2014 SOL Boys' BB Notebook (Vol. 7)

Cheltenham, CB South and Abington are highlighted in this week's notebook.

The Suburban One League Challenge on Saturday was an event that featured the Coaches vs. Cancer theme.

“There is no question that my players realize the magnitude of the game,” said Abington head coach Charles Grasty.  “I lost my Mom to breast cancer, and my players know that there are bigger things in life than high school basketball.”

“Our guys were very aware of the cause we were playing for,” said Cheltenham head coach John Timms.  “We wore the pink socks to show support.  I was very aware of the cause during my time as coach at Friend’s Central.  It is an important lesson for the players to learn.”

“The game is an important reminder for the players,” said Central Bucks South head coach Jason Campbell.  “And it was great this year that all 24 teams from the Suburban One participated in this significant event.”

Amen.

Central Bucks South Titans

Central Bucks South (6-2 conference) continued its journey to the top of the conference standings with a recent victory over Pennridge (5-2), and the Titans hope to secure their place in the standings with a tough road game against North Penn (5-3).

“We are in the same spot this week that Pennridge was in last week,” said Central Bucks South head coach Jason Campbell.  “We needed to beat them in order to have the same number of losses, and if North Penn can beat us they would have the same number of losses that we have.

“North Penn is a team with great experience and depth,” continued Campbell.  “They remind me of the team that we had last year – a team that could go deep off the bench and continue to play with great energy.

“It is going to be a challenge to go into their gym and get a win,” added Campbell.  “We have gone into some tough gyms this season, and we have played well.”

The last time that CB South faced North Penn was in the first half of the season and the Titans had to work overtime to come away with a 70-63 victory.  Guard Matt Scamuffo scored 25 points in that contest, including nine points in the overtime.

“Matt has been scoring a lot of points lately,” said Campbell of his senior guard who scored 34 points in the CB South win over Pennridge.  “But he not only scores points, but creates opportunities for the other players.

“Bryce Dobisch has been a great compliment to Matt,” added Campbell.  “We have been playing well lately, and those two have done a great job.”

Right now the Titans are in first place – and sometimes it is easier to get to first place than to stay there.

Stay tuned.

Abington Ghosts

Abington has been perfect in conference this season with an 8-0 mark, but head coach Charles Grasty knows that the other teams in the SOL-National are not going to hand the title over to the talented Ghosts.

“We are playing a Council Rock North team that only has three conference losses and is playing great basketball right now,” said Grasty.  “They have won five straight games, and it is not the same team that we played the first half of the season.”

Neither are the Ghosts who defeated Rock North by an odd 48-28 score in the first conference meeting.

“That game was played very early in the season, and I don’t think that either team really had an identity at that time,” said Grasty.  “There were a lot of players on both sides that didn’t have a whole lot of varsity experience, and it showed.  That won’t happen this time around.

“I don’t really have to get into how important this game is to our season,” added Grasty.  “All the kids go on the internet – look at Suburban One Sports – and know exactly what is at stake for that game.

“We have Anthony Lee back at about 90 per cent from his football injury, and Matt Penecale is getting healthy as well,” continued Grasty.  “We need to continue to play hard – play for each other – and good things will happen.”

Those things already have for Grasty and his Ghosts.

Cheltenham Panthers

Cheltenham will take its shot at first place in the conference standings when the Panthers go on the road to meet first place Plymouth Whitemarsh.

Cheltenham is 7-1 in the conference, while PW is a perfect 8-0.  The Colonials routed the Panthers 88-53 in the first meeting between the two conference contenders.

“We hope that PW has in its mind that it was a 35-point game,” said Cheltenham head coach John Timms.  “The game was a lot closer than the final score (PW outscored the Panthers 25-8 in the fourth quarter), but we still weren’t playing our best basketball.

“We have a chance to beat them this time, but we are going to have to take care of the basketball,” added Timms.  “If we don’t – we’re going to be in a lot of trouble.  If we do – it could be a great game.”

Cheltenham is a pristine 7-1 in the conference but a less than impressive 7-9 overall.  The Black Cats has played some wonderful non-conference teams.

“I didn’t get the job until the end of October, really didn’t meet the players until November 18th, and only had eight practices before our first game,” said Timms.  “It was a little overwhelming at the beginning of the season, but we have begun to make the transition to the style of play I want us to play, and we are playing with more confidence.

“To be 7-1 in the league gives us a chance – I keep reminding the players that this is ‘our’ league,” added Timms.  “This league is a league of guards, and in Aaron Burton, Jeremiah Coleman, and Justin Sutton we have quality guards.  The guard play will decide who wins the games among the best teams in the league.”

And right now, you can count the Panthers among those teams.
