COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH DROPPED BY BIG MACS

HERSHEY, PA-Council Rock South could not repeat the start that they had last year at the state duals against Cannon McMillan.  In the first round of these 2018 PIAA (AAA) Team Championships Thursday evening South dropped a 24-36 dual to the Big Macs.  Last year South topped the Big Macs 30-29 with big Joe Doyle leading the way up top, closing that match out with a fall.  However, this season without Doyle, now at Binghamton University, manning the upper weights, the Golden Hawks could not mount a comeback this time at the Giant Center.

South was forced to juggle their line-up down low, and the bump up in the upper middle weights was not favorable in this one.  Last week the moves worked well as the Golden Hawks captured the District One Team Championship over Spring-Ford.  The loss drops CRS down to the consolation bracket where they will meet up with District 4’s team champs Shikellamy tomorrow at 10:00am.

Ben Radner sparked the Golden Hawks with a quick 13-second fall at 132-pounds with a headlock over CM’s Remington Ross to knot the team score at 12 all after six contested bouts.

However, the Big Macs countered with a shocking fall by Tim Hrtisko at 138-pounds over CRS’s Eric Woloshyn in 1:37 of the first period.  Despite Hrtisko being ranked #7 at 138-pounds by PA Power Rankings, the Golden Hawks didn’t expect a fall here.  South’s L.J. Kahn then gutted it out at 145-pounds after being slammed by Tanner Rohaley (CM) but lost a close 5-4 decision.  The illegal slam could have evened the match again if Kahn was unable to continue.

At 152, Cole Flanagan put huge points on the board for the Golden Hawks as he decked Saul Martinez (CM) in style with a quick toss in a mere 37-seconds.  The fall brought CRS within three points of the Big Macs moving up to 160-pounds, but a decision and quick fall by the Macs extended their lead to 30-18.  Nik Korbich up at 182-pounds for CRS hung on to win a 10-7 match over Evan Miller (CM) keeping the Golden Hawks alive in the dual 21-30, needing a fall and a decision to just tie up the match.

Giani Gilch wrestled well again for South, winning a 2-1 decision to Alec Handel (CM) and pulling ever closer to the Big Macs 30-24.  But Cannon McMillan closed it out 220-pounds with a quick fall making the final score 36-24.  The Golden Hawks had their final season SOL National match cancelled last night with Abington due to school being closed with the icy weather.
