 15 multi-hit performances and posted six multi-RBI games, including registering three RBIs in an 11-6 win against Quinnipiac on April 2 and three RBIs in both ends of a doubleheader against Saint Francis (Pa.) to help the Mountaineers to a sweep on April 17. Zingle ended her career at the Mount second in at-bats (571), third in RBIs (86), third in games played (190), fourth in runs scored (88), sixth in doubles (27), sixth in home runs (10) and third in total bases (222). Mount St. Mary’s finished 15-31 overall and 5-15 in NEC play.
Junior Samantha Schoell (North Penn) was 2-for-4 in Temple’s 9-5 win over Dayton in a second round game of the Atlantic 10 Tournament on Wednesday in Charlotte, N.C. Temple, which had fallen to Charlotte in the opener, was eliminated from the tournament when the Owls fell to Charlotte 3-1 on Thursday.
Arcadia senior Ashley McCarthy (Norristown) started all 146 games played during her collegiate career. The senior second baseman finished her four-year career with a .929 fielding percentage with 292 putouts and 192 assists. At the plate, she batted .245, producing 53 runs and 46 RBIs off of 93 hits with 10 of those hits doubles. She also walked 42 times and was 15-for-20 on stolen base attempts. She enjoyed her most productive season at the plate in 2011. As a Health and Administration major, McCarthy also was a dual-sport student-athlete, competing the last three fall seasons as the defensive leader and tri-captain of Arcadia’s field hockey team. In 2009, McCarthy was selected to the All-Commonwealth Conference Second Team for field hockey.
Deanna Dungee (North Penn) threw two scoreless innings in Alvernia’s 4-0 loss to Misericordia on Sunday in the final elimination game of the ECAC South Region Softball Championships hosted by Alvernia at Angelica Park. In Wednesday’s 5-0 quarterfinal win over Marywood, Dungee threw a one-two-three seventh to close out the game.
Moira Johnsen (Council Rock North) was 1-for-3 in Shippensburg’s 2-1 loss to #10 Bloomsburg in an NCAA Tournament opening round game on Friday.
Freshman Kaitlyn Schilling (Pennsbury) tossed a three-hit shutout to lead California (Pa.) to a 3-0 win over Winston-Salem State in an NCAA Tournament game on Sunday. Schilling fanned seven and walked one while improving to 10-6 on the season. California was eliminated from the tournament later in the day after falling to Kutztown 4-3. The Vulcans were 29-14 on the season.
Junior Heather Hannum (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed a hit in Kutztown’s 3-2 win over California (Pa.) in an NCAA Tournament opening round game on Friday. Erin Holloway (Souderton) earned the win on the mound in IUP’s 2-1 win over Kutztown in an NCAA Tournament game on Saturday. The senior mound ace, who improved to 24-3, allowed three hits while walking one and striking out eight. The win was her eighth straight in postseason play and her 100th complete game for IUP. She also increased her school-record totals to 74 wins and 974 strikeouts, the latter figure ranking her third in PSAC history. As a result of inclement weather, the championship game – pitting IUP against Kutztown – has been postponed until Monday morning. IUP, which has not lost in the tournament, needs just one win to advance to the Super Regional while Kutztown must defeat IUP twice to advance. In Friday’s opening round 7-0 win over Winston-Salem State, Holloway struck out eight and walked three in posting her 10th shutout of the season and 31st of her career. Teammate Dee Eppinger (North Penn) had a pair of hits and scored three runs in the win.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Junior Keith Ogden (Cheltenham) led Millersville with two top three finishes at the 2011 PSAC Outdoor Championships. Ogden improved his 400-meter hurdles time in the finals when he placed second in the race with a time of 52.81 seconds to earn eight points for the Marauders. Ogden’s time was an NCAA provisional qualifying time. He also was part of the men’s 4x100-meter relay team that placed third in the finals to earn All-PSAC honors with a time of 42.16 seconds. Chris Jackson (Plymouth Whitemarsh) also was part of the relay team.  One day earlier during a preliminary heat, the relay team broke the school record of 41.93 with a finish in 41.82 seconds. Chris Wallace (North Penn) finished seventh in the triple jump with a distance of 13.56 meters.
Millersville junior Zac Kohler (Pennridge) finished seventh in the high jump with a leap of 1.92 meters. On Friday, Kohler had a career day with his fourth place finish in the decathlon. Kohler’s 6,082 total points was a personal best and placed him fifth all-time in Millersville history.
Lock Haven’s Steve Roberts (Quakertown) finished second in the 400-meter run at the 2011 PSAC Championships with a NCAA provisional mark of 47.91.
Paul Reilly (Upper Dublin) was part of La Salle’s 4x800-meter relay that was named GoExplorers.com Co-Student Athletes of the Week for their gold-medal winning performances at the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Lock Haven’s Vanita Moses (Neshhaminy) finished second in the women’s hammer throw at the 2011 PSAC Championships with a mark of 168-09. It was a season-best and NCAA provisional throw. She also finished fifth in the shot put with a mark of 39-06.00. Teammate Christina Ohmott (Hatboro-Horsham) finished sixth in the pole vault with a mark of 11-2.
American University graduate student Erin Koch (Pennridge) has been named the 2011 Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, an award recognizing both her academic and athletic accomplishments. Koch maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA in her first year in the College of Arts and Sciences graduate program where she is pursuing her masters in mathematics. She earned her undergraduate degree in mathematics in May 2010 and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 3.91 GPA. Koch also was awarded the Hanna Miriam Sandler Scholarship last year, an honor intended to support either research in mathematics or research in mathematics education involving the teaching of college-level mathematics. The Pennridge alum is a six-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selection and was named to the Academic All-Patriot League for both cross country and indoor track. Koch enjoyed a stellar campaign on the track. Last weekend she placed second in the 1,500-meter run at the Patriot League Championships to earn All-Patriot League Second Team honors, while also placing third in the 800-meter run with the second-fastest time in school history (2:09.86). Koch has broken the school record in the 1,500-meter twice this season, most recently posting a time of 4:22.56 at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 14. She ranks second on the school’s all-time top 10 list in the 400-meter dash, 800-meter run and 3,000-meter run. Earlier this year, Koch was named to the All-Patriot Second Team for cross country and indoor track and set a new school record of 4:46.19 in the indoor mile.
