CR South Advances to State Semis With Win over Erie Cathedral Prep

CR South Advances To Semis, Nazareth Up Next

Council Rock South was solid up and down its lineup in the Golden Hawks’ quarterfinal bout with Erie Cathedral Prep, winning 31-25.  Maximino Mendez (106) and Joe Doyle (220) recorded falls to grab momentum after the Golden Hawks dropped the opening match at 170-pounds.  Tyler Gettmann got that right back at 182 with a 4-2 win over Prep’s Evan Selker with a late takedown and a nice switch for a reversal early in the match.  With each team earning back and forth victories and falls through the heavyweight bout, including Doyle’s :49 second fall after a slick HiC takedown and an overpowering leg rid, Maximino Mendez followed with a tight cradle and pin fall to put South in the driver’s seat.

Ben Radner looked solid at 120 with a tight reinforced bar tilt, winning 6-1 after stepping over a toss attempt by Andrew Stark at the buzzer to take on more backs.  Eric Woloshyn was outstanding at 126 for South, winning 9-4 over Prep’s Tyler McKinney with a nifty chin whip at the buzzer.  He got rolled out of the hold, but it was more than enough for the win.  Mike McKinney stepped in at 132-pounds to earn a hard fought 3-2 decision win over Spencer Staab.  McKinney fought off a desperate headlock attempt at the end of the match and held onto a single leg to keep the victory.

At 138-pounds, the Golden Hawks’ Zack Trampe found himself in a very physical match with Marques McClorin, but in what has been his trademark lately, he owned the third period with a series of takedowns with a major decision (19-11).  And from there, it was all done for Prep as Cary Palmer grabbed a 4-3 decision at 145-pounds over Albert Taylor to put South ahead in the team score 31-16 with two bouts to go and clinching the W.

CR South’s Riley Palmer was agitated with a banged-up knee at 152 from what it appeared and dropped a 3-1 decision to Carter Starocci, and Cole Flanigan got decked by the Ramblers Dazjon Casto to close out the scoring 31-25 with the Golden Hawks on top.

Nazareth was a 46-18 winner over Cedar Cliff and will battle the Rock South at 8 pm tonight.
