All-Star Baseball Academy Player of the Week: Brendan Campbell

All-Star Baseball Academy
SOL Player of the Week
for week ending April 26, 2014
(Players are selected by nomination of coaches as well as
SuburbanOneSports.com’s baseball writers based on their
performance the preceding week with the final selection
made by SuburbanOneSports.com’s baseball writers.)

Brendan Campbell, Senior, Pennsbury High School
The two-year captain was 2-for-3 with a double, home run, three RBIs, three runs scored and a stolen base in Pennsbury’s 5-2 win over Neshaminy. For the week, he was 6-for-12 (.500) with a double, home run, six runs scored and four RBIs with an on-base plus slugging percentage of 1.433. Campbell, who has signed to play collegiate baseball at Carson-Newman, leads the Falcons in plate appearances (51), at-bats (44), hits (20), runs (14), stolen bases (7), batting average (455) and on-base percentage (.529).

Note from the coach:
“He’s a kid who works at his craft,” coach Joe Pesci said. “Coaches always say the guys who take the extra BP and the extra cuts are usually the ones that don’t need it. He’s the type of guy who’s always working. He’s made huge strides. He had a great year last year, and he was first team all-league, but his batting average right now is about .150 points higher than it was last year. He had a huge two-RBI single that helped us beat Council Rock North earlier this year, and he was 2-for-3 with a home run in our win against Neshaminy. As the leadoff guy, he always comes up in big situations, and he delivers.
“We actually started him out in the four spot at the beginning of the year, and he came to us and said, ‘I feel comfortable at the leadoff, and I’ll do whatever you need me to do.’ When we made that change, he really started to catch on fire. He’s been consistent, and he battles. He might go down 0-2, but he’ll battle, battle, battle and come away with a hit. It’s a testament to his work ethic and his leadership qualities – not only the way he plays, but he tries to motivate. He’s an extension of the coaching staff.”
