  • SOL Continental:  Pennridge & Quakertown Win Share of Title

Quakertown’s wild ride back through the Continental Conference after losing to Pennridge early in the season has been a smooth one that parked them right up front with the Rams.  Both teams clinched their piece of the title with wins on Wednesday night.  Quakertown dismantled CB West 54-18 in a bout that was highlighted by Tyler Seislove’s victory over the Bucks Bryan Jastrebzski 2-0 at 138 lbs.  CBW was shorthanded, as they forfeited four times on the night, and despite wins from Riley Barth (145) and Jason Douple (152) in the middle, they could not overcome the 24 free points.

At CB South Wednesday night, it was the Rams from Pennridge who also climbed back to the top of the Continental, as they were victorious 37-26 over the Titans.  Led by Pennridge freshmen Kyle Gentile’s 14-3 major decision at 138 over Giuseppe Marreo, the Rams pushed their lead to 31-14.  Josh Stencler sealed the deal with a pin to close out the match at 170 pounds.

The shared title has become a common occurrence in the SOL for many sports.  It does not make sense to not have tie-breaking criteria to crown the champs.  In this situation, head-to-head results would have solved the problem.  And the next dilemma, the league tournaments that are fast approaching next Saturday, February 16th, 2013, will not produce team champion.  Although team score will be kept, there will be not awarding the team champion a team title, as the SOL Conference titles are decided by dual results.

For some, this is acceptable, as the league tournaments are individual qualifying tournaments for the District One Championships.  For others, not crowning a team champ is unfathomable.  Thus, the brass at the SOL will permit team scores to be kept, publically released, and shared with the fans at the tournaments.  Changes in crowning SOL champs will be consider by coaches and ADs after the postseason, but for now, everyone must accept the change, enjoy the league battles, and watch those individuals who rise to the top and peak on the Road to Hershey and at the PIAA State Championships.

In other action in the Continental, Hatboro-Horsham shocked CB East 42-35.  H-H Warrior senior Jason McLaughlin spoiled the Patriots Senior Night by pinning Dan Driver late in the match after trailing 12-3 at 145 pounds, the night’s final bout.  H-H posted six falls while winning eight of the 14 contested bouts.  Freshmen Nick Schuck (220) followed Insung Hwang’s quick pin at 195, with a pin of his own to put the Hatters ahead 27-6.  The Hatters trailed only one time all night after East’s Fransesco Fabozzi decked Matt Swiacki at 132 pounds making the score 33-35.

  • SOL National:  Pennsbury & CR South Co-Champs

Both the Falcons from Pennsbury and the Council Rock South Golden Hawks are champions of the SOL National Conference.  Despite Pennsbury’s 44-25 league win over Rock South, the Falcons will need to give South a piece of dual meet trophy.  Please see above for more on sharing SOL championships.

Only Council Rock North could stop the Falcons this season in league action – the Indians were victorious last week over the Falcons.  Neshaminy could have been the spoiler, but Pennsbury manned up with a convincing win, 43-27 over the Redskins Wednesday night.  Pennsbury’s 120 pounder Jason Bing joined the 100-win club.

I am sure that the team scoring in the league tourney will be closely watched here, as the team with the most points may lay claim to bragging rights for league supremacy.

  • SOL American:  Upper Dublin Caps Off Record Season With Win

In wrestling, it is often said “that second place is the first loser,” however, at Upper Dublin there was a lot of winning this season for the Flying Cardinals.  In fact, they won a total of 19 times, setting the all-time Upper Dublin single season dual meet win record.  They dominated Wissahickon Wednesday night to cap off a 19-4 2012-13 campaign.  UD’s Sam Jacobson was perfect on the season, going 29-0.  Congrats to Wissahickon 160 pounder Pat Fennel as he secured his 100th Career Win in just his junior year.

Norristown went undefeated in league action (6-0) and defended their league title once again with a 69-6 win over Upper Merion.
