Central Bucks West dominated its home turf as the CB West girls’ collected four blue ribbon performances on the track and one in the field on a day that was far from perfect weather-wise. West was the very best of the female teams that competed in the Central Bucks Relays held on Saturday.
“We had an extremely good day on a pretty lousy weather day,” said Central Bucks West girls head coach Kiki Bell. “We expected to do well in some of the events, but we were also a little surprised in some of the others.”
CB West has an awesome foursome that outclassed the field in the 4 x 400 (3:57.36); the 4 x 200 (1:46.07); and the sprint medley (4:13.93). That talented quartet consisted of seniors Alex Gervais and Sherry Ben-Joseph, sophomore Lizanne Furst, and freshman Jamila Branch.
“Alex is one of the best team players we have. If we need her to high jump, long jump, or run hurdles, she will do it for the team,” said Bell. “And Alex is one of the most consistent runners that we have on the team. She is really coming into her own.
“Lizanne runs lead off for us, and she has improves every time she gets on the track,” added Bell. “And Jamila has been a great surpise. As a freshman, she has been thrown into a real pressure situation. And she has handled the pressure extremely well.”
The ‘fearsome foursome’ set both a meet record and stadium record with their wonderful performance in the 4 x 400. CB West bested the record held by West Catholic in 2002.
The biggest ‘surprise’ for CBW came in the Distance Medley Relay. West stopped the stop watches @ 12:52.94.
Junior Abby Waight ran the 1200 meter leg; freshman Jade Heaven took the baton and ran the 400 meter leg; junior Bryn Erin Kerr ran the 800 meter leg; and freshman Meghan Iatrola anchored the relay with the mile run.
Although not performing at its best on Saturday, the CBW 4 x 100 relay team of Furst, Branch, Heather Zezzo, and Jessican Chukwuma will be heard from in later meets.
The West javelin tandem of senior Jen Comfort and Cait Mautz also earned the top spot in the meet. The pair combined for a winning effort of 214 feet – 11 inches.
“We are getting into the championship weeks with the Penn Relays, the league meet, the district meet, and states,” said Bell. “This is the reward for all the hard work – to get a chance to compete with the very best.”

Norristown made its first ever visit to Abington to take part in the Jack Armstrong Invitational.
“It was a great experience for the kids – a very well run meet,” said Norristown head coach Miles Burrell. “The weather cooperated, and that always is a big part of how well teams are going to run.”
The very best of the Eagle runners this season will be the 4 x 100 relay. The team is comprised of senior Ciara Heath, along with sophomores Alexis Bell, Zanya Milligan, and Rowanna Watson.
“We felt really good about that team last year at districts, but we dropped the baton and didn’t qualify for states,” said Burrell. “They have been working very well together this season, and we expect huge things from them this season.
“They have the experience to know what it takes to move on,” added Burrell. “They run with confidence. Right now, they have the best time in the state.”
The Norristown foursome has a state best clocking of 48.45 this season.
On the boys’ side, Burrell has confidence in the development of senior Terrance Edwards. Edwards has thrown the shot put for a state best toss of 56 feet, 3 inches.
“Terrance isn’t as big as most of the shot putters he competes against,” said Burrell of the 5-foot, 11-inch Edwards. “He has to compensate with technique and quickness.
“He has made tremendous improvement during the four years he has been in the program,” added Burrell. “He is a spinner – and that sometimes takes away from his consistency. But he is without question my best shot and discus thrower.”
