That Was The Week That Was in the Suburban One League.

The Continental Conferencehad a huge upset last week as Central Bucks West (4-1, 2-0) scored in the final moments to defeat host Pennridge (4-1, 0-1) - 21-20 - to  knock the Rams from the unbeaten ranks.

The surprising Bucks – who host rival CB East (2-3, 1-1) this week – join North Penn (2-3, 2-0) and Central Bucks South (4-1, 2-0) as the unbeaten conference teams.  North Penn will go on the road to meet CB South on Friday in a pivotal conference game.

The National Conferencehad no surprises last week in that the Big Three – Neshaminy (5-0, 2-0), Pennsbury (4-1, 2-0) and Abington (5-0, 2-0) all remained unbeaten in conference play.

The game of the week in the National Conference will be the Pennsbury at Abington game on Friday.  The Ghosts, though, will play without two of their biggest offensive weapons due to injury (see below).

The American Conferenceagain featured huge wins by its two elite teams – Upper Dublin (5-0, 2-0) and Plymouth Whitemarsh (3-2, 2-0).

The Cardinals’ margin of victory was 24 points over winless Norristown (0-5, 0-2), while the Colonials’ margin of victory was 28 points over Cheltenham (2-3, 1-1).

And the beat goes on …

North Penn Knights

North Penn is in total control of its own destiny as the Knights prepare for a huge game this week when they travel to Warminster to face Central Bucks South.

“A couple of 2-0 teams in the league, and the winner will have things in their own control in terms of winning a championship,” said North Penn head coach Dick Beck.  “With Pennridge losing (to CB West 21-20), the winner of this game could set the tone for the rest of the league.”

The Knights have collected conference wins against CB East and Quakertown, but North Penn will have a step up in competition this week against the host Titans.

“Josh Adams is ‘the man’,” said Beck in reference to the talented junior running back from South.  “South can score points, and we sure don’t want to get into any shootout with them.

“We have been improving the last two weeks, but we still aren’t where we want to be,” added Beck.  “We get Chris Akin back this week, and for the first time this year we should have 100 percent of our weapons.”

Akin will join sophomore running back Nyfease West in the backfield.  West has been the featured back the last two weeks for the Knights.

“Nyfease has been a little bit of a surprise,” said Beck.  “We want to continue to find ways in get him more involved in our offense.”

Abington Ghosts

Abington had hoped to be going into this Friday’s game with rival Pennsbury unbeaten – and the Ghosts have done just that winning their first five games.

Abington also hoped that it would be going into the Pennsbury game with the talents of senior running back Craig Reynolds and junior quarterback Anthony Lee playing at a high level.

Neither will play in the game as Reynolds injured a knee in the Bensalem game last week and is week-to-week, while Lee was lost for the season with a broken ankle in the Council Rock North game.

“Sure we would like to play Pennsbury with our guns loaded, but it isn’t going to happen,” said Abington head coach Tim Sorber.  “Our defense is going to have to realize that our two big guns are out, and we have to have a mindset that we can win the game defensively.  We are going to have to create some points from the defensive side of the ball

“Losing Craig is tough not only as an offensive weapon, but as a punt returner and as an outstanding defensive back,” added Sorber.  “We are going to need three players to replace what he does for us.”

Abington quarterback Brett Guagliona was effective in the 19-13 win over Bensalem, and Sorber hopes that the junior will continue to improve.

“We might have to do some things differently,” said Sorber.  “But Brett was thrown into a tough situation, and has accepted the challenge.”

Upper Moreland Golden Bears

Upper Moreland captured a huge victory last week when the Golden Bears outgunned Upper Merion 55-34 in a shootout.

Both Upper Moreland and Upper Merion are Class AAA teams – the only two in the conference – and the winner gets an inside track for the Class AAA playoffs at the end of the season.

“It is actually easier for us to get into the playoffs than it is for us to win a championship,” said Upper Moreland head coach Adam Beach.  “When we play a team like Upper Merion that is of equal size to us, we get a great measuring stick for how good a team we are.”

Another measuring stick might be sophomore Tyler Whitmore who has established himself as one of the elite runners in the conference.

“Teams know who good he is, and teams key on him the entire game,” said Beach.  “We have to work off of that – include other players in our offense – but still try to create open space for him.”
