BASEBALL

La Salle senior Kevin Christy (North Penn) built on his success of 2011 in the Far West League this summer. While pitching for the Atwater Aviators, Christy compiled a perfect 6-0 record with a 1.00 ERA. In 39.2 innings pitched, he allowed just 20 hits while striking out 27. Opponents batted .188 off Christy, who is making a bid to be a starter after being used exclusively as a reliever and set-up man for the Explorers last season. Christy took a no-hitter into the ninth inning of his July 6 start for the Aviators.

IUP junior Robbie Zinsmeister (North Penn) was named the inaugural Futures Collegiate Baseball League Most Valuable Player. Zinsmeister, who played in every game for the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks, hit .326 with 56 hits, which was good for second in the league. Included in his 56 hits were 10 doubles, three triples and nine home runs. He also stole 25 bases in 29 attempts, which led the league by nine. His final line included 26 RBIs, which was fifth in the league and came out of the lead-off spot.

Chestnut Hill sophomore third baseman Ray Puskar (Pennridge) participated in the 2011 Atlantic Baseball Confederation Collegiate League (ABCCL) All-Star Game. His earned his selection to the ABCCL Summer Classic with a .345 (19-for-55) batting average and 12 runs scored in 27 games with the Protocall Starz. Puskar led the Starz to an 18-11-1 record and a second place finish in the ABCCL regular season with a team-high in batting average and on-base percentage (.532). Puskar’s .345 batting average was good enough for 10th in the league for those players logging at least 13 games. He totaled 19 hits – 18 of them singles – and 19 walks to help him record 12 runs, seven RBIs and four stolen bases. As a freshman at Chestnut Hill, Puskar hit .242 (16-for-66) with six runs scored and nine RBIs. He made 19 starts, primarily playing third base and left field, while appearing in 23 games.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Recent Princeton grad Addie Micir (Council Rock North) has signed a professional contract with Residence De Walferdange of the Luxembourg-Diekirch League. The team reached the Luxembourg Cup semifinals in 2011 and was the Cup winners in 2009. Residence begins its season in October. Micir graduated from Princeton in May with a degree in psychology. She was the unanimous selection for 2011 Ivy League Player of the Year, making her the first player in Princeton history to receive the honor. A four-year starter, she is the ninth all-time scorer at Princeton with 1,188 points. In addition, she is the best free throw shooter in Princeton history, sinking 81.8 percent of her shots. She ranks second all-time in three-point field goal percentage at 41.5 percent. The team captain and leading scorer during the 2010-11 season, Micir led the league in three’s made and assist/turnover ratio, finishing third in assists, sixth in field goal percentage and ninth in scoring. She was named All-Ivy three times in her career. The Tigers were 7-23 her freshman year, but Micir helped the Tigers post a 50-8 record during the last two seasons, including a 27-1 Ivy League record and back-to-back Ivy League championships. Princeton also made its first two trips to the NCAA Tournament, and the team earned the Ivy League’s two best seeds in its history.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Senior Nick Crits (Wissahickon) is one of the top returners on a La Salle squad picked to finish first in the Atlantic 10. The Explorers return the majority of their starting roster from a 2010 squad that saw the men place fifth at the Atlantic 10 Championship.

FIELD HOCKEY

Julia Rush (Quakertown) was one of 98 Bloomsburg University student-athletes named a 2010-11 PSAC Scholar Athlete.  To be recognized, a student-athlete must produce a minimum 3.25 GPA during the school year. Across the entire PSAC, there were a total of 2,038 scholar-athletes out of 6,338 total student-athletes.

FOOTBALL

West Chester sophomore place-kicker Shawn Leo (Souderton) was named to the Fred Mitchell Award preseason watch list. It is Leo’s second straight appearance on the list. He is one of 20 Division II place-kickers on the list and only one of 11 sophomores. The Fred Mitchell Award selection committee trims a list of over 400 place-kickers across the country down to 50 for its preseason watch list. Leo is coming off a 2010 campaign that saw him convert a school single-season record 9-of-10 field goal opportunities, including three from longer than 40 yards out. Leo finished second on the tem in scoring with 63 points, making 36 of 38 extra-point tries as well. He tied a school single-game record with three field goals in West Chester’s 44-43 double-overtime victory over Shippensburg. Two of his three field goals came from further than 40 yards out, including a 42-yarder with 25 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to tie the game and send it into OT.

GOLF

La Salle sophomore Michael Johnson (Hatboro-Horsham) and his father, Jim, carded a 2-over-par 70 to win the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s Father & Son (Middle) at Bala Golf Club this summer. Michael, the 2010 Patterson Cup runner-up, is coming off a rookie campaign that saw him earn Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors on four occasions. He led the Explorers in scoring average.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

Ashley and Aubrey Bossert (Wissahickon) were two of 98 Bloomsburg University student-athletes named 2010-11 PSAC Scholar Athletes.  To be recognized, a student-athlete must produce a minimum 3.25 GPA during the school year. Across the entire PSAC, there were a total of 2,038 scholar-athletes out of 6,338 total student-athletes.

MEN’S SOCCER

James Annobil (Wissahickon) is part of the incoming recruiting class at Chestnut Hill College. Annobil was an all-league defender for Wissahickon as a senior and was listed as a 2011 ‘Player to Watch’ according to TopDrawerSoccer.com. Annobil is a member of FC Delco and previously played for the Queens Park Rangers Football Club in London, England.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

La Salle University junior Gabrielle Pakhtigian (North Penn) will utilize a redshirt season due to an ACL injury she sustained during the offseason. Pakhtigian was a member of the 2010 Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll (both fall and spring), and she was the only sophomore to be named to the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team. She notched 11 wins last season, tying her for the most by a goalie in a single season at La Salle. She also became the first Explorer ever to play more than 2,000 minutes in a single season. She finished the season with 104 saves, which led the A-10.

Senior Tara Murphy (Council Rock South) collected five saves in goal in Temple’s 1-0 win over Iona in its season opener on Saturday.

MEN’S SWIMMING

WOMEN’S SWIMMING

Julia DeVincent (Upper Dublin), Kelly Duggan (Central Bucks West), Tori Hall (Council Rock North) and Kathryn Young (Pennsbury) were three of 98 Bloomsburg University student-athletes named a 2010-11 PSAC Scholar Athletes.  To be recognized, a student-athlete must produce a minimum 3.25 GPA during the school year. Across the entire PSAC, there were a total of 2,038 scholar-athletes out of 6,338 total student-athletes.

University of Maryland junior Megan Lafferty (Upper Dublin) was on the ACC Honor Roll for the 2010-11 academic year. To earn a spot on the honor roll, students must maintain a 3.0 GPA or better for the entire academic year. Lafferty also swam to two Olympic Trial cuts in the 50 free and 100 butterfly at Stanford this summer. Olympic Trials will be held in Omaha, Neb., in June/July of 2012.

MEN’S TENNIS

Lee Wexler (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was one of 98 Bloomsburg University student-athletes named a 2010-11 PSAC Scholar Athlete.  To be recognized, a student-athlete must produce a minimum 3.25 GPA during the school year. Across the entire PSAC, there were a total of 2,038 scholar-athletes out of 6,338 total student-athletes.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Chestnut Hill senior Sarah Doherty (William Tennent) was recognized as an Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete. In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a student-athlete must be a varsity letter winner with a GPA of at least 3.50 for the academic year and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.
