Taylour Alston – Indiana University of Pennsylvania (Basketball)
Major:  Chemistry
Final list of colleges: IUP, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT)
Reasons for choosing IUP: “On my official visit, after watching them practice, I saw how intense they were, and I liked their program. I fell in love with the campus, and I love their coach.  IUP’s record has been real good over the past three years, and they’ve won a (PSAC) championship.
“I was so stressed out all summer. I didn’t know where to go, I didn’t know what to pick, but now it feels great.”
When did the idea of playing collegiate basketball become a reality? “In 10th grade when I was in the newspaper, that was the first time I actually thought about it because when I first started playing basketball in seventh grade, it was horrible. It was so embarrassing.
“When I was a sophomore, I realized – maybe I am good at basketball. I decided this is what I wanted to do. I wanted to play, and I just went for it.”
Coach Maggie deMarteleire says: “Taylour has been just exceptional. She has improved immensely since her sophomore year. She hasn’t been playing basketball all that long – she started in seventh grade, and she has put in an awful lot of time to get to where she is right now.
“She was one of our leading rebounders and leading scorers, and I think IUP is a good fit for her. I know she’s very excited about it even though she doesn’t tell anybody about it. She’s very humble and modest, but now it’s out.
“She’s very, very aggressive. She’s very competitive. She’s just extremely talented, and really it’s from her own hard work.
“I’m very excited for this year. Taylour has been voted one of our captains by our team, and she definitely deserves it. Each year we have made strides, and I think this year will be the culmination of her hard work. I think it will show through our team’s success.”
