For the second time in as many years, the Central Bucks South girls’ lacrosse team volunteered their time at the Bucks County SPCA.
Lacrosse season is still several months down the road, but the Central Bucks South girls’ lacrosse team had the opportunity to do some bonding while also providing some much needed help at the Bucks County SPCA.
“I feel that it’s very important for high school teams to give back to the community and felt this would be a fun charity for the girls to help with,” coach Janique Craig said.
For the second time in as many years, the squad volunteered their time to help clean and decorate the Lahaska facility while also providing some quality playtime with the pets.
“It’s a big help to them, especially around the holidays,” senior Leslie Searles said. “We love it. It’s a great way for the team to bond.
“We don’t know some of the freshmen, but we pair off in groups and do different things. You get to meet new people and just have a lot of fun with everyone.”
“This also was the first time we got to see each other in a while,” senior Courtney Wasson added. “It’s cool to hang out with the girls because we’re all really close. To see the girls that are (underclassmen) that I don’t get to see during the school day - it was really fun just to get together and catch up and get ready for the season coming up.”
Thirty-five players gave up a Saturday to volunteer their time at the SPCA.
“We helped them get ready for their Christmas open house,” Wasson said. “They get a lot of donations of food and things like that, so they had us clean that and put it where it needed to be. There was a job for everyone.”
The opportunity to spend time with the animals was an added bonus.
“I have a dog, and I love my dog,” Searles said. “It was great to see all the dogs and know they were having someone who was coming to visit them who might want to take them home.
“I’m normally not a big cat person, but all the cats in there are so sweet, and it’s just really nice to get out and help the animals because they can’t help themselves.”
Wasson, the owner of two dogs, echoed a similar sentiment.
“I love animals,” she said. “It’s a fun way to get involved, and they really appreciate it, so it’s a fun thing to do.”
In addition, the lacrosse team donated items to the Bucks County Housing group and has donated time to NOVA (Network of Victim Assistance). For the past several years, they have participated in the Colby Umbrell Memorial 5K. Umbrell is a Central Bucks East athlete who lost his life in Iraq. The players also donate their time to DAA lacrosse in the spring, a program Craig started in 1998.
“We have a great turnout at these charity events,” Craig said. “It’s a fantastic way to give back to the community and for the girls to bond as a team.”
