WARRINGTON – It was a typical night on the gridiron for Josh Adams, but despite a stellar effort from the junior standout, Central Bucks South found itself in a battle to hold off a gutsy Council Rock South down the stretch.

While Adams gained 225 yards and scored four touchdowns, the Titans, who led 17-0 at halftime, tightened their defense when it mattered most and earned a 31-21 win.

All told, Adams carried the ball 23 times and also caught three passes for 29 yards. The only points that Adams didn't score for CB South came from the kickers on four extra points and one field goal. It’s the kind of performance that is all but expected from the star running back after his outstanding sophomore season.

“They're going to put it on my back,” Adams said. “It's my second year, so I really have to step up.”

And, for the most part, when Adams was going strong last year, the Titans were also rolling along.

The Golden Hawks came up with a defensive stand on the Titans’ opening possession, but on their second possession of the night, the Titans got on the scoreboard when Adams went 55 yards around left end, sprinting past several Golden Hawk defenders to reach paydirt.

He added a second score in the second quarter. With the ball on the CB South 20, Adams again raced around left end and bolted to the end zone.

Jon Williams took care of the rest of the points in the first half for the Titans. He kicked both extra points and added a 21-yard field goal, which gave South a 17-0 halftime lead.

Then things got a bit sticky. Council Rock South dominated the ball in the third quarter, running off 19 plays to only eight for the Titans,

The Hawks also put their first points on the scoreboard when quarterback Greg Paprocki bulled into the end zone from five yards out and Dylan Moyer booted the conversion to cut CB South's lead to 17-7.

In the fourth period, the Hawks trimmed the Titans' lead even more. They scored with only eight seconds elapsed in the quarter when Vince Alimenti picked off a Matt Radwanski pass in the flat and went 46 yards into the end zone untouched, making the score 17-14.

However, in the fourth quarter, every time CR South scored, CB South came back and scored also. Adams ran in from 11 and 44 yards to offset a TD pass by Paprocki.

CB South head coach Dave Rackovan knew his team had some problems against Council Rock South. But he was pleased that the Titans were able to overcome them.

“I thought we had some growing pains tonight,” Rackovan said. “We didn't execute as well as I thought we should have.

“We have two starters on offense and two starters on defense back. I'm proud of those kids. They hung in there. They played the game well.”

Rackovan also knew what he had in Adams. Even though Adams had a hard time getting started.

“Josh was struggling a little bit tonight,” he said. “He got hit in the chest early.

“And his endurance wasn't real good. He had to take a play off here and there. He wasn't the typical Josh that we've had. But when he was good, he was real good. He's just at a different level than everybody else.”

Adams has stepped up his game for his junior season. If possible, he is getting better.

For one thing, he has added some weight, going from 185 last season to 205 this year.

“I had to put on some weight from last year,” Adams said. “They called me 'Twig' last year. He (Rackovan) told me that I better not lose any speed, though.”

And Adams seems to be better at waiting for his blocking to set up.

“Last year, I really didn't stay patient enough to wait for a block,” he said. “That's something I really worked on.”

Rackovan acknowledged the play of the Hawks' Eric Gallo, who has moved to center on offense while staying at defensive tackle. Gallo has committed verbally to play next season at Virginia Tech

“Gallo just dominated the defensive line of scrimmage,” Rackovan said. “A lot of the time we couldn't block him.

“We tried to but he dominated. It was a great game with a great defensive lineman (Gallo) and a great running back (Adams).”
