MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Penn State swept the top five spots at the annual Dolan Duals at Lock Haven University. Sophomore Nick Scarpello (Central Bucks West) finished fifth with a time of 18:08.72, improving significantly from last year by taking almost 30 seconds off his 2010 performance.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Bloomsburg’s Lauren Bond (North Penn) finished 29th with a time of 19:15 in Saturday’s Bison Opener at Bucknell University. Bloomsburg won the meet, which also included Bucknell, Susquehanna and Juniata. Teammate Matina Drew (Neshaminy) finished 34th with a time of 19:32 while freshman Sarah Renn (Quakertown) posted a time of 21:26.

Kutztown sophomore Carolyn Fergus (North Penn) finished in the top 50 at Friday’s Lehigh Valley Invitational, finishing with a time of 24:38.10.

Sophomore Laura Histand (Neshaminy) is coming off a strong freshman year and is projected to be a crucial scorer for this year’s Lock Haven squad. Histand was a member of the Haven’s PSAC and Atlantic Region teams.

Bloomsburg took six of the top 12 slots in the Marauder Alumni Open on Saturday, including Megan Moyer (Central Bucks South) with a time of 21:09 and Michelle Blum (Central Bucks East) with a time of 21:25.

Kristina Koutsouros (Cheltenham) was the individual champion and her West Chester squad placed fourth out of eight teams at Friday’s Lehigh Invitational in the school’s season opener. She crossed the finish line in 21 minutes, 44.6 seconds to pace the field made up mostly of Division I schools. She covered the 6K Goodman Campus course at Lehigh Valley faster than any other West Chester runner in school history while posting a time under 22 minutes.  

FIELD HOCKEY

Amanda Fleischut (Central Bucks West) scored the first of three Drexel goals in a three-goal spurt that broke a 1-1 tie and gave the 18th-ranked Dragons a lead they would not lose in a 5-3 win over Columbia on Friday. In last Friday’s season opener, Fleischut scored her first career hat trick to lead the Dragons to a 4-1 win over St. Joseph’s.

Sophomore Lauren Purvis (Hatboro-Horsham) scored a goal in 8th-ranked Penn State’s 3-0 upset victory over Virginia last Sunday.

Lindsay Staufenberg (Norristown) turned away 14 shots in Lock Haven’s 5-2 loss to No. 8 Penn State on Friday. Last Sunday, she had four saves in Lock Haven’s 2-1 win over Longwood, and in last Saturday’s season opener, Staufenberg was credited with seven saves in Lock Haven’s 4-3 loss to Radford.

Sophomore Maria Karidas (Council Rock South) scored a goal and also contributed an assist in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 3-1 win over Misericordia in the team’s season opener on Thursday. Teammates Erin Gorenflo (Plymouth Whitemarsh) and Casey Dellostretto (Upper Moreland) both contributed assists. On Saturday, Karidas contributed a goal in Gwynedd’s 5-2 loss to eighth-ranked TCNJ.

Sophomore Olivia Shoemaker (Souderton) scored a goal in La Salle’s 4-1 win over Georgetown last Wednesday in the Explorers’ season opener. Becca Chylack (Souderton) contributed an assist.

FOOTBALL

Shawn Leo (Souderton) set a school record by kicking four field goals in a game, including a 30-yarder in overtime of West Chester’s 35-32 OT loss to New Haven on Saturday. Several other SOL alums also are featured players on this year’s West Chester squad. Eric Hawthome (Council Rock North) is the leader of an offensive line that includes Chris Faix (Council Rock North). Senior co-captain Jackson Fagan (Pennsbury) will be featured in this year’s offense, and in Saturday’s loss, he rushed for 49 yards and one TD and also had seven catches for 79 yards. Senior cornerback Matt Colyar (Pennridge) will lead the secondary.

Brandon McManus (North Penn) was a perfect seven-for-seven in extra points in Temple’s 42-7 win over Villanova on Thursday in the third Mayor’s Cup at Lincoln Financial Field in front of a crowd of 32,638. He also punted twice for an average of 55.5 yards. Redshirt freshman Anthony Robey (Norristown) stripped a Villanova ball carrier at the Temple 40, a fumble that was recovered by teammate Tahir Whitehead.

Junior quarterback Kevin Morton (Abington) threw a career-high six touchdown passes for Kutztown in its 56-30 season-opening victory over Saint Anselm College in a non-conference game on Saturday. In extending his consecutive game streak to 18 with at least one touchdown pass, Morton threw for 313 yards on 21-of-38 passing. Junior Josh Mastromatto (Upper Dublin) rushed for 120 yards on 11 carries and returned four kickoffs for 126 yards. Rob Kee (Central Bucks South), Aaron McGlynn (Souderton) and John Zavorski (Neshaminy) were part of an offensive line that did not allow a sack in the game and made holes for an offense that averaged 8.2 yards a carry on the ground. The Bears ran for 261 yards in the second half alone. Defensively, Alex DiNolfi (Norristown) contributed an interception, and Brett Moss (Bensalem) had a quarterback sack. Kutztown is ranked 19th in the American Football Coaches’ Association top 25 poll released on Monday.

Sophomore Colin Masterson (Neshaminy) contributed a 33-yard interception return in Widener’s 44-6 route of Moravian in the Pride’s season opener on Saturday.

MEN’S SOCCER

Junior Drew Hilinski (Pennridge) buried a free kick in the 27th minute of Widener’s 5-0 win over Immaculata on Sunday at the Garnet Alumni Classic in Swarthmore.

Jeff Pio (William Tennent) scored in the 43rd minute of La Salle’s game against Bucknell on Sunday. Bucknell went on to win 2-1 in overtime. Jim Clark (William Tennent), who got the start in place of an injured John McCarthy, made 12 saves in the loss, including nine in the first half. In La Salle’s 2-0 loss to Penn on Friday, Pio recorded two shots while Clark recorded a save in goal after replacing McCarthy late in the contest.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Sophomore Jamie Vaniver (Council Rock South) contributed an assist in Bloomsburg’s 4-0 win over Davis and Elkins in the season opener for both teams on Thursday.

Sophomore Allie Riegel (Central Bucks West) is expected to be a major contributor for the Kutztown soccer team this season despite just returning to action after missing a week of training camp with an injury. Kutztown fell to Rollins College 3-0 on Monday.

Cara Deola (Council Rock South) scored a goal in No. 4 West Chester’s 4-0 win over Chestnut Hill in Thursday night’s season opener.

Junior back Ashley McKenna (Central Bucks South) contributed an assist in East Stroudsburg’s 4-3 overtime win over Georgian Court.

Redshirt junior goalkeeper Tara Murphy (Council Rock South) turned away four shots in Temple’s 2-1 overtime win over UMBC last Friday. Freshman Alyssa Kirk (Neshaminy) delivered a corner kick that set up the tying goal.

SWIMMING

Amanda Burke (William Tennent) and Zac Nees (North Penn) have qualified for the Olympic Trials to be held June 18-24, 2012. Burke won the one-meter springboard at the AT&T National Diving Championships, posting a score of 270.10. She finished sixth in the 3-meter with a score of 266.65 and was part of a 3-meter synchronized pair that finish second with a score of 266.64, qualifying in both 3-meter events for the Olympic trials. Nees finished seventh in the one-meter (349.70), finished 11th in the platform (308.90) and paired with Indiana University teammate Michael Dell’Orco III to finish fourth in the synchronized platform event (352.32), qualifying to compete at the Olympic Trials in platform and synchronized platform.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Gwynedd-Mercy sophomore Rachel Fein (Wissahickon) was selected to the CSAC Women’s Tennis Honor Roll after she compiled a 2-1 record at #1 singles and a perfect 3-0 mark in doubles. The sophomore swept both singles (6-1, 6-2) and doubles (8-3) over CSAC opponent Neumann. Fein then went 1-1 in singles in a tri-match against Moravian (L 8-3) and Misericorida (W 8-2) while going 2-0 in doubles play, picking up 8-2 wins against both opponents.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Liz DiValerio (Upper Merion) recorded seven kills and 11 digs in Kutztown University’s 3-1 win over C.W. Post on Saturday.

Freshman Devon Maugle (Plymouth Whitemarsh) led the University of Connecticut offense during the final match of the UConn Toyota Classic this weekend, delivering 12 kills in UConn’s 3-0 win over Binghamton. With the win, UConn claimed the title in the classic. In its first weekend of action a week earlier, UConn finished with a 1-2 record at the TCU Tournament in Fort Worth, Texas, defeating Grambling State and falling to Texas Tech and the host Horned Frogs. In UConn’s 3-0 loss to Texas Tech, Maugle had 13 kills on a .407 hitting percentage. In the Huskies’ loss to TCU, Maugle had a team-high 11 digs, and she delivered four kills and eight digs in UConn’s 3-0 win over Grambling.
