Neshaminy had the most impressive resume of the Suburban One League teams this 2013 football season as the Skins won the PIAA Quad-A District One championship.  The Neshaminy season ended with a 37-21 loss in the Eastern Regional finals to St. Joe Prep 37-21.

The playoff run included district one victories over Unionville (41-7), Spring-Ford (56-27), Abington (35-14), and North Penn (42-7).

North Penn had advanced to the District One finals with playoff wins over Coatesville (31-0), Pennsbury (31-21), and Perkiomen Valley (40-19).

Abington had advanced to the District One semifinals with playoff wins over Upper Dublin (55-25) and Garnet Valley (26-21).

Pennsbury had advanced to the District One quarterfinals with a playoff win over Upper Darby (55-20), while Central Bucks West had also advanced to the District One quarterfinals with a playoff win over Plymouth Whitemarsh (50-26).

Council Rock North, Plymouth Whitemarsh, and Upper Dublin all made the 16-team District One Quad=A playoffs but lost first round games.

Springfield made the PIAA District One Class AA field and lost in the first round.

The Suburban One League football teams will be realigned next season.  The SOL – for football only – will be placed in conferences according to male high school enrollment.  And although the final numbers are not officially in, there are many who project the following conference members.

Suburban One National Conference – (current members) Pennsbury, Neshaminy, Abington, and Bensalem (new members) North Penn, Pennridge, Souderton, and Central Bucks South.

Suburban One Continental Conference – (current members) Central Bucks East, Central Bucks West, and Quakertown (new members) Council Rock North, Council Rock South, Truman, William Tennent, and Norristown.

Suburban One American Conference – (current members) Plymouth Whitemarsh, Upper Dublin, Wissahickon, Cheltenham, Upper Moreland, Upper Merion, and Springfield (new member) Hatboro-Horsham.

This was The Year that Was in the Suburban One League in 2013…

National Conference Highlights

Game of the Year – Neshaminy at Pennsbury
The last week of the regular SOL-N season featured unbeaten conference opponents Neshaminy (6-0) and Pennsbury (6-0) at Falcon Field with the conference title on the line.  Pennsbury – the defending conference champion – stunned not only the conference, but also the district and state world as well with a 31-3 rout of the Redskins.  Running backs Charles Snorweah and Ronquay Smith each scored on 17-yard runs to showcase a 300-yard total offense.  The swarming Falcon defense held the Skins to less than 200 yards total offense (194) and a 22-yard field goal by Dylan McDonald.
Pennsbury (7-0):  The Falcons were considered to be a team that was a year away starting 14 underclassmen.  However, Pennsbury proved that the future is now in a powerful conference that sent four teams to the District One 16-team field.  The famed ‘Ground & Pound’ offense continued to dominate opponents as Charles Snoweah, Ronquay Smith, Raheem Thompson, and Breon Clark were the featured backs.  Conference wins over Neshaminy (31-3), Abington (37-0), and Council Rock North (42-8) allowed the Falcons to soar to the top of the standings.
SuburbanOneSports.com Offensive Player of the Year – Charles Snorweah

Neshaminy (6-1):  The Redskins were very impressive early in the season with a 3-0 preseason – all shutouts.  Neshaminy was impressive in the middle of the season as the Skins continued to pile up wins – including wins over District One conference playoff teams Abington (31-14) and Council Rock North (42-20).  The only blemish on the Neshaminy conference season was its disappointing 31-3 loss to Pennsbury in the season finale.
SuburbanOneSports.com Offensive Player of the Year – D’Andre Pollard

Abington (5-2):  The Ghosts matched Neshaminy with a terrific preseason going 3-0 and outscoring opponents 115-41.  Abington collected wins over everyone in the conference – with the exception of both conference powers Pennsbury (37-0) and Neshaminy (31-14).  The Ghosts earned a # 8 seed in the 16-field District One playoffs.  Abington senior Craig Reynolds is perhaps the elite back in a conference features superior running backs.  Reynolds set a single season rushing record for the Ghosts besting the 1983 mark set by John Stone.
SuburbanOneSports.com Offensive Player of the Year – Craig Reynolds

Council Rock North (4-3):  The Indians did not fare well against the Big 3 in the conference with losses to Pennsbury (42-8), Abington (41-6), and Neshaminy (42-20).  However, Rock North was perfect against both the rest of the conference and the entire preseason schedule to earn a 16-seed in the District One playoffs.  The CR North season ended with a 35-21 loss in that game to # 1 seed Garnet Valley.  Sophomore quarterback Brandon McIlwain has continued to showcase his tremendous talent and should be a force next season as the Indians shift to the SOL Continental Conference next season.
SuburbanOneSports.com Offensive Player of the year – Brandon McIlwain

Harry S Truman (2-7):  The Tigers won their first conference game since October 16, 2010 when HST bested William Tennent 29-0.  A second win would come two weeks later when the Tigers captured a 20-13 win over Bensalem.  Senior quarterback Jake Zolna was both an offensive plus and a valued team leader this season.  Truman will also shift to the SOL Continental Conference next season.
SuburbanOneSports.com Offensive Player of the Year – Jake Zolna

Council Rock South (1-8):  The Golden Hawks were anything but golden this season as Rock South suffered through a season with injuries.  The lone conference win for the Hawks was a 34-21 win over William Tennent.  The season was the final one for senior center Eric Gallo who will take his talents to Virginia Tech next year.  Council Rock South will also shift to the SOL Continental Conference next season.
SuburbanOneSports.com Offensive Player of the Year – Greg Paprocki

William Tennent (1-8):  The Panthers looked to be improved on the field, but William Tennent was able to won just a single conference game this season.  The lone SOL-N victory came in a 22-21 victory over Bensalem.  The program looks to be on the upswing under the leadership of first year head coach Bob Rosenberger.  The Panthers should be more competitive in the SOL Continental Conference next season.
SuburbanOneSports.com Offensive Player of the Year – Alex Parks

Bensalem (1-8):  The Owls had a very rough season with only a single win this year.  Bensalem defeated Council Rock South 42-35 in conference play.  The bad news for the Owls is that they will again have to compete with the ‘big boys’ in the SOL National Conference again next year.

Continental Conference Highlights

Game of the Year – North Penn at Central Bucks West
Both the Knights and Bucks were unbeaten in conference play as the two eventual district one playoff teams collided on the second last week of the conference season.  The collision was a huge one for West as the host Bucks were bulldozed by North Penn by a 50-14 score.  The Knights – who led 43-14 at halftime and invoked the mercy rule in the second half – was led by sophomore running back Nyfease West who scored 3 touchdowns.  West was led by senior Marvin Todd with 120 yards and 2 touchdowns.

North Penn (7-0):  The Knights were torched in the preseason with losses to La Salle (34-7), Archbishop Wood (49-3), and St. Joe Prep (35-6) – but North Penn rebounded with a seven game win streak in the conference to claim the title.  Included in that championship run were impressive wins over CB West (50-14) and Pennridge (31-20).  Sophomore running back Nyfease West became a force during the conference season and joined seniors Luke Berry and quarterback Austin Shearer in the explosive Knight backfield.  North Penn – who will shift to the SOL National Conference next season – earned a # 11 seed in the PIAA Quad-A District One playoffs.
SuburbanOneSports.com Offensive Player of the Year – Nyfease West

Central Bucks West (6-1):  The Bucks were somewhat of a surprise team in the conference with a second place finish losing only to North Penn.  CB West became a playoff team with a thrilling 21-20 win over Pennridge and fashioned a seven game win streak along the way.  Senior Marvin Todd – a transfer from Truman – became a rushing and touchdown machine for the Bucks all season.  CB West – which will remain in the SOL Continental Conference next season – earned a # 7 seed in the PIAA Quad-A District One playoffs.
SuburbanOneSports.com Offensive Player of the Year – Marvin Todd

Pennridge (4-3):  The Rams would have to be considered one of the disappointments this season as the Green & White failed to get a district playoff invitation.  Pennridge lost to North Penn (31-20) and CB West (21-20), but the game that proved to be the most costly was a 32-29 loss to Souderton.  Senior Michael Class continued to improve his resume as one of the finest backs in the area.  The Rams – who will shift to the SOL National Conference next season – took sole possession of third place in the conference when the PHS defeated Quakertown 27-7 on Thanksgiving morning.
SuburbanOneSports.com Offensive Player of the Year – Michael Class

Quakertown (3-4):  The Panthers rode a roller coaster conference season that saw them lose the first three conference games, but rebound to win the next three with victories over Souderton (24-21), Central Bucks South (24-7), and Central Bucks East (34-28).  Matt Stoneback has been the cornerstone of a Panther team that ended the season with a winning record overall record of 7-5 after a 1-10 season last year.  Quakertown – who will most likely remain in the SOL Continental Conference again next season.
SuburbanOneSports.com Offensive Player of the Year – Matt Stoneback

Central Bucks East (3-4):  The Patriots were hit hard by the injury-bug early in the season, but recovered to win a trio of conference games.  CB East claimed wins over Hatboro-Horsham (37-19), Souderton (28-16), and Central Bucks South (28-21).  The Patriots featured one of the most explosive sophomore running backs in the area in Alex Gibson.  Central Bucks East will once again compete in the SOL Continental Conference next season.
SuburbanOneSports.com Offensive Player of the Year – Alex Gibson

Central Bucks South (2-5):  The Titans season went ‘south’ when junior running back Josh Adams was lost for the season with a leg injury.  With Adams, the Titans were 4-1 and looked like both a conference contender and a district playoff team.  Without Adams, the Titans spiraled to season ending five straight losses.  Central Bucks South will be the lone Central Bucks team to shift to the higher enrollment SOL National Conference next season.
SuburbanOneSports.com Offensive Player of the Year – Matt Radwanski

Souderton (2-5):  The Indians suffered through one of its most frustrating seasons under head coach Ed Gallagher.  Souderton managed just a pair of conference wins over Hatboro-Horsham (21-6) and Pennridge (32-29).  The victory over the archrival Rams, however, was critical in that the loss knocked Pennridge out of both conference and district consideration.  Manny Nieves proved to be one of the game breaking wide receivers in the area.  Souderton will also shift to the SOL National Conference next season.
SuburbanOneSports.com Offensive Player of the Year – Manny Nieves

Hatboro-Horsham (1-6):  The Hatters were both ‘new and improved’ under first year head coach Michael Kapusta.  Hatboro-Horsham collected a single conference win when the Hatters topped Quakertown 26-19.  Rumor has it that the Hatters will move to the Suburban One League American Conference next season.

American Conference Highlights

Game of the Year:  Upper Dublin at Plymouth Whitemarsh
Both the Flying Cardinals and the host Colonials were unbeaten as the two eventual district playoff teams collided in the second to last week of the conference season.  Plymouth Whitemarsh was able to hang on for a 28-23 victory over the Cardinals and record its third straight conference championship.  Senior quarterback Connor Hanlon rushed for 3 touchdowns for PW, while senior quarterback John Derr passed for 190 yards and scored a rushing touchdown for Upper Dublin.

Plymouth Whitemarsh (7-0):  The Colonials opened the season with a pair of losses to Perkiomen Valley and Abington – and closed the season with a loss to Central Bucks West in the first round of the PIAA Quad-A District One playoffs.  But in between Plymouth Whitemarsh had a glorious season with eight straight wins that included a sweep of the seven game SOL American Conference schedule.  Senior quarterback Connor Hanlon engineered a potent Colonial offense that showcased running backs Brian Afflick and Jose Mora-Vega.
SuburbanOneSports.com Offensive Player of the Year – Connor Hanlon

Upper Dublin (6-1):  The Flying Cardinals were indeed air borne at the outset of the season winning eight straight games before its first loss of the season in Week 9 against Plymouth Whitemarsh.  Upper Dublin lost two weeks later in the first round of the PIAA Quad-A District One playoffs to Abington to close the curtain on its successful season.  Senior quarterback John Derr led a team that featured a number of underclass starters.  The future of the Cardinal program is bright with the return of many starters next season.
SuburbanOneSports.com Offensive Player of the Year – John Derr

Wissahickon (5-2):  The Trojans finished the season with a winning record, however Wissahickon was not able to repeat as a district playoff team this season.  The Blue & Gold finished the conference season with four straight wins that included victories over Cheltenham (41-33), Upper Merion (36-20), Norristown (30-14), and Upper Moreland (27-20).  Wide receiver Jared Reed was one of the top pass catchers in the area.
SuburbanOneSports.com Offensive Player of the Year – Dave Stellato

Cheltenham (4-3):  The Panthers won their last 3 consecutive conference games to capture a winning conference record.  CHS defeated Upper Moreland (42-28), Upper Merion (42-26), and Norristown (35-14) in the stretch run.  Quarterback Marcus Heimann was a touchdown maker in the final weeks of the season both running the football and passing.
SuburbanOneSports.com Offensive Player of the Year – Marcus Heimann

Springfield (3-4):  The Spartans – a Class AA school - collected 3 conference wins over Upper Merion (33-31), Upper Moreland (18-16), and Norristown (35-14).  Springfield was a # 4 seed in the PIAA District Playoffs and played powerful # 1 seed Imhotep Charter in the first round of the playoffs.  The season came to a crushing end with a 53-7 loss to the Panthers.  Quarterback Brandan Doyle had an excellent season for the Spartans.
SuburbanOneSports.com Offensive Player of the Year – Brendan Doyle

Upper Moreland (2-5):  The Golden Bears – a Class AAA school – collected a pair of conference wins over both Upper Merion (55-34) and Norristown (21-20). It was a rare non-appearance season in the Class AAA playoffs for UMHS. Upper Moreland had some offensive firepower provided by running back Tyler Whitmore and quarterback Charlie Hooker.

Upper Merion (1-6):  The Viking season has a promising start by winning three of the first four games of the season.  However, the season did not end well for Upper Merion as the Vikings lost their last six games of the season.  The lone conference win of the season came when Upper Merion captured a 31-27 victory over rival Norristown.  Running back JeQuan Mitchell was one of the best backs in the conference this season.
SuburbanOneSports.com Offensive Player of the Year – JeQuan Mitchell

Norristown (0-7):  The Eagle season started badly and finished badly as Norristown failed to win in its 11 games this season.  The closest the Eagles came to a win was a 21-20 loss to Upper Moreland.  Norristown will attempt to end its 18-game losing streak next season – but the Eagles will have to accomplish that feat in the SOL Continental Conference.
SuburbanOneSports.com Offensive Player of the Year – Kip Patten
