BASEBALL
For the second straight year, La Salle advanced to the Atlantic 10 championship, which begins Wednesday afternoon at Campbell’s Field in Camden, N.J. The Explorers clinched the No. 6 seed in the upcoming conference tournament and will play No. 3 Dayton in the opening round at 3:30 p.m. On Friday, the Explorers dropped a pair to Saint Louis. In La Salle’s 6-4 loss in game one, Jon Gyles (Central Bucks West) was 2-for-5 while Adam Kammler (Pennridge) led the Explorers with a 3-for-4 effort that included one RBI and a run scored. Zach Huff (Pennridge) worked a scoreless inning in relief. In the Explorers’ 5-4 loss in game two, Gyles was 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored while Kammler was 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Kevin Christy (North Penn) tossed four scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit while walking none and striking out four. In Thursday’s 3-0 win over Saint Louis, Gyles contributed an RBI single.
Robbie Zinsmeister (North Penn) turned in a perfect 5-for-5 effort in IUP's 6-4 win over Bloomsburg on May 13 that propelled the Crimson Hawks into the PSAC title game. Included in the sophomore shortstop's five hits were a double, triple and three singles. He also scored a run and contributed one RBI. IUP fell to Mercyhurst in the title game.
For just the second time in Millersville’s 115 seasons of baseball, the team is heading to the NCAA Atlantic Region Championship game. The 10th-ranked Marauders overcame an early deficit to defeat No. 17 Mercyhurst 8-5 on Sunday at Clipper Magazine Stadium in Lancaster. Chris Edgar (North Penn), who plays right field and bats second for the Marauders, scored a run in the big win. In Saturday’s 5-3 win over Seton Hill, Edgar jump-started a Marauder rally in the bottom of the sixth with a single down the right field line. Millersville scored three runs in the inning to turn a 3-2 deficit into a two-run lead. Edgar led the Marauders with two hits and two runs scored. On Friday, Edgar was 1-for-2 with two RBIs in Millersville’s 3-1 win over Concord. Edgar, an outfielder, received honorable mention All-PSAC East recognition. He ranks second on the team in hitting with a .360 batting average, and his on-base percentage ranks second on the team as well.
Andy Noga (Cheltenham) surrendered just four hits in his first seven innings of work in a winner’s bracket game against Mercyhurst in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional on Saturday at Clipper Magazine Stadium in Lancaster, but Mercyhurst scored three runs in the eighth inning to earn the 4-1 win. Noga threw his sixth complete game of the season for the Warriors, allowing four runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts and no walks while tying the school record with 12 starts in a single season. The Division II leader in fewest walks in nine innings, Noga didn’t issue a walk for the eighth time in his 12 starts. He has a 6-5 record, 2.61 ERA, 58 strikeouts and five walks in a team-high 72.1 innings this season. The Warriors saw their season come to an end when they fell to Mercyhurst 4-2 in an elimination game on Sunday. Freshman Keith Moyer (Souderton) threw two scoreless innings in relief, allowing two hits while walking two and striking out four.
Penn State Abington received the No. 6 seed in the 2011 ECAC Division 3 South Baseball Championship. In Saturday’s opening round game, the Nittany Lions fell to La Roche College 9-1, bringing an end to their season.  It is the first time the PSU Abington baseball team competed in the ECAC Tournament. Tom Boyd (Council Rock South) and Kevin Szafranski (Bensalem) both had a hit in the game while Michael Corrigan (William Tennent) contributed an RBI. Other SOL alums playing for Penn State Abington included Will Erskine (North Penn), Kevin Kail (William Tennent), Brian Camp (Cheltenham), Henry Rosenbloom (Cheltenham), Robert Morak (Abington) and Mark McCoach (Hatboro-Horsham).

WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Jackie Hoover (Cheltenham) scored three goals in No. 6 West Chester’s 10-9 loss to No. 3 Limestone in a semifinal game of the 2011 NCAA Division II Women’s Lacrosse Tournament on Saturday. It was West Chester’s first national semifinal loss in nine tries.
SOFTBALL
IUP will be making its first ever appearance in the College World Series, thanks to the heroics of the three SOL alums during the Crimson Hawks’ run through the NCAA Division II Atlantic Super Regional this weekend. World Series play begins May 26 in Salem, Va., with the Crimson Hawks taking on a North Georgia squad that boasts a 52-10 record and won the Southeast Super Regional in three games over Lenoir-Rhyne. In Saturday’s title game, freshman third baseman Mary Ward (North Penn) slammed a two-run home run over the fence in center with one out in the top of the seventh inning to give IUP a dramatic 2-1 win over Bloomsburg. It was her third and biggest home run of the season. Erin Holloway (Souderton) finished off Bloomsburg with a one-two-three seventh, winning her 27th game of the season against only three losses, including all 11 postseason victories. The senior righthander, who was named to the 2011 NFCA All-Atlantic Region First Team, struck out four and walked one and moved within seven of 1,000 career strikeouts with at least two more games remaining. Holloway also moved within one win of matching her IUP season record of 28 set a year ago. In addition to the school career strikeout record, she holds IUP marks for wins (78), complete games (103), shutouts (32) and innings pitched (790 2/3).  The win gave IUP (38-6) its 11th win in as many postseason games, extending the team’s winning streak to 13 overall and enabled the Crimson Hawks to match the school record for wins in a season which was accomplished last year when IUP finished 28-12. Bloomsburg, the defending region champion, finished its season with a record of 33-9. The Crimson Hawks defeated the Huskies twice in 24 hours this weekend after posting only four wins in 59 all-time meetings entering the Super Regional.  On Friday, with IUP down to its final out, it was Dee Eppinger (North Penn) stealing the spotlight when she delivered a two-run single to propel IUP to a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Bloomsburg in the opening game of the best-of-three series. With first base open and runners on second and third, Bloomsburg coach Susan Kocher opted to pitch to Eppinger, who already had two hits in the game, including a double in the sixth. With a 2-2 count, Eppinger lined a base hit between shortstop and left field to score both runners. The Huskies plated single runs in the first and fifth off Holloway, who allowed five hits, struck out seven and walked one. Earlier in the week, Holloway fired a one-hitter to lead IUP to a 5-0 victory over Kutztown in Monday’s championship game of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region I Tournament. She walked two and struck out eight. Eppinger was 1-for-4 with a run scored while Ward, who was 0-for-1, scored a run.
Third baseman Lauren Rossi (Pennsbury) contributed an RBI single in Penn State’s 6-1 win over Albany on Saturday. Penn State defeated Fordham 5-2 later in the day to earn a spot in the NCAA Regional Final for the first time since 2006. In Sunday’s Regional Final, the Nittany Lions (34-24-1) fell to Oregon 3-1.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Millersville’s Keith Ogden (Cheltenham) earned All-Atlantic Region honors in the 400-meter hurdles. Ogden currently is second all-time in Millersville history in the event after running the 400 in a time of 52.81 seconds. He placed second at the PSAC Outdoor Championships to earn All-PSAC honors. He also earned All-PSAC honors in the men’s 4x100-meter relays, helping his team place third in the PSAC Championships. The relay team broke the school record in the preliminary race with a time of 41.82 seconds.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Lock Haven’s Vanita Moses (Neshaminy) earned All-Region honors in the hammer throw. Moses finished second in that event at the PSAC Championships. This is the first time the USTFCCCA has announced All-Region honorees for outdoor track and field in Division II. The top five from each region in individual events and each member of a relay ranked in the region’s top three have earned the All-Region distinction for the 2011 outdoor season.
