Bergey’s Inc. SOL SHSHL Player of the Week

This recognition is sponsored by Bergey’s Inc. Athletes are chosen based on nomination of coaches, and the recipient must be a positive presence on the ice and a credit to the game. Consideration also is given to the student-athlete’s standing in the school and community.

J.D. Killough – Senior at Souderton Area High School
A longtime member of the program, Killough is universally respected for being tough, hard working and always polite. A good student, he is involved in numerous activities and periodically hosts the school’s weekly television show. Although he was cut in ninth grade when the jayvee team folded, he remained loyal to the program and returned the following year. He is one of just four seniors on a very young team that includes 11 freshmen and sophomores. Killough has willingly played any position he may be needed, and he brings veteran leadership to the young and inexperienced squad.

Note from the coach:
“J.D. is just an all-around good kid, and on a hockey team full of young kids and inexperienced players, he is a very good balance on our squad,” coach Matt Montagna said. “You never have to question his effort, his attendance – all the stuff that goes along with hockey, you just don’t have to question, and it’s greatly appreciated.
“Back in eighth grade, he played jayvee, and he was a good player. My second year we decided not to field a jayvee team and went with a 17-18 man varsity roster. He was so little, and he just wasn’t ready for it. As soon as there was a team the following year, he was right back out there. He was always respectful. He knew it wasn’t personal. Last year, he played every varsity game for us, but he also was a swing player.
“He’s a blue-collar player, he’s a steadying influence, he’s a good player, and he’s well respected by his teammates. He plays defense, he plays wing, he plays center. He plays everything but goalie. He plays every position for me. I truly appreciate JD.”
