MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Chestnut Hill junior Owen Ward (Harry S. Truman) placed 63rd with a time of 33:39.39 in the eight-kilometer race at Saturday’s Philadelphia Metro Meet at Belmont Plateau. Chestnut Hill finished 12th.
FIELD HOCKEY
Junior Taryn Gjurich (North Penn) traveled with her University of North Carolina teammates to Washington D.C. on Sept. 13 when the defending national champion Tar Heels were honored at the White House. Congratulatory words from President Barack Obama highlighted the reception on the South Lawn. The Tar Heels are off to a 9-0 start this season and are ranked No. 1 in the latest poll. Gjurich is a starting forward.
Sophomore Rebecca Chylack (Souderton) had an assist on the game-winning shot in LaSalle’s 1-0 win over St. Francis (PA) on Sunday.
Senior goalie Megan Purcell (Pennridge) had three saves in Widener’s 3-0 win over Muhlenberg on Sunday.
Freshman Lauren Purvis (Hatboro-Horsham) scored the game-winning goal in Penn State’s 1-0 win over Indiana on Friday night in the 2010 Big Ten opener. Purvis scored on the rebound of a shot on a penalty corner that was set up by the entry pass of Jessica Longstreth (Council Rock North). Penn State, ranked 14th, fell to Michigan 2-0 on Sunday and saw its record drop to 6-3.
Senior Katie O’Donnell (Wissahickon) scored a goal in Maryland’s 5-3 win over No. 8 Wake Forest on Saturday. The Terps (8-0) are ranked No. 2 in the latest Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll.
Julia Rush (Quakertown) converted a penalty stroke in Bloomsburg’s 3-1 loss to Shippensburg on Saturday. The loss was the first of the season for the Huskies (4-1). Shippensburg came into the game as the top-ranked team in Division II while the Huskies were ranked third.
Sophomore Kerry Senderling (North Penn) scored her first goal of the season in Shippensburg’s 4-0 win over Slippery Rock on Wednesday.
Coach Camrin Azzarano cited the defensive effort of Hope Donnelly (Abington) in Eastern University’s 2-0 win over Wilkes University on Saturday. It was the fifth shutout of the season for Eastern, and the win was the seventh consecutive for the Eagles, who improved to 8-1.
Sophomore goalie Jenna Phillips (Hatboro-Horsham) turned away five shots in Drexel’s 3-1 win over Temple on Wednesday. Teammate Megan Keller (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed an assist.
Sophomore goalie Ann Jefferis (Souderton) turned away seven shots in Richmond’s 3-2 loss to Davidson on Saturday.
FOOTBALL
Junior running back Kahlil Pittman (Abington) caught a team-high four passes for 24 yards and a touchdown in Ursinus College’s 24-7 win over Susquehanna on Saturday. Junior wideout Storm Miller (Central Bucks South) had three catches. Defensively, junior linebacker Greg Martell (Neshaminy) had a team-best eight tackles (seven solo).
Quarterback Kevin Morton (Abington) completed 17-of-22 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns in Kutztown’s 52-14 rout of Cheyney in its PSAC Eastern Division opener on Saturday. He also carried the ball eight times for 42 yards and a touchdown. Teammate Josh Mastromatto (Upper Dublin) rushed for 63 yards on 13 carries with one touchdown. Alex DiNolfi (Norristown) had five tackles and returned a fumble 48 yards for a TD as Kutztown upped its record 4-0 for the best start in school history.
D’Andre Webb (Harry S. Truman) ran for two touchdowns in West Chester’s 35-31 win over East Stroudsburg on Saturday. Jackson Fagan (Pennsbury) rushed for a team-high 94 yards on 12 carries. Redshirt senior Matt Freed (Souderton) led East Stroudssburg defensively with eight tackles.
MEN’S GOLF
Millersville sophomore Matt Dudas (North Penn) shot an 8-over-par following the first two rounds of the Atlantic Region Invitational but slipped into 42nd after a third round 82. The Marauders qualified for the NCAA regional, and while they finished seventh, they were just six shots out of fourth place.
MEN’S SOCCER
Sophomore Tom Natter (Abington) scored a goal with an assist from Fran Miller (Central Bucks East) in Bloomsburg’s 3-2 win over West Chester on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Alex Supplee (North Penn) sent a through ball that set up a goal in Shippensburg’s 5-0 win at Lock Haven on Sunday.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Freshman goalkeeper Samantha Wood (Central Bucks South) made her collegiate debut in Shippensburg’s 5-2 win at Seton Hall on Monday. Wood played all 90 minutes, picking up the win while making five saves.
Kelsey Stoka (Neshaminy) scored a pair of goals in Bloomsburg’s 2-0 upset of 4th ranked West Chester on Saturday afternoon.
MEN’S TENNIS
Bloomsburg University’s Lee Wexler (Plymouth Whitemarsh) earned a 6-0, 6-2 win over Evan Kratz from Wilkes University and a 6-1, 6-0 win over East Stroudsburg’s Will Norris but fell to Sam Wichlin of Mary Washington 0-6, 1-6 in the ‘A’ Singles competition at the Bloomsburg Invitational this weekend. Wexler and teammate Tyler Pultro (Central Bucks West) were 1-2 in ‘A’ Doubles competition.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Regina Doherty (William Tennent) was part of the third doubles team that earned an 8-0 win in Chestnut Hill’s 9-0 win over Post University on Friday. Doherty also earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at sixth singles.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
East Stroudsburg senior Alyson Stark (Council Rock South)was named the PSAC East Volleyball Athlete of the Week on Sept. 21. She averaged 3.3 kills, 1.8 digs and 0.6 blocks per set as ESU opened the week with a 3-0 win over Mercy College. In the win over Mercy, Stark had seven kills, four digs and two blocks. She turned in a pair of double-figure matches in kills in the crossover, with 14 kills, six digs, two blocks and a .220 hitting percentage in a four-set loss to defending regional champion California, and 15 kills, two digs and two blocks and a .294 hitting percentage in a three-set loss to Clarion. She also had eight kills and nine digs versus IUP and nine kills, seven digs and four blocks against Slippery Rock. On Friday, Stark contributed 14 kills, one ace and two blocks in ESUS’s 3-0 loss to Millersville. Millersville freshman Lauren Schmickle (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed an ace. Stark finished the weekend with 30 kills and had 10 kills in ESU’s 3-0 win over Philadelphia University earlier in the week.
Freshman right side hitter Brittany O'Hara (Pennridge) had six kills in Moravian College's match again Keystone College on Saturday. Moravian (9-4) won the match 3-0 (25-16, 25-9, 25-11).
