Samantha Haering – Wingate University (Cross Country)

Major:  Biology with a minor in Exercise Science
Final list of colleges:  Wingate, Salisbury, Elon, Millersville
Reasons for choosing Wingate:  “When I went to visit, everyone was really nice. It’s a good size – it’s not huge. I’ll definitely be a person there, not a number. The coach is probably one of the nicest coaches I’ve talked to. He seemed really interested in me and in making me a better runner. A lot of his runners have really improved. I didn’t want to go D-1 because I want to focus on school, so it was my best option.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in cross country at the collegiate level?  “In ninth grade, as soon as I started running cross country, I knew I would want to continue on. It’s something that keeps me focused in school, and it’s good even for future employment because it shows you’re committed. I think it’s a good intro to college because you get to meet new people. It’s that one step that gets you in the right direction.”

Coach Ryan Walsh says:  “Sam ran four years of track and two years of cross country.  She experienced immediate success on the track but then had setbacks due to iron deficiencies. Once this deficiency was identified and treated, Sam immediately improved during her senior year to be a member of a state medalist 4x800 team. Sam showed leadership and acted always acted as a positive role model on the track, cross country course and in the classroom.  This work ethic will help Sam excel in college.”
