CR SOUTH ADVANCES TO DISTRICT DUAL FINALS, PENNRIDGE STILL IN HUNT FOR STATE BERTH

By Glenn Kaiser

Council Rock South easily advanced into the semifinals at Upper Dublin High School on Friday evening in the District One Dual Team Championship Quarterfinals with its win over hometown rival CR North 60-9.  CRS, the #2 seed from the SOL National Conference, faced off against #3 Spring-Ford in the semifinal bout in the bottom half of the dual bracket in their second bout of the evening, with the winner advancing to the State Dual Championships.  Spring-Ford, a dangerous team from the PAC 10 was prepared for the match-up with South, but in the end, CRS was the better of these two rivals from the top two leagues in District One.

In the final match of the dual at 170 pounds, the Golden Hawks Joe Doyle only needed to prevent his Spring-Ford opponent, Steve Rice, from garnering bonus points to secure the match as CRS held a 27-23 advantage in the team score after Spring-Ford’s Frankie Krauss pulled out a 3-2 win over South’s Dylan Schwartz.  Trailing in a closely contested bout in the second period, Doyle caught Rice on his back for a pin and six points for South to nail down a 33-23 victory for the Golden Hawks.

Rock South will face PAC 10 power Boyertown in the finals Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm at Upper Dublin High School.  CR South secured its spot in the State Duals with the win, as the top four teams from District One advance.

Perhaps the swing bout in this nip and tuck battle was at 152 pounds where Lucas Martoccio (CRS) was able to hang on for a 3-1 decision over S-F standout Jon Cooper, giving the Golden Hawks a 27-20 cushion with two bouts left.

The match started at 182, and it was CRS striking first with Ben Kenis defeating the Rams Ryan Yanulevich 1-0.  After a CRS forfeit at 285, Spring-Ford jumped out to a 10-6 lead that was quickly neutralized by Riley Palmer’s solid major decision victory (13-4) over Brandon Meredith to knot the score at 10-10.

After a perfect 16-0 tech fall from South’s Ben Radnor at 113, the Golden Hawks never looked back as Zack Trampe added to the lead with a fall at 126 to extend South’s lead to 21-14.  In another top bout in the dual, CRS triumphed yet again as Joe Little beat the Rams Matt Krieble 4-2 at 138 to dash some hopes of a late turnaround by the Rams.

South will be tested in the finals against an extremely talented Boyertown team that has added the nation’s best 220 pounder in Jordan Wood back into the line-up with his return from shoulder surgery.

Boyertown defeated Pennridge in the top half semifinal dual 34-22.  Pennridge gave the Bears their best challenge of the season with Wood in the line-up, as Boyertown has been strong throughout the year, remaining undefeated at 17-0 overall.

Pennridge was victorious in by far the most competitive bout of the quarterfinals over Owen J Roberts, 41-22.  The Rams captured six of the first seven bouts to jump out to a 31-3 lead, which proved to be insurmountable for Owen J.  Bonus points were the difference in this one as the Rams racked up 24 points from their top two and bottom two wrestlers on pins from Ezra Outlaw (220), Joe Kracz (285), and Matt Parker (106) while Kordell Rush (113) received a forfeit.

Zack Tuerke started things off at 170 with a big win over the Wildcats Nick Duliakas, riding out Duliakis in the third period after scoring the match’s only point off an escape in the second period.  Both wrestlers could not get an edge on their feet as both fought off several takedown attempts, with Tuerke the aggressor throughout.  Tuerke just missed a two-count with a tilt in the third, but was able to hang on after riding out Duliakis for two minutes in the final session.  Kyle Gentile followed with a 20-8 major over Connor Mitchell to begin the run.

In a feat perhaps a never seen before, the night featured back-to-back 100 win club matches. Kyle Gentile of Pennridge garnered the 100th win of his career in just his junior year over Boyertown’s Will Scholl 14-2 at 182 to start off the semifinal bout with the Bears.  And not to be outdone, the Bears’ Gregg Harvey followed up with his 100th career win with a major decision of his own (12-1) over the Rams’ Ezra Outlaw.

Gentile and Harvey have a special relationship and have competed against each other throughout their high school wrestling days.

Speaking with Kyle Gentile after the dual meet, he stated that he “was disappointed he didn’t get to wrestle (Gregg)” as they both weighed in at 170 pounds.  Nonetheless, Kyle said it “felt great to get the 100th win.”

Obviously, Kyle is poised to be up on the podium in Hershey, and he replied to that, “170 is my weight class, and the plan is to win it.” He is comfortable with the weight after dropping down from 182 and is strong there and confident in his abilities.

Unfortunately, the Rams could not overcome a forfeit at 126 pounds, nor upset wins from the Bears that definitely dictated the outcome of the semifinal dual meet.

The Rams Joe Kracz (285) was caught in the first period with a headlock by Tommy Killoran for a five-point move he could not overcome.  Kracz had defeated Killoran four times this season heading into their fifth battle.  Kracz rebounded after the big move of Killoran in the first and pressed the action throughout the match, looking for his own headlock, but he came up short on a 7-4 decision.

The other upset of sorts came at 113 after Kordell Rush had to default after running out of injury time on his second injury time.  In what was certainly a highly anticipated bout between two standouts in Rush and Boyertown’s David Campbell, the match took a twist when it appeared Rush was clearly bumped in the head and signaled for injury time as Campbell executed a takedown.  Campbell was awarded the takedown, and Rush never seemed to recover from the injury as he used both injury time and blood time in the bout.  In the end, it was potentially a nine=point swing in the dual meet as Boyertown took the lead 16-10.

It still looked as if the Rams could pull off the victory when they got two upset wins of their own out of freshmen Micah Visuwan’s 2-0 SV win over the Bears’ Garrett Mauger, and Josh Stillings’ 2-1 decision over Boyertown’s Lucas Miller with a takedown at the buzzer that prevented Miller from garnering his 100th career win.  But three straight victories by Boyertown after that put the boom on any hopes of a comeback for Pennridge even though Zack Tuerke closed out the evening with another good win, a 7-5 SV overtime win.

Pennridge will take on Downingtown East at 1:00pm in a consolation semifinal bout, and the winner will advance to the State Duals.  CR North was eliminated with its 45-21 consolation loss to Downingtown East.  In the AA bracket, Springfield will battle 3-time District One AA Team Champion Lower Moreland in one semifinal at 1:00pm.  Only the AA champion will advance to Hershey for the PIAA Team Championships.  The AA Finals are at 3:00pm as well.
