CR North's Meyer to Swim at SMU

Council Rock North senior Madison Meyer has accepted a scholarship to swim at Southern Methodist University.

Madison Meyer – Southern Methodist University (Swimming)

Major:  Business Communications and Marketing

Final list of colleges:  SMU, University of North Carolina Wilmington, Delaware, Eastern Carolina

Reasons for choosing SMU:  “I found a perfect balance between academics and athletics. I felt really comfortable meeting the coach and the team, and I wanted a new atmosphere. I feel Dallas will give me that. I’m excited.”

What was the progression that led you to swimming at the collegiate level?  “I have been swimming competitively since I was six, and I have had the dream of swimming D-1 since early in my career. It’s amazing how fast it creeps up on you.

“(The college recruiting process) was a little stressful at times. Narrowing down the schools – it’s hard to find the right fit, but in the end, I feel like I made the right decision for me.”

CR North coach Ted Schueller says:  The first thing I always think of with Madison is she’s the consummate team person. She’s always very supportive of her teammates. Yesterday she gave up one of her races because one of her teammates was close to her district time. She didn’t even hesitate. She’s just very supportive of each kid individually and is everything you want and ask out of a captain. I can’t ask for any more out of our captains, Madison and Julia Demarest – the captains are like an extension of the coaching staff. They’re like the right hand person. They deal with issues we might not be aware of.

“She’s a competitor – she hates to lose. She just has that drive and that killer instinct in the pool, and she just seems to rise to the occasion when she needs to, whether it’s for herself or for the team.”

Spirit head coach Jonathan Faikish says: “(What sets Madison apart) is her hard work and dedication. She has been the longest swimmer I have ever coached - this is our fifth year together.  She’s stepping up her training to make sure she’s hitting the goals she wants to hit. Last year we missed the goal we wanted by .27, so her goal this year is to swim the 500 in under five minutes. She’s splitting her time between Spirit and school, making sure when she’s there she’s training hard. I definitely think SMU is the right school for her – just the school, the swimming program and the coaching staff. I think the warm weather will definitely help her out.”
