2012 SOL Boys/Girls Soccer Preview (Second Round)

Check out the preview capsules for all of the SOL soccer teams in action in Thursday’s second round of the District One AAA Tournament.

Upper Moreland saw its season end in the quarterfinal round of District One AA play on Wednesday when the Golden Bears fell to Lower Moreland 3-2. The Lions struck first five minutes into the game, but senior midfielder Nate Roberts answered with a goal for Upper Moreland. The Lions responded with a goal to go into halftime on top 2-1. The Lions upped that lead to 3-1 before Dale Murphy scored a late goal for the 3-2 final. The Golden Bears closed out their season with an 8-10-1 mark.

BOYS

#9 WISSAHICKON at #8 CENTRAL BUCKS EAST

Wissahickon

  • 15-1-2 overall, 12-0-2 SOL
  • American Conference Champions
  • Last five games have been shutouts

Round One Summary: Pat Magdalinksi (Shane Fallen assist) scored the only goal in #9 Wissahickon’s victory over #24 Springfield (Delco) in the opening round of the postseason. The Trojans netted their only goal 30 minutes into the game.

Central Bucks East

  • 13-3-2 overall, 10-3-1 SOL
  • Second place Continental Conference
  • Beat #19 Abington (1-0) and American Conference Champs #9 Wissahickon (2-1)
  • 8-0-2 in the last 9 games

Players to watch: Ben Marks (Sr., Forward), Ryan Gleason (Jr., Midfield), Ryan Vare (Jr., Defense), Mark Philipson (Sr., Defense), Ian McArdle (Sr., Defense), Jacob Nesteruk (Sr., Goalie)

Round One Summary: The Patriots shut out #25 Avon Grove 3-0 in the first round. Ben Marks scored a pair and Evan Vare added a goal in the victory.

#13 SOUDERTON at #4 CONESTOGA

Souderton

  • 14-4-1 overall, 9-4-1 SOL
  • Fourth place Continental Conference
  • Nine shutouts in the regular season

Round One Summary: The #13 Indians maintained their composure for 93 minutes to top #20 Radnor 2-1 in overtime. Although the Raiders scored first, Wilson Gonzalez tied it for Big Red and sent the game into overtime. Standout Ryan Molyneaux scored the game-winner in overtime.

Conestoga

  • 15-3 overall, 9-2 league
  • Central League Champions
  • Lost to #2 Great Valley on 9/1 (1-0)
  • Nine game winning streak to end their regular season
  • Only allowed seven goals in eighteen games
  • Bye in first round

#15 PENNSBURY at #2 GREAT VALLEY

Pennsbury

  • 12-5 overall, 10-4 SOL
  • Third place National Conference
  • Won five in a row to end regular season

Round One Summary: The #15 Falcons battled past #18 Upper Darby for a 2-1 win in round one, rallying from an early 1-0 deficit. Sam Uprichard scored the equalizer in regulation, and Alex Tennant scored the game-winner 10 minutes into overtime.

Great Valley

  • 16-1 overall, 13-1 Ches-Mont League
  • Started the season with a 1-0 upset of the defending state champion, Conestoga
  • Lost to #1 WC Rustin 1-0 on 9/27, dropping them to second place in the American Division
  • Philadelphia Inquirer’s third-ranked team
  • Bye in first round

#10 LOWER MERION at #7 NORTH PENN

Lower Merion

  • Second place Central League
  • On a seven game winning streak
  • Beat #14 Harriton 1-0 in the regular season

Round One Summary: The 10th-seeded Aces rallied past #23 Central Bucks West 2-1, avenging a regular season loss to the Bucks. The Bucks scored first, but their lead was short-lived as Eli Cohen and Trevor Yu both scored goals to put the Aces on top.

North Penn

  • 14-4-1 overall, 10-3-1 SOL
  • Third place Continental Conference
  • Boast a seven-game winning streak
  • Beat Holy Ghost Prep (2-1) to close out regular season

Round One Summary: The Knights defeated #26 Strath Haven in a tightly contested battle that was decided in overtime. Matt Robinson scored both goals for #7 North Penn.

#19 ABINGTON at #3 CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH

Abington

  • 11-7-1 overall, 8-5-1 SOL
  • Fourth place National Conference

Players to Watch:  Chris Tracey (Sr., Defense), Danny Sheppard (Sr., Forward), Kyle Rocks (Sr., Forward), Billy Natter (Sr. Midfield)

Round One Summary: The 19th-seeded Ghosts upset #14 Harriton 2-1 in the opening round, recovering from an early 1-0 deficit. Chris Tracey buried the tying goal while Kyle Rocks sealed the victory with a goal in the 58th minute.

Central Bucks South

  • 14-2-1 overall, 11-2-1 SOL
  • Continental Conference Champions
  • Beat National Conference Champions #6 Neshaminy
  • Allowed only eight goals in 17 games
  • 10 shutouts
  • Had a first round bye

Players to watch: Matt Weigner (Jr., goalie), Pat Berneski (Jr., Defense), Andrew Denno (Jr., Defense), Danny DeVuono (Sr., Defense), Adam Remick (Sr. Co-Captain, Defense), Matt Gilbert (Sr., Co-Captain, midfield), Connor Stackhouse (Sr., Co-Captain, midfield)

Coach Don Brady says: “CB South is hoping to use the playoff experience from the past two seasons combining with a first round bye and home field advantage to capitalize on a District One run to advance to states.”

#11 COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH at #6 NESHAMINY

Council Rock South

  • 13-4-1 overall, 10-3-1 SOL
  • Second place National Conference
  • Did not lose at home this season
  • CR South defeated Neshaminy 2-0 in their first league matchup and tied them in their second

Round One Summary: The #11 Golden Hawks silenced #22 W.C. Henderson on Tuesday, shutting them out 5-0 and staying perfect on their home field. Julian Antal led the Hawks with three goals while Dan Kockett and Robert Zimmerman each added a single goal.

Neshaminy

  • 13-3-2 overall, 11-1-2 SOL
  • National Conference Champions
  • Beat Central League Champions Radnor 2-1 in their final game of the season
  • Nine shutouts

Players to watch: Austin Transue (Sr., Forward), Chris Waston (Jr., Goalie), Jamen Rowan (Soph., Sweeper), Nick Tucci (Jr., Midfield/ Forward), Devlin Mettee (Soph., Defense)

Round One Summary: The sixth-seeded Redskins are set to face league rival Council Rock South after battling their way to a 1-0 victory over #27 Unionville in the first round. The contest was scoreless for 73 minutes until Nick Tucci finally cranked in the game-winner. 

GIRLS

#9 WC RUSTIN at #8 CENTRAL BUCKS EAST

West Chester Rustin

  • 13-4-1 overall, 9-3-1 Ches-Mont League
  • First place Ches-Mont American Division
  • Late season 3-0 win over #12 W.C. Henderson
  • Won six of last eight games in regular season

Round One Summary: WC Rustin scored all of its goals in the second half to defeat #24 William Tennent on Tuesday. Abbey Kramer, Andre Gunderson and Caitlin Oswald each scored in the 3-1 win over the Panthers, who had the lead in the first half. Mary Toner and Maddie Moran registered the assists while Alexa Bushey was a midfield standout for the Golden Knights.

Central Bucks East

  • 13-4-1 overall, 10-3-1 SOL
  • Second place Continental Conference
  • Closed out season with 5-0 win over Upper Dublin
  • Beat #9 West Chester Rustin (2-0) as well as Archbishop Wood (2-0) in regular season

Players to watch: Nicole Pannella (Jr., Midfield), Shaun Kane  (Jr., Forward), Jess Haug (Sr., Back), Taylor Myzsa (Sr., Back), Abby Emmert (Jr., Forward), Aimee Chimera (Sr., Midfield)

Round One Summary: Mount St. Joseph, the tournament’s 25th seed, didn’t have a chance against the Continental Conference powerhouse and eighth-seeded Patriots, who blanked them 5-0 in round one of districts. Mariah Lichter netted three goals, Danielle DeMichael contributed a pair and Abby Emmert scored a single goal in the blowout victory.

#20 COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH at #4 PENNRIDGE

Council Rock South

  • 10-7-1 overall, 9-4-1 SOL
  • Third place National Conference
  • Defeated Council Rock North in last league game to clinch 3rd place
  • Closed out season with 2-1 loss to #21 Central Bucks West

Round One Summary: #20 Council Rock South upset 13th-seeded Hatboro Horsham 2-1 in a hard-fought contest between two evenly match teams. Nicole Caffey scored the first and last goal of the match while her defense prevented the Hatters from creating any scoring opportunities late in the second half.

Pennridge

  • 13-2-2 overall, 10-2-2 SOL
  • Continental Conference Champions
  • Reached state title game last year
  • Won seven in a row in the regular season
  • Defeated Council Rock South (3-1) on Oct. 1
  • Rams had a first round bye

Players to watch: Marissa Sheva (Soph., Midfield), Natalia Pinkney (Sr., Forward), Megan Shenk (Sr., Forward), Carly Henry, (Sr., Defense)

Coach Audrey Anderson says: The girls are excited for the post season, they know the sense of urgency needed to win in the post season and still have a lot of fight left in them.

#21 CENTRAL BUCKS WEST at #5 CONESTOGA

Central Bucks West

  • 9-6-2 overall, 7-6-1 SOL
  • Fifth place Continental Conference

Round One Summary: The #21 Bucks jumped out to an early lead in their upset of #12 W.C. Henderson 4-1 in the opening round. Shae McCarty was deadly for the Warriors, scoring a true hat trick, while Erin McQuate closed out the scoring.

Conestoga

  • 16-2-1 overall, 10-2 league
  • Second place Central League
  • Beat # Council Rock North 2-0 at their Homecoming game
  • Lost to # Strath Haven on 10/23/12
  • 12 shutouts
  • Bye in first round of Districts

#15 GARNET VALLEY at #2 NESHAMINY

Garnet Valley

  • 11-7 overall, 8-3 Central League
  • Third place
  • Ranked #2 in Daily Times Super Seven
  • Lost a late season game against Central League foe #5 Conestoga 2-1
  • Boasted seven consecutive shutouts during a midseason run.

Round One Summary: The 15th-seeded Jaguars dominated #18 WC East despite playing without their starting keeper, who suffered a season-ending concussion a few weeks ago. Taylor Buckley has taken on the role of keeper for the Jags, and she was phenomenal in their district opener, helping her team shut out the Vikings 2-0. Jackie Glanfield and Christin Esposito scored for Garnet Valley in the victory.

Neshaminy

  • 17-1 overall, 14-0 SOL
  • Undefeated National League Champions
  • Only loss is to #6 Downingtown West
  • Eleven shutouts in the regular season
  • Scored five or more goals in nine games
  • Had a bye in the first round

Players to watch: McKenna Mullin (Jr., Goalie), Megan Schafer (Soph., Forward), Katie Suchodolski (Fr., Forward), Jess Kelly (Jr. Midfield), Fran Donato (Soph., Midfield)

#10 PENNSBURY at #7 BOYERTOWN

Pennsbury

  • 13-4-2 overall, 10-3-1 SOL
  • Second place National Conference
  • Seven shutouts
  • Tied Villa Joseph Marie (#1 seed in AA District Playoffs) in regular season

Players to watch: Lexi Brown (Sr., Captain, Forward), Bridget Congdon (Sr., Captain, Defense), Cassandra Burger (Jr., Defense), Courtney Bennett (Jr., Defense), Sarah McDonald (Jr., Goalie), Uche Onuoha (Soph, Forward)

Round One Summary: The Falcons upped their shutout total to seven after beating #23 Downingtown East on Tuesday in the first round. Pennsbury scored both of its goals in the first half when Courtney Bennett and Uche Onuoha found the net. Lexi Brown was credited with controlling play for the Falcons.

Boyertown

  • 16-1-2 overall, 11-1-1 PAC-10
  • Defeated OJR in PAC-10 championship game on 10/18
  • Win over #6 Downingtown West in regular reason
  • Posted 16 shutouts this season

Round One Summary: The Bears increased their shutout streak to a whopping 16 after Robyn Piveateau scored both goals in a 2-0 victory over #26 Quakertown in the district opener. Megan Diehl and Marie Valenti each added an assist.

#19 CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH at #3 OWEN J ROBERTS

Central Bucks South

  • 9-5-3 overall, 7-4-3- SOL
  • Fourth place Continental Conference
  • 8-2-1 in last 10 games, including a 2-1 over #24 William Tennent in the regular season

Round One Summary: The 19th-seeded Titans upset the 14th-seeded Eagles of Bishop Shanahan on Tuesday. Nikki Weiss scored the only goal for South, knotting the score 1-1 and sending the teams into overtime. Two sessions of OT expire without a goal, setting the stage for penalty kicks, which the Titans won 4-3 to clinch the victory and advance to round two.

Owen J Roberts

  • 16-3-1 overall, 11-1-1 PAC-10
  • lost to #7 Boyertown in the PAC-10 championship game 10/18
  • Same record as #7 Boyertown in the regular season, but they beat them head-to-head and claimed the higher seed
  • Claimed program’s 300th win in their last league game
  • Had a bye in round one
