BASEBALL
Eric Ruth (North Penn) recently signed with the New York Yankees organization and has reported to Tampa to play in the Gulf Coast League. Ruth recently completed his senior season at Winthrop University where he finished the year with a 3-0 record and 10 saves. His 0.43 earned run average was second lowest in the Big South Conference.
Craig Lepre (North Penn) is playing for the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs of the Perfect Game Summer Collegiate League in upstate New York. The team is 8-8 and in fourth place in its division. Craig is batting .262 after going 4-for-11 this weekend with a double and three RBIs. He is splitting the catching duties and recently earned a spot in the lineup as designated hitter when he is not catching. Lepre recently completed his sophomore season at the University of Albany.
MEN’S GOLF
La Salle junior Mike Johnson (Hatboro-Horsham) was named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area team in voting conducted by the city’s 28 sports information offices. Johnson led the Explorers for the third straight year with a 75.1 stroke average and shot a 74-73-71=218 (+2) to finish 19th at the Atlantic 10 Championship. The 54-hole score of 218 tied a school record for a La Salle player at the A-10 Championship. The Hatboro alum also won the Saint Peter’s Invitational with an even-par 72 and was second at the Rhody Invitational (76-77=153). Johnson carries a 3.27 GPA as an accounting major.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
St. Joseph’s University junior Brittany Hanrahan (North Penn) was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Conference second team. Hanrahan captained the defensive unit that ranked in the nation’s top ten in scoring defense for the majority of the 2013 season. She started all 16 games and ranked third on the team in ground balls (26) to help lead the Hawks to a third place finish in the A-10 team ground ball category. Hanrahan recorded three or more ground balls in four games on the season, including eight in St. Joe’s 16-13 win over Saint Mary’s on March 22. Hanrahan also led the team in caused turnovers (17), forcing three to go along with three ground balls in conference action against Temple on March 29.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Monmouth University freshman Tevin Kirby-Stewart (Hatboro-Horsham) finished 12th in the men’s shot put at the USA Junior National Championships last Thursday at Drake University. Kirby-Stewart, a Northeast Conference All-Rookie Team selection in the shot put, recorded his best throw of 53’8.5” (16.06m) on his first attempt.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Justin Brubaker (Souderton) recently completed playing professional volleyball for the Falkenberg Volleyball Club in Sweden. After an All-American career at Cairn University, Brubaker earned MVP honors when his Leeds-Carnegie squad won the England Cup in the spring of 2012. While playing in Sweden, he earned MVP honors in eight matches and was named MVP of the Grand Prix Tournament, the midseason tournament for the eight teams that comprise the professional league in Sweden. At the end of the season, Brubaker’s Falkenberg squad rolled through the quarterfinals and semifinals without a loss before falling in four matches in the championship round. Brubaker, the lone American on his squad, was one of the league’s elite players, finishing fifth in serving and serve receiving. He was seventh in points scored and was eighth in hitting percentage. Brubaker hopes this is another step toward reaching his goal of one day playing in the CEV Champions League, the highest level competition for volleyball clubs in Europe.
