The PIAA District One Track championships were held last weekend at the magnificent Coatesville High School facility, and the Suburban One League matched that wonderful facility with some terrific performances on both the individual and team levels.

Congratulations to Cheltenham (60.5) for capturing the women’s title with Pennridge (48) and Central Bucks South (43) rounding out the top three SOL teams.

Congratulations to Bensalem (59) for capturing the men’s championship with Pennsbury (51) and North Penn (37.5) rounding out the top three SOL teams.

Jody-Ann Evans of Quakertown had District One gold medals draped around her neck for her superlative performances in both the 100 and 200 meters with season best times of 11.75 in the 100 and 24.28 in the 200.  Both times are the best times recorded in the state of Pennsylvania this 2013 outdoor season.

Conference titles are nice – district championships are even better – but Evans desperately wants to take the gold at states this weekend at Shippensburg University.

“I am going into states very confident, but with the understanding that anything can happen,” said Evans who has not-so-fond memories of her trip to SHIP U last year.  “This year I am going to do everything right – not like last year.”

Last year Evans lost a bout with the oppressive heat at states – even passed out at one point – and failed to achieve the performances she wanted.  Evans took 5th in the 100 meters and 7th in the 200 meters – far below her lofty expectations.

“The dorms there were extremely hot, and I wasn’t hydrated enough,” said Evans.  “There was no air conditioning, and I couldn’t get comfortable.  I can’t let that happen again this year.

“I guess you could say that I am more confident in the 100 than the 200,” added Evans.  “But I have worked extremely hard in the 200, and I was thrilled with the time I ran at districts in the 200.”

Evans will take her enormous talents to SHIP U again this year - possibly to the University of Pittsburgh next year – and hopes she isn’t quite as hot this year.  Except when it comes to the results and a trip to the medal stand.

Jeffrey Wiseman of Council Rock South had a District One gold medal draped around his neck for his superlative performance in the 800 meters with a winning time of 1:52.95.  Wiseman has a season best time of 1:52.07 – second in the state to Alex Kuntzweiler from District 3 who ran a 1:52.06.

Conference titles are nice – district championships are even better – but Wiseman desperately wants to take the gold medal in the state of Pennsylvania this 2013 outdoor season.

“Winning a district title was a goal – but winning states is the ultimate goal,” said Wiseman – a junior who is considering Ivy League schools along with Georgetown to continue his running career.  “I feel that I am much more confident this year and I know that I am a lot stronger.  I like to challenge myself to get better.”

Wiseman finished fifth in the District One championships last year – and finished seventh in states.  His eye is on the prize this year.

“Jeffrey has a legitimate shot at winning it all,” said CR South head coach Len Spearing.  “He belongs with the elite runners in the state, and he is running this year with a great deal of confidence.  Jeffrey could be called a once in a lifetime athlete – great talent and great attitude.”
