The outcome of the Suburban One League Conference championships is coming into sharp focus – and 4-0 is the place to be at the midpoint of the conference season.  The SOL National Conference, the SOL Continental Conference, and the SOL American Conference all have a pair of unbeaten conference teams.

In the SOL Continental Conference, both North Penn (4-3, 4-0) and Central Bucks West (6-1, 4-0)have yet to taste defeat in conference and will have a possible showdown championship contest on October 25at Central Bucks West.  Prior to that date, North Penn will host Pennridge (5-2, 1-2), while Central Bucks West will travel to Hatboro-Horsham (3-4, 1-3).

And the beat goes on …

Pennridge Rams

Pennridge won its biggest game of the year when the Rams rallied from a first quarter deficit to defeat Central Bucks South 24-13.  It was the biggest game of the year – until this week when the Green & White travel to Towamencin to meet first place North Penn.

“Back when I used to play it was all about either Quakertown or Souderton,” said Pennridge head coach Jeff Hollenbach – a 1970 Pennridge alum and former Ram quarterback.  “But now it is all about North Penn for these kids – and for good reason.

“As soon as the game was over, all the kids wanted to talk about was playing North Penn next week,” added Hollenbach.  “We beat them last year, and that is the program that provides the best competition year in and year out.”

“North Penn is the beast,” said Pennridge senior Michael Class.  “Right now, they are the best team in our league.  And we want to go out and prove that we can be the best team in the league.”

Both North Penn and Pennridge have gone through some adversity this year – the Knights (4-3, 4-0) lost three straight non-conference games to PCL powers La Salle, Archbishop Wood, and St. Joe Prep to begin the season.  The Rams – after a 4-0 non-conference start – lost back-to-back SOL Conference games to CB West and Souderton.

“We look forward to meeting that challenge,” said Hollenbach.  “It should be another great high school football game.”

Council Rock North Indians

Council Rock North (5-2, 2-2) might not be a conference championbut the Indians are still very much in the conversation for a PIAA Quad-A District One playoff spot.

“Any time you can get to the seventh week of the season and still be involved in the playoffs, you can’t shy away from it,” said Council Rock North head coach Adam Collachi.  “A goal of ours from the very beginning of the season is to have ourselves thought of as a Neshaminy, Pennsbury, or an Abington – a district playoff team.

“We want to continue winning football games, playing well, and improving each week,” added Collachi.  “And we are going to have a huge test this week when we play Pennsbury.  They are extremely tough.”

The contest against the first place Falcons (5-1, 4-0) will be played Saturday night at 7 pm as part of Pennsbury’s Homecoming celebration.

“If we were able to knock them off, it would be a huge momentum builder for the rest of the season,” said Collachi.  “But it is going to be extremely difficult.  Pennsbury has an excellent football team.”

Plymouth Whitemarsh Colonials

Plymouth Whitemarsh head coach Dan Chang remembers his high school playing days at North Penn – and playing in the rain and mud.  And Chang got to coach his first place Colonials in the wet and muck last Friday as PW sloshed to a 32-23 victory over host Upper Merion.

“I always had a great time playing in the rain and mud,” said Chang.  “But coaching the game becomes somewhat of a challenge.  It changes what you can do on offense, and sometimes it is a great equalizer between the two teams.

“We lost two fumbles, and the elements might have had something to do with the turnovers,” added Chang.  “Upper Merion did a great job against us.  We have made such great improvement since the first week of the year, and we have to continue to improve.”

Plymouth Whitemarsh (5-2, 4-0) is unbeaten in conference play but must face rival Norristown (0-7, 0-4) before its showdown contest with Upper Dublin (7-0, 4-0) in two weeks.

“We need to make sure we take care of business against Norristown,” said Chang.  “Norristown has great athletes, and they can be very dangerous.”
