SOL SHSHL Player of the Week

This recognition is sponsored by Bergey’s Inc. Athletes are chosen based on nomination of coaches, and the recipient must be a positive presence on the ice and a credit to the game. Consideration also is given to the student-athlete’s standing in the school and community.

Jake Mueller – Freshman at Hatboro-Horsham High School
It might be rare for a coach to point to a freshman as the cornerstone of his program, but when Mueller chose to play for a Hatboro-Horsham team that did not field a team in the SHSHL last year because of declining numbers, others followed. He is third on the team with 14 goals to go along with six assists (20 points).

Note from the coach:
“This is his first year in our program,” coach Gus Salfiti said. “He’s a big kid for a ninth grader, and he’s very aggressive, very fast. He’s quiet, and he works really, really hard. He’s really an awesome future for us.
“He’s played travel hockey for a number of years, but what he does is he takes instructions really well. I ask him to do something and he does it. He’s speaking on the ice, he knows what to do, he pays attention to whatever the situation may be. Shorthanded, power play – he knows how many people are on the ice. He’s almost like a secondary coach, if you will, who understands what’s going on. He has a good hockey IQ. He’s a very hard worker, and what I like the most is he’s quiet about it. He’s the strong, silent type.
“When we were trying to build the program and get kids interested, it seemed he was the one we had to garner interest from, and other kids would join because he created the interest.”
