All-Star Baseball Academy Player of the Week: Max Perilstein

All-Star Baseball Academy
SOL Player of the Week
for week ending May 17, 2014
(Players are selected by nomination of coaches as well as
SuburbanOneSports.com’s baseball writers based on their
performance the preceding week with the final selection
made by SuburbanOneSports.com’s baseball writers.)

Max Perilstein, Senior, Cheltenham High School
The Panthers’ senior catcher was the batting leader in the American Conference, finishing the year with a .469 batting average (.571 OBP, .735 SLG, 1.306 OPS). He finished the year with 21 RBIs. He also led the Panthers behind the plate, calling the pitchers for every game in a season that saw Cheltenham capture the SOL American Conference crown.

Note from the coach:
“He’s been undoubtedly one of our leaders the last couple of years,” coach Frank Decembrino said. “Defensively, he’s like having another coach on the field. He’s been calling the game pretty much the whole season. He just has a knack for communicating with the pitchers as well. If they struggle or seem to lose it on the mound, he knows exactly when to call a timeout, go out and settle them down and get everybody back together. Those types of qualities have been huge. They don’t really show up in the scorebook or the scoreboard, but it’s huge for us. To have a kid like that who you can lean on and count on is immeasurable.
“He has been phenomenal. He’s going to be a bio major, and he chose Penn State even though he has opportunities for baseball at other schools. His performances over the past two seasons – he just gets better and better and better.”

About Max:
Best memory playing baseball:
This whole year. I was never a part of a walk-off win before, and this year I’ve been in several.
Part of the game I enjoy most:  Throwing people out and calling the game. I get offended when people steal on me – it’s not nice, and I love stopping them.
My role models are:  My parents, they are morally good people, and I aspire to be like that.
Music on iPod:  Rock, Alternative, Country
Favorite food:  Steak and Mashed Potatoes
Favorite class:  Spanish
Future plans:  I’m going to Penn State, hope to walk on to their team and then medical school.
Famous person I’d invite to a dinner party: Ken Griffey, Jr., Socrates, Charles Darwin, Johnny Carson (I’ve always heard how great he was).
