BASEBALL
Senior Jamie Abercrombie (Hatboro-Horsham) had an RBI single in Temple’s 10-6 loss to Lafayette on Wednesday. On Tuesday, Abercrombie had a pair of hits, including his 17th double of the season, in Temple’s 7-6 loss to Villanova.
Senior Mark Angelo (Quakertown) finished his baseball career at East Stroudsburg with PSAC East Player of the Week honors after hitting .750 with five home runs in the Warriors’ series with Mansfield the preceding weekend. Angelo was 9-for-12 and homered in all four games of the series for the Warriors to close one of the top offensive seasons in school history. He had nine RBIs and nine runs and posted a .706 on-base percentage and 2.000 slugging percentage for the weekend. He also drew two walks, was hit by a pitch and hit two sacrifice flies.
For the season, Angelo set the school record with 136 total bases and tied four others. His 77 hits are tied with Brett Reynolds (2000), and he shares records for doubles (21), home runs (12) and extra-base hits (34). His 12 home runs are tied for sixth on ESU’s career list despite playing just one year for the Warriors. He was a three-year letter winner and All-Patriot League selection at Bucknell as a senior and used his final year of eligibility at ESU as a graduate student in Secondary Education and Mathematics. He helped lead the Warriors to 32 wins, the most in school history.
BASKETBALL
East Stroudsburg senior Chris Bach (Harry S. Truman) was a recipient of the Winter Top 10 Award by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The Top 10 Awards, selected by the PSAC’s sports information directors, recognize five female and five male student-athletes each season who distinguish themselves in the classroom as well as in the arena of competition. Bach is the first ESU basketball player in school history to earn ESPN The Magazine All-America honors. Bach was a Top 10 recipient last winter. A graduate student in Exercise Science with a 3.82 GPA as an undergraduate in Sport Management, Bach was a two-time All-PSAC East selection and averaged 19 points and 9.1 rebounds per game as a senior. He was president of ESU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, represented ESU at last year’s NCAA Leadership Conference and delivered the keynote address at ESU’s National Student-Athlete Day Celebration and the Athletic Awards Banquet.
GOLF
Sophomore Chris Delaney (Norristown) tied for 12th with a 165, helping Widener to a fourth place finish at the Commonwealth Conference Championships.
MEN’S LACROSSE
Freshman Johnny Casey (Abington) who has 39 goals this season, scored a pair of goals in Widener’s 10-7 win over Eastern in the first round of the MAC Tournament on Monday. Widener went on to defeat Lycoming 19-17 in Wednesday’s semifinal and topped #1 Messiah 10-6 on Saturday to capture its 11th Middle Atlantic Conference Tournament title. It is the fourth straight conference crown for Widener, which advanced to the NCAA Division 3 Tournament. The Pride will travel to 12th ranked Dennison for Wednesday’s opening round game.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
St. Joe’s University freshman Julie Mineweaser (North Penn) was named to the Atlantic-10’s All-Rookie squad. A midfielder, Mineweaser started all 18 games for the Hawks, who advanced to the A-10 championship game for the first time in school history. The Hawks fell to UMass 15-14 in overtime. Mineweaser, who scored a goal in the title game, closed out the season with 16 goals, 10 assists, 29 ground balls, 24 draw controls and 16 caused turnovers.
Sophomore Michelle Mangiaruga (North Penn) was named to the first team All-PSAC East lacrosse squad. She was the Warriors’ leading scorer after returning from a season-ending injury last year. Mangiaruga scored 47 goals, the sixth most in school history, and has scored three or more goals in 14 of the first 24 games of her career. She had 15 goals and seven assists in seven games as a freshman before going down with an injury. She had two five-goal games among her 10 hat tricks and was second on the team with 12 assists.
The University of Pennsylvania is the fourth seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. The Quakers have earned an opening round date with Fairfield on Sunday, May 10, at Drexel’s Vidas Field. Senior Becca Edwards (Springfield) and junior Courtney Lubbe (Council Rock) have started all 15 games this season for Penn. Lubbe is second on the team with 26 goals to go along with 15 assists, 21 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers. Edwards has 20 goals and 10 assists as well as 20 ground balls and 20 draw controls. The Quakers were upset by 13th ranked Stanford 8-6 on Saturday.
Jenny Collins (North Penn), a redshirt junior, scored a pair of goals in the University of Maryland’s 20-12 win over Princeton on Saturday. The win capped a perfect regular season for the second-ranked Terps.
Freshmen Sara Ciaverelli (North Penn) and Ali Herman (North Penn) started all 16 games for the LaSalle University lacrosse squad this season. Ciaverelli, a midfielder, scored three goals and was credited with 16 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers. Herman is also a midfielder, and she closed out the season with a team-high 16 assists. She also was credited with 11 ground balls, 16 draw controls and six caused turnovers.
Senior Stephanie Jordan (Souderton) was named to the 2008 Chestnut Hill College All-Academic Team. Student-athletes are recognized who maintained a GPA of 3.6 or higher while participating in an intercollegiate varsity sport at Chestnut Hill in the spring or fall of 2008.
Bloomsburg senior Sam Alexander (Upper Moreland) received first team All-PSAC East honors after being named a second team selection as a freshman in 2006. Alexander finished third on the team in goals with 35 and fourth in total points with 43. She led the team with 54 draw controls, had 39 ground balls and 14 caused turnovers. She also scored five goals in a game on three occasions. She finished her career with 103 goals and 22 assists for 125 points.
SOFTBALL
St. Joseph University junior Brooke Derreff (Central Bucks South) closed out the regular season with a .391 batting average, tops among Hawks regulars. She had an on-base percentage of .457 and a slugging percentage of .582, finishing the regular season with nine doubles, four home runs and 29 RBIs. The 2008 A-10 Player of the Year, Derreff started 40 of 41 games for the Hawks, mainly at catcher. Her fielding percentage was a dazzling .990 as she committed just two errors in the regular season. The Hawks (23-18) have earned a spot in this week’s A-10 Tournament.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Widener junior James Green (North Penn), last spring’s Field Athlete of the Meet, repeated as shot put champion at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships by tossing 15.50 meters to break the track record and provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
East Stroudsburg senior Katherine Doyle (Central Bucks West) won the 100m dash in 12.66 seconds at the Kutztown Invitational on Friday night. Doyle was part of the 4x400m relay team that finished fifth. Kayla Littrell (William Tennent) finished fourth in the 400m run (1:03.80) and fifth in the 200m dash (27.72).
Doyle posted a victory in the 400m with a season-best time of 58.06 at the Lehigh Invitational on April 27. Littrell was part of the victorious 4x400 relay team. Kristen Morby (Central Bucks West) finished in a tie for sixth in the pole vault (9-6 ¼).
Widener junior Nikita Halteman (North Penn) duplicated her shot put triumph from the indoor championships by winning first place with a toss of 11.87 meters at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships on Friday.
