The second hole at Jericho National Golf Club has never been particularly kind to Matt Palmieri. As a matter of fact, the hole has been a bit of a problem.

“I play at Jericho often, and number two has always been one of my toughest holes to try and go for,” the Council Rock North junior said.

In Thursday’s match against Abington, all that changed when Palmieri buried his first hole in one on the par-three hole number two.

“I just can’t believe it,” he said. “I was just trying to make a committed swing with my six iron. When I saw the ball in the air and my teammates screamed, I knew it went in.”

Palmieri ended the day shooting a par 36 on the front nine, and his Rock North team defeated Abington 198-207.

Coach Richard White acknowledged that the second hole at Jericho can be tough.

“Hole number two has been a problem for Matthew since he’s been playing,” the Indians’ coach said. “It’s one of those holes that just grabs you and gets you, and this time the ball just happened to go into the hole.

“It was witnessed by the group ahead of him on the third tee. They looked back and saw it. It hit well short of the green and rolled up and rolled up and kept rolling and rolling and went into the hole.”

Beyond his big day on Thursday, Palmieri has developed into a key contributor for the Indians.

“Matthew is one of our most dedicated players,” White said. “He spends as much time on every phase of his game with Dom DiJulia’s help.

“Dom has been his champion for a couple of years now, and this golf professional has recognized what Matthew needed and has directed him and gotten him where he is today. It’s because of Dom that his interest is there, his abilities – whatever they may be – it all comes back to Dom DiJulia.”

The Indians are 6-0 on the season, and Palmieri has played a key role in that success.

“Matthew has been one of our more consistent players,” White said. “He has shown that under most circumstances he can keep it together and do what he has to do.”

Palmieri and teammate Logan Fuglestad shared match low honors on Thursday, but it was Palmieri’s 36 that included the golf memory of a lifetime.
