2013 SOL Football Notebook (Week Three)

Scott Huff highlights Cheltenham, Central Bucks East and Pennsbury and highlights the top performances in each conference.

By Scott Huff

The second week of the Suburban One League non-league games saw no less than eight SOL teams remain unbeaten.  That list includes Upper Dublin and Springfield from the SOL American Conference; Neshaminy, Abington, and Council Rock North from the SOL National Conference; and Pennridge, Hatboro-Horsham, and Quakertown from the SOL Continental Conference.

There were five teams that bounced back from losing efforts in Week One to record important wins in Week Two.  That list included Upper Merion and Cheltenham from the SOL American Conference; Pennsbury from the National Conference; and Central Bucks West and Central Buck East from the Continental Conference.

Three of those teams – Cheltenham, Pennsbury, and Central Bucks East – will be featured in the snapshots below.

Take Note:  the Suburban One League schedule features games on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday this week.

And the beat goes on…

The Suburban One League American Conference ‘Snapshot’
Cheltenham Panthers

Cheltenham was taken to the woodshed in Week One and given a 42-point spanking by Downingtown West in a 56-14 loss.  In Week Two, it was the Panthers who took their opponent to that same woodshed as Cheltenham administered a 42-0 beating to Bishop McDevitt.  That, my friends, is an 84-point turnaround.
“Needless to say, the teams we played the last two weeks were on the opposite end of the spectrum,” said veteran Cheltenham head coach Joe Gro.  “Downingtown West will prove to be one of the better teams in the area, and Bishop McDevitt is an extremely young team that is going to go through some growing pains.”

Cheltenham will not be making any trip to the woodshed this week as the Panthers will face an upstart Quakertown team that has won its first two games.  Q-town opened the season with a 26-7 win over Upper Perkiomen and followed with a 31-14 win over Upper Moreland.

“Quakertown is back to playing old school football,” said Gro, who has coached against that breed of Panther for decades.  “Quakertown always has tough kids and plays a very physical football game.  This game isn’t going to be like the first two – it should be very competitive.”

SOL American Conference ‘Honor Roll’ Performances
Jequan Mitchell and Carmen Fortino of Upper Merion sparked the Vikings (1-1) in their first win of the season over Octorara – 34-14.  Mitchell rushed for 195 yards and a couple of touchdowns, while Fortino was 11-of-15 for 130 yards and a pair of scores.
John Derr of Upper Dublin scored on a 46-yard touchdown run and completed nine passes for 110 yards as the Flying Cardinals (2-0) soared to a 21-7 win over Harry S Truman.
Jhaloni Johnson and Martin Morgan of Springfield were outstanding as the Spartans (2-0) marched to a 29-6 win over Neumann-Goretti.  Johnson returned an interception 99-yards for a score and also rushed for a touchdown, while Morgan rushed for a game-high 133 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns.
Greg Morris and Mark Heimann of Cheltenham had terrific games as the Panthers (1-1) raced by Bishop McDevitt 42-0.  Morris scored a pair of touchdowns for the winners, while Heimann did Morris one better with three scores.
Tyler Whitmore of Upper Moreland showcased big play explosions in defeat as the Golden Bears (1-1) lost to Quakertown 31-14.  The junior speedster scored on runs of 68 and 61 yards.
Dave Stellato of Wissahickon was the lone highlight film maker for the Trojans (1-1) in their 42-7 loss to Archbishop Ryan.  Stellato – who rushed for a team-high 122 yards – scored on a spectacular 80-yard touchdown burst.
Connor Hanlon of Plymouth Whitemarsh got the Colonials (0-2) on the scoreboard for the first time this season with a pair of touchdown plays.  Hanlon threw a 33-yard TD pass and scored on a five-yard run as PW lost to Abington 34-12.
Sonny Brewer of Norristown completed nine passes for 115 yards and a touchdown and led the Eagles (0-2) in rushing last week.  Norristown scored first but lost to CB East 27-7.

Pennsbury Falcons

Pennsbury opened its season with a 38-28 loss to highly regarded Easton in Week One, but the Falcons soared to a 43-12 victory over Frankford in Week Two.

“We open with an excellent team like Easton because we want to be able to prepare ourselves for the tough games that are going to follow,” said Pennsbury head coach Galen Snyder.  “We want to challenge ourselves, and playing quality teams is the best way to challenge yourself.”

Pennsbury junior running back Charles Snorweah accepted that challenge against Frankford with a stunning performance.  Snorweah rushed for 198 yards and scored three touchdowns to fuel the high powered Falcon rushing attack.

“That is without doubt the best game that Charles has played in his three years playing here,” said Snyder.  “We asked him to do a lot of blocking the last couple of years, and he made the most of his opportunity to run the football.

“We played a lot better against Frankford, and we are going to have to continue to get better this week,” added Snyder as the Falcons meet Ches-Mont power Downingtown East.  “East has a great program, and those are the types of team we want to continue playing in the non-league games.”

SOL National Conference ‘Honor Roll’ Performances
D’Andre Pollard of Neshaminy rushed for a game-high 139 yards and 3 touchdowns as the Skins (2-0) routed Downingtown West 39-0.
Craig Reynolds and Tyler Schreiner of Abington each scored a pair of touchdowns to lead the Ghosts (2-0) to a 34-12 win over Plymouth Whitemarsh.  Schreiner scored on an 84-yard run, while Reynolds added a 61-yard touchdown jaunt.
Charles Snorweah of Pennsbury had a spectacular outing as the Falcons (1-1) soared to a 43-12 victory over Frankford.  Snorweah jetted for 198 yards and scored three touchdowns to showcase the ‘Ground & Pound’ Pennsbury offense.
Brandon McIlwain of Council Rock North accounted for all of the scoring for the Indians (2-0) in their 15-13 victory over Northeast.  McIlwain scored a rushing touchdown, threw a touchdown pass, and accounted for the game-winning 2-point conversion.
Jake Zolna of Harry S Truman was the leading rusher for the Tigers (1-1) in a 21-7 loss to Upper Dublin. Zolna – the senior quarterback – also fired a TD pass for HST.
Macho Mendez of William Tennent scored on a 76-yard touchdown burst as the Panthers (0-2) were beaten by Central Bucks West 19-12.
George Pegram of Bensalem completed eight passes for 115 yards and threw a touchdown pass as the Owls (0-2) were defeated by Pennridge 37-6.

Central Bucks East Patriots

Central Bucks East jumped on the victory trampoline as the Patriots rebounded from its 46-39 loss in Week One to Boyertown to defeat Norristown 27-7 in Week Two.

“We were down 21 points to Boyertown to come back and make a game of it,” said Central Bucks East head coach John Donnelly.  “And then we were down 7-0 to Norristown, but we came back to win the game.  In the Boyertown game we missed out on opportunities to win the game, and in the second half of the Norristown game we made the most of those opportunities.”

Central Bucks East racked up 508 yards of total offense against Boyertown – and two individuals set school records in that loss to the Bears.  Quarterback Zach Nelsen passed for a school record 339 yards and fired four touchdown passes, while Brendon Ilkiw registered a school record 156 yards in receptions.

CB East will take its high-octane offense into battle this Thursday as the Patriots host Abington.  The equally high-octane Ghosts feature an offense that generated high scoring wins over both Fels (53-22) and Plymouth Whitemarsh (34-12).

“This game has a chance to be a real offensive slugfest,” said Donnelly.  “Craig Reynolds is one of the best backs in the area, and we have shown that we can have a real explosive offense.  It should be a great game to watch.”

SOL Continental Conference ‘Honor Roll’ Performances
Ameir Simmons of Pennridge helped out talented senior Michael Class as the Rams (2-0) rushed for 323 yards on a 37-6 victory over Bensalem.  Simmons rushed for 76 yards on just 4 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns for Pennridge.
Jeff Panara of Hatboro-Horsham rushed for a game-high 70 yards and scored 3 touchdowns as the Hatters (2-0) topped Pottstown 29-13.
Marvin Todd of Central Bucks West rushed for 210 yards on 25 carries and scored two touchdowns as the Bucks (1-1) captured a 19-12 victory over William Tennent.
Jake Warren of Central Bucks East rushed for a pair of touchdowns as the Patriots (1-1) rallied for a 27-7 victory over Norristown.
Matt Stoneback of Quakertown rushed for a couple of touchdowns as the Panthers (2-0) defeated Upper Moreland 31-14.

Matt Ammendola of North Penn booted a 35-yard field goal to account for all the points in the Knights (0-2) 49-3 loss to Archbishop Wood.
Manny Nieves of Souderton caught a 75-yard pass for a touchdown to account for all the points in the Indians (0-2) 28-7 loss to Unionville.
