Bergey’s Buick GMC
SOL SHSHL Player of the Week

This recognition is sponsored by Bergey’s Buick GMC. Athletes are chosen based on nomination of coaches, and the recipient must be a positive presence on the ice and a credit to the game. Consideration also is given to the student-athlete’s standing in the school and community.

Tyler Gilbert had not seen playing time in goal for the varsity until this year. The senior goalie began the season playing for the junior varsity, but when coach Kenny Doak gave him the nod to go in net for his first varsity start, Gilbert delivered. He had a shutout through two periods in a win over CB East. He is 2-0 in his two starts, and in three games for the varsity, he faced over 100 shots. An excellent student, he has been accepted at Drexel University where he plans to major in architecture.

Note from the coach:
“We’re a powerhouse team – we have a lot of offense, and we’re scoring a ton of goals,” coach Kenny Doak said. “We knew we were going to be strong, but our goaltending was suspect. We didn’t know where we stood because we only had two goalies. I said, ‘You know what, we’re going to give Tyler a shot.’ He went in against East, and it was a shutout until the third period. In the first period, he had to stop a penalty shot against Bryan McIntosh, who’s one of the leading scorers in the league. Tyler stopped the penalty shot, and we started him the other night (against Council Rock North), and he pitched a shutout. He wants the net, and he’s doing well.
“Tyler is very quiet. He doesn’t say much. Before I gave him his first shot, he came into practice, and he practiced (ticked) off. He wanted the net, and he made some unbelievable saves in practice. I’ve been coaching over 20 years, and that’s the kind of guy I want. During one drill at practice, (Luke) Slater, who’s up there in scoring, went in on a breakaway, and Tyler saved it. It got my attention. I said, ‘You want the pipes? I’m going to give you a shot,’ and he did it. He came to practice with a chip on his shoulder, and he practiced ticked off. He wanted the net. He’s an awesome kid.”
