BASEBALL
Adam Kammler (Pennridge) had a career-high three hits in LaSalle’s 10-8 loss to Saint Louis on Saturday. Chris Umstead (Pennridge) contributed an RBI double. Kevin Christy (North Penn) worked 4.2 innings, allowing six hits, six runs (four earned) while walking four and striking out six. His 68 strikeouts for the season are tied for the fifth most in a single season at LaSalle. In LaSalle’s 7-5 win over Saint Louis on Friday, Jon Gyles (Central Bucks West) and Chris Umstead (Pennridge) both contributed RBI singles. Eric Kammler (Pennridge) scored a pair of runs.
Sophomore Joe Crane (Council Rock South) had a pair of hits in Chestnut Hill’s 7-4 loss to Felician College in an opening round contest of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference playoffs on Wednesday. The team closed its season with a 16-22 record overall. The Griffins were 11-9 in conference play. Mike Knipe (Pennridge) had 21 RBIs during the regular season for the Griffins. Teammate Justin Wiercinski (Hatboro-Horsham) was one of four pitchers to make at least 10 appearances – the four hurlers combined for a 2.10 earned run average.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Temple junior Lavoy Allen (Pennsbury) officially withdrew his name from consideration for the 2010 NBA Draft. In doing so, the 6-9 forward retains his final year of college eligibility and returns to the Owls for the 2010-11 season. A first team all-Atlantic 10 Conference and USBWA All-District performer, Allen became the first Temple player to average a double-double since Ollie Johnson accomplished the feat in 1970-71, averaging 11.5 points and 10.7 rebounds per games as a junior in 2009-10. He led the team in rebounding, blocks (50) and field goal percentage (.536) while ranking third with 83 assists. He became the 46th player to surpass the 1,000-point mark when he scored 12 points in Temple’s 70-57 win over George Washington on March 3. Allen, who shared team MVP honors with Ryan Brooks, helped the Owls to a 29-6 record and a third straight A-10 championship. Temple was ranked #12 in the final Associated Press poll.
East Stroudsburg senior Robby Pines (Souderton) shared the team’s MVP award for the 2009-10 season. The senior point guard played a key role in ESU’s school-record 76 wins over the last four years.
FOOTBALL
Matt Freed (Souderton) was named MVP of East Stroudsburg University’s football team at the 2010 Athletic Awards Banquet last Sunday.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Senior Jenny Collins (North Penn) scored a goal in No. 1 Maryland’s 17-6 rout of No. 12 Dartmouth on Senior Day Saturday. With the win, Maryland capped its 12th perfect regular season in program history. The Terps have held 17 of 19 opponents to 10 or fewer goals.
Mercy College freshman Lauren Mateja (Upper Merion) was named the East Coast Conference Goalkeeper of the Week for the week ending May 2, 2010. The Mavericks won both games last week, beating Wilmington 10-9 and St. Thomas Aquinas 18-8. In the two games combined, Mateja made 20 saves with a .541 save percentage. She allowed just 8.5 goals per game. Against Wilmington, she made 12 saves, several of which were stuffs in front of the crease. She then made eight stops against STAC. This is the second time Mateja has earned this award. She also claimed the honor on March 8. The Mavericks are 8-5 on the season (3-3 in the ECC).

Temple junior Tracy Zimmer (Council Rock North) was named to the Atlantic 10 first team all-conference squad. She is a defender. Teammate Chelsea Rosiek (Wissahickon) earned second team honors. The senior attack player scored 22 goals and had 22 assists in 14 games. Freshman Charlotte Swavola (Cheltenham) was named to the third team. She scored 13 goals and had one assist in 13 games for the Owls.
Jamie Wesztergom (Springfield)was named MVP of East Stroudsburg University’s lacrosse team at the 2010 Athletic Awards Banquet last Sunday. Junior Michelle Mangiaruga (North Penn) earned her second straight selection to the first team all-PSAC East squad. She followed her 47-goal, 12-assist season in 2009 with 40 goals and 17 assists this season despite missing two games during the season due to injury. She has averaged 2.5 goals per game during her first three years at ESU. Freshman Jennifer Kelly (Abington) started all 14 games in which she appeared as a freshman, ranking second on the team with 21 caused turnovers and contributing 33 groundballs and 10 draw controls. She was often asked to mark the opponent’s top player and had a career-high four caused turnovers against nationally ranked West Chester, the PSAC East regular season champion.
Lock Haven’s Allison Berger (Springfield) was named to the All-PSAC West first team. She leads the team in total points with 90, which includes 41 goals and 49 assists. She’s second in the PSAC in points-per-game with 5.29, which is also seventh best in all of Division II. Berger is ranked sixth in the country in assists.
Shippensburg’s Gayle Kuntzmann (Hatboro-Horsham) was named to the all-PSAC Eastern Division first team for the third consecutive year. The senior midfielder was ranked second in the PSAC for caused turnovers and fourth in the nation, averaging 2.69 per contest and totaling 43 overall. She scored 33 goals in 16 games, including three game-winners, averaged 2.94 groundballs per game (47 overall) to rank 37th in Division II and also led the team with 35 draw controls.
SOFTBALL
Amanda Sadowl (Hatboro-Horsham) allowed one run on nine hits in Mount St. Mary’s 8-1 win over Fairleigh Dickinson last Saturday. The win was her 13th of the year, one shy of the single-season program record. Sadowl moved into sixth place for appearances on the year (30) and seventh with 17 career wins.  Beth Everist (North Penn) contributed a solo home run in the game. In last Saturday’s doubleheader (Fairleigh Dickinson won the nightcap 5-4), Everist had four hits, five RBIs and a run scored. She moved into third place in homers (8), sixth in RBIs (31) and seventh in total bases (70) on the single-season list. Courtney Zingle (Hatboro-Horsham) moved into 10th place in hits in a single season (44) while cracking the program’s top 10 list in career hits (115) and at-bats (420).
Kutztown senior pitcher Kaitlin Arbogast (Wissahickon) was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division pitcher of the year for the second consecutive season. On Tuesday, she was honored during the annual Lehigh Valley Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women. The senior hurler won 24 games and had a 2.10 earned run average. She was third in the PSAC this season with 243 strikeouts. She became the first player in school history to strike out 1,000 batters in her career. Perhaps the most decorated pitcher in Kutztown history, Arbogast holds school records in strikeouts, wins (97), games (162), saves (eight), complete games (98), shutouts (28) and innings pitched (904). Kutztown claimed a share of the PSAC East title along with West Chester. The Golden Bears (41-16) are expected to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region tournament.
IUP junior pitcher Erin Holloway (Souderton) received first team all-PSAC Central honors. She is a three-time all-conference selection, including twice on the first team. She has already set the school career strikeout record with 734 and ranks third with 48 wins and 94 appearances. She is tied for second with 20 shutouts and fourth in starts with 81 and complete games with 69 and innings pitched with 545 1/3. IUP has won 35 games this season - tied for the school record first set in 2001 – against only 10 losses. The team will find out on Monday where it will play in the NCAA Atlantic Region Tournament. IUP will be making its seventh appearance in the NCAA Tournament and first since 2005.
University of Maine first baseman Kirstin Allen (Central Bucks West) split the gold glove award with teammate Terren Hall. The awards were presented at the team’s annual banquet last Saturday night.
Pam DelPizzo (Central Bucks South) contributed an RBI double in Elon’s 8-6 win in nine innings over Winthrop on Saturday. Elon won both ends of the doubleheader, downing Winthrop 6-3 in game one. The Phoenix finished the regular season with an overall record of 35-19. Elon will be back in action on Thursday in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Nicole Koren (William Tennent) was one of three University of Virginia seniors honored before last Saturday’s final home series against No. 22 Florida State. Virginia split the doubleheader with Florida State, winning game one 2-1 and falling in game two 9-6. Koren delivered the big blow in the 2-1 win, hitting a two-run homer in the fourth inning to lift the Cavaliers to the win. It was her 12th home run of the season. She has recorded 12 home runs for the past two seasons and needs one more to tie Kirsten Dennis for the single season record. With the win, the Cavaliers (33-19, 13-6 ACC) clinched second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings.  In game two, Koren also had a hit and an RBI.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Katie Hasyn (North Penn) was part of Bloomsburg’s second doubles team that earned a 9-7 win in the second-seeded Huskies to a 5-0 win over third-seeded West Virginia Wesleyan in semifinal action of the NCAA Division II Atlantic 2 Regional women’s tennis tournament.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Widener’s James Green (North Penn) won the shot put for the third straight year at the Middle Atlantic Championships on Friday with a throw of 49-10.
East Stroudsburg’s Alfred McHanley (Cheltenham) finished sixth in the triple jump at the Elliston Invitational last Saturday with a jump of 44-10 ¾.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Shippensburg junior sprinter Laura Henzy (Neshaminy) was honored with the Jack A. Mildred Prince Squires Scholarship through the John L. Grove College of Business. The award, open to all seniors within the college, is a full year’s tuition. Henzy is majoring in supply chain management while seeking a minor in mathematics. She has qualified for the 400-meter dash and 4x400-meter relay at the upcoming PSAC Track and Field Championships. The Neshaminy grad has twice been named an All-American in the 4x400-meter relay and holds school records in both the indoor and outdoor versions of that event. In all, Henzy has been a 12-time PSAC place-winner and has earned all-PSAC honors five times. Following last year’s outdoor track and field season, Henzy was named a member of the 2009 USTFCCCA All-Academic Team. She also holds a 3.81 GPA.
East Stroudsburg’s Kayla Littrell (William Tennent) finished fifth in the 200m with a time of 28.77 in a meet held at Kutztown on Saturday. Last Saturday, Littrell finished 10th at the Elliston Invitational with a time of 28.67.
Lock Haven’s Vanita Moses (Neshaminy) won the hammer throw at the Lock Haven University Qualifier on Saturday with a mark of 147-02.
Widener senior Nikita Halteman (North Penn) was named the Women’s Field Athlete of the Year at the Middle Atlantic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday. Freshman Darcela Llanos (Abington) won the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.92 seconds.
