WARWICK — For a pair of teams that had never met, it was contempt at first sight.

No flirting, no early dance of two clubs feeling each other out, no finesse.

Instead, it was trash talk, multiple penalties, and multiple injury stoppages.

CB South ended up hurt and limping, but ended up in the Flyers Cup Class AA final, thanks to its 6-2 win over previously unbeaten Parkland in the Flyers Cup Class AA semifinals.

“This was a physical game, both teams were going at each other,” CB South coach Tom Coyne said. “We knew it would be this way, and fast-paced. We’ve been preparing for this.”

Coyne has had his club travel to Connecticut to face some of the top teams in the States, and he has also made an effort to schedule top-notch private schools locally.

“We always like to face the best competition we can for the postseason, for matchups like this one,” he said. “We constantly challenge ourselves.”

Mike Pilla recorded a pair of goals — including the eventual game winner.

“I capitalized on a loose puck,” Pilla said of his go-head goal early in the third period, which put the Indians up 3-2. “I saw an opening and tried to get a shot off quick.”

Just 27 second later, teammate Alex Stoll followed up to make it 4-2, and there was no looking back.

“We took some penalties early on that really slowed us down, but we really wanted this win and we came out in the third and dominated,” Pilla said. “All four of our lines made it happen, and we just wore (Parkland) down.”

South’s Tom Liberta scored the game’s first goal and had an assist, Brenden Clements had a goal and an assist, and Leo Flick finished with three assists for the Titans (22-4-1).

CB South outshot Parkland 32-13.

“It was a grind early on, but we just kept at it,” Coyne said. “In the third period, we were off and running.”

Brett McHale and Connor Breinich scored for Parkland (22-2-1).
