WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

West Chester junior cross country runner Kristina Koutsouros (Cheltenham) was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference women’s cross country athlete of the week. She also was named the female athlete of the week by West Chester University’s athletic department. Koutsouros turned in a career-best time of 21 minutes, 44.6 seconds and won the Lehigh Invitational the preceding Friday. Her time was better than 89 other runners in a field that contained three Division 1 schools. Koutsourous’ time was the fastest 6K that any WCU female runner has run the Lehigh course. It also marked the first time in her career that she eclipsed the 22-minute mark in a race that long.

FIELD HOCKEY

Junior Marlaine Schneider (Neshaminy) scored two goals and also had two assists in Rider University’s 7-1 win over Appalachian State last Sunday.

Sophomore Olivia Shoemaker (Souderton) scored a goal in La Salle’s 4-3 overtime loss to Lehigh University on Sunday. In Saturday’s 6-0 win over Siena, junior captain Becca Chylack (Souderton) scored a goal on a corner shot.

Brittany Varacallo (Central Bucks South) and teammate Sarah Lemieux combined for three saves in No. 8 IUP’s 4-3 win in overtime over Mercyhurst in the PSAC opener for both teams on Wednesday.

Caitlin Vasey (Central Bucks East) scored off the rebound of a penalty corner shot for her team’s only goal in Lebanon Valley’s 2-1 loss to Johns Hopkins on Tuesday. In Sunday’s home opener, Vasey contributed an assist in Lebanon Valley’s 4-1 loss to #13 Lynchburg.

Sophomore Maria Karidas (Council Rock South) contributed an assist in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 4-2 non-league loss to Alvernia on Saturday. On Tuesday, Karidas converted a penalty corner in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 3-0 non-league win over DeSales.

Goalkeeper Megan Goelz (Pennsbury) recorded 10 saves in Villanova’s 3-1 win over La Salle on Wednesday. The senior goalie recorded nine of those saves in the second half. On Sunday, freshman Maddy Harding (Central Bucks South) scored on a penalty corner in Villanova’s 6-3 loss to #3 Maryland. It was the first collegiate goal for Harding, who has started all five games for the Wildcats. Goelz recorded nine saves in a contest that saw the Wildcats battle the defending national champion Terrapins to a 2-2 halftime tie.

Senior Julie Rosenkaimer (North Penn) scored a goal in Kutztown’s 4-1 win over Slippery Rock on Friday.

FOOTBALL

Freshman Craig Needhammer (North Penn) had touchdown runs of 26 and 47 yards in Lycoming College’s 41-3 win over Westminster (Pa.) on Saturday in a PAC/MAC Challenge game.

Kevin Morton (Abington) threw for four touchdown passes, including a 55-yard pass in the first quarter and a 43-yarder that gave the Golden Bears the lead for good with 13:50 remaining in the third quarter of Kutztown’s 35-28 win over Mercyhurst in a battle of nationally-ranked squads. Morton has 10 touchdown passes on the season and extended his streak to 19 straight games with at least one TD pass. Jason Ulmer (Neshaminy) intercepted a pass in the end zone midway through the first quarter. Teammate Alex DiNolfi (Norristown) had an interception with 55.9 seconds remaining to ice the victory. Brett Moss (Bensalem) combined with teammate Richard White for a sack and was part of a defensive line that applied constant pressure on Mercyhurst quarterback Trevor Rearick.

Sophomore Derek Brown (Souderton) led East Stroudsburg defensively with 12 tackles, including eight solo stops, in the Warriors’ 28-13 loss to IUP on Saturday. Teammate Mike Bergey (Souderton) had four tackles and 2.5 TFL. He also combined with teammate Rudy Cerami for the game’s only sack.

Sophomore Mike Goode (Norristown) led Shippensburg’s defense with nine tackles and an interception in the Red Raiders 41-13 win over Gannon on Saturday. Goode had made tackles on the previous two pass plays before making the interception with Gannon nearing the end zone.

Brandon McManus (North Penn) kicked field goals of 23 and 27 yards in Temple’s 41-3 rout of Akron on Saturday. He also converted five-of-five extra point attempts.

MEN’S GOLF

Sophomore Mike Johnson (Hatboro-Horsham) shot a collegiate low round of 69 (-2) to lead the La Salle University golf team to its best team score in five year’s at this weekend’s Navy Fall Classic at the Naval Academy Golf Course. Johnson placed fifth, four shots off the lead, and the Explorers carded a second round score of 295 (+11) to finish ninth in the team scoring. Johnson’s score of 69 bests his 70 he shot in the second round of the Big 5 Invitational in October 2010. His 69 on Sunday was the second best score recorded on the day. His two round score was an even par 142. As a team, La Salle’s 295 was the best score since September 2006. One day earlier, Johnson shot a 73 in the first round to lead the way for the Explorers. As a team, the Explorers shot a 307 (+23) and were tied for ninth after 18 holes, nine shots out of the top five. Johnson shot a 33 on the front and followed with a 40 on the back and was tied for 17th, five shots behind the leaders.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

Millersville redshirt junior Jessica Jones (Council Rock North) was named to the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) 2011 Academic Honor Roll. The recipients, nominated by their faculty and staff, must have achieved at least a junior status to receive this award. Jones appeared in six games a season ago, scoring her first career goal against No. 9 Rollins. Jones, who majors in biology and athletic training, serves as an athletic trainer for fall sport teams at Millersville in the offseason.

MEN’S SOCCER

2010 First Team All-Patriot League midfielder Sean Peckham (Central Bucks East) made his season debut on Friday night and came through with the game-winning goal in the 88th minute to lead Lafayette to a 1-0 victory over visiting Mount St. Mary’s on day one of the Lafayette Soccer Puma Classic.

James Clark (William Tennent) stopped seven shots in goal in La Salle’s 3-1 loss to Iona on Friday.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Senior midfielder Devon Miniscalco (Council Rock South) scored a goal in East Stroudsburg’s 2-0 win over Alderson-Broaddus on Tuesday. The goal was the first of the season and 16th of her career for Miniscalco, who is one goal away from moving into ESU’s top 10.

Melissa Kornock (North Penn) scored in the 56th minute in IUP’s 1-1 tie with Shippensburg in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opener for both schools on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Samantha Wood (Central Bucks South) and teammate Shelbie Rackley combined for the shutout in goal in Shippensburg’s 2-0 win over Shepherd on Wednesday.

Redshirt junior goalkeeper Tara Murphy (Council Rock South) recorded six saves in Temple’s 3-0 loss to the University of New York on Friday.

Jen Hutchinson (Neshaminy) contributed an assist on her team’s only goal in No. 2 West Chester’s 1-0 win over Lock Haven on Wednesday.

Freshman Lauren Buchanan-Dwyer (Central Bucks South) scored a goal in East Stroudsburg’s 2-0 win over Clarion in its PSAC opener on Friday. Buchanan-Dwyer scored in the closing minutes of the first half to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

MEN’S TENNIS

Daniel Lee (Abington) earned a 6-2, 6-0 win at second singles in The College of New Jersey’s 9-1 win over Rider on Saturday.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Sophomore Abbie Keating (Neshaminy) contributed seven kills in Philadelphia Biblical Univeristy’s 3-1 win over Misericordia on Tuesday.

Freshman Devon Maugle (Plymouth Whitemarsh) contributed a team-high 11 kills in the University of Connecticut’s 3-0 win over New Hampshire at the Holly Young Invitational on Saturday evening. In UConn’s 3-0 loss to Indiana State earlier in the day, Maugle also had 11 kills. In Friday night’s 3-1 win over Fairfield, Maugle had seven kills.

Katherine Tohanczyn (North Penn) contributed eight assists in Chestnut Hill’s 3-1 loss to Georgian Court on Wednesday.
